"Jaunty, lively, and filled with references to contemporary cultural history, making this work a well-researched page-turner. Readers will get an intense dose of history, written in a not-hard-to-swallow style."―Library Journal"Wright brings a reliably sane and bitingly funny voice to a topic we never realized we wanted to know so much about: historically devastating plagues! Read this. . . .so that you can soon amuse your friends with the best dinner party conversation ever." ―NYLON, '50 Books We Can't Wait to Read in 2017'"Wright doesn't simply state gross-out facts or hold up solitary individuals as heroes. Instead, she highlights the issues that impacted our understanding of and response to medical nightmares. Leadership, religiosity, power structures, and science collide...Written with Wright's signature humorous tone, this is a grim but engaging look at some of humanity's most feared foes." ―Bust"Jennifer has a rare ability to make history funny, titillating, and relevant, in way I’ve not come across before. Her passion and enthusiasm jumps off the page and makes her most recent book Get Well Soon: History’s Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them, a most compelling and important read." ―Angela Ledgerwood, Lit UpAdditional Praise for Jennifer Wright and It Ended Badly"Wright combines a deep knowledge of her subjects with an abiding love for their depravity; she chronicles their breakups with a wit as sharp as a guillotine's blade."―People"The tone―intimate, whimsical, smart, and silly at once―continues through two millennia of stories of love lost and found... Wright dishes dirt on all of them...with the gleeful irreverence of your wittiest friend recapping a particularly juicy episode of reality television."―The Boston Globe"Immensely entertaining... If you’ve gone through a breakup, stock up on Haagen-Daz, block your ex’s number, get drunk with your friends and buy this book."―BUST Magazine"This is balm for the brokenhearted: we are laughing! We are learning!...Above all, It Ended Badly offers hope: for the late-night drunk texters, the doughnut smashers, and everyone else currently exhibiting bad breakup behavior."―Kirkus"Although the 13 stories feature heartbreaking and horrific tales, Wright leaves the reader with positive and hopeful thoughts on love... The writing fits right in with the work of comedian authors Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler."―Library Journal (starred review)“Delightful... funny, irreverent... The book teaches even as it entertains, and applies modern psychology to the behavior of its subjects, providing both amusements and consolation to people likely in need of both.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

I received this work through the Early Reviewer program and requested it on the basis of what I felt was a potentially fascinating subject. I was very disappointed with the book, both with respect to its content, but more importantly, the writing style of the author. The tone of the author in this work is unbelievably informal and “snarky”. Given that the subject matter of the work is quite serious, it is jarringly inappropriate. The writing style employed by the author would be appropriate in a comedian’s autobiography or a celebrity tell-all, not a review of the worst plagues in world history. Putting aside the tone and style, the writing is simply not very good in any case, somewhat of a surprise, given the author’s background. Bottom line, it was terribly annoying and made it impossible for me to appreciate the subject matter. In addition, the book contains so many misspellings, punctuation and grammar errors that whoever edited the book should be fired. While this was a “reader’s copy”, and many of the errors may be corrected before final publication, numerous proofs and drafts are approved prior to bound publication. If I were associated with this work, I would be highly embarrassed. The photographs included in the book were of VERY poor quality and were uniformly accompanied by what I can only assume the author thought to be witty and pithy comments. She was wrong. I could find very little of value in this work.

In college, I majored in environmental science with a really large amount of public health thrown in on the side. I studied numerous diseases, from plague, to malaria to Legionnaire's disease. There were a god number of "plagues" in this book that I had never heard of, let alone studied. The author goes back to ancient Roman times and moves her way to the (almost) present day. I was disappointed that there were some disease not covered, but in the epilogue she indicated that she wanted to cover diseases that had been "conquered" so she left a lot of things out…like malaria, yellow fever, etc. She did, however, cover an interesting assortment of diseases which are either still in the back ground to this day (plague) or have been all but eradicated from the face of the earth. The author writes with a witty style, which at first turned me off, but as I thought about it, most people wouldn't have been able to handle all of the death and disease presented without an occasional laugh. And she is humorous at just the right times. The message from the book is that if we study how we screwed up in the past, maybe we will handle disease differently in the future, and believe me, there are diseases lurking around the corner that you have never dreamed of, let alone heard about. Zika maybe bad, but is nothing next to some of the other diseases lurking in the shadows.I recommend the book as a wonderful look at diseases from the past in a short ( and not too boring) way. It is informative and humorous…overall an excellent read!

LOVE. I shouldn't have laughed so much reading a book about plagues! Ms Wright's style won't be for everyone, but it's a great read for anyone who wants to learn about how ridiculous and heroic people can be. Her style is colloquial and approachable. We need more author's that cascasn bring levity to nonfiction. I see her books as a great starting point to explore a topic and then find further information on the events or subjects that interest you.

I had no idea the Spanish influenza started here in America! I learned a lot from the book, but I also love the way Jennifer Wright writes! The book has moments that can pull at your heartstrings (the polio chapter) and at other times make you so angry with your fellow humans (Woodrow Wilson really was the worst!).I highly recommend this book to anyone! Get it for the historian or hypochondriac in your life... hell, honestly its the perfect Christmas present for anyone you know who likes to read!

This starts out strong with its description of the Antoine plague and its societal effects. This is where the book is strongest: describing a disease on an individual level in colorful prose, then describing the disease on a societal level. Where the book gets weaker is in the later chapters, where the author focuses more on particular individuals. So for Typhoid, we learn a lot about Typhoid Mary, but not a lot about what Typhoid does to a person or how widespread or devastating it really was.

This was an interesting book about the worst plagues in history, but it was presented with humor as well as historical fact. This was not an all-inclusive review of diseases that have plagued humans, but it covered the most well-known. Beginning in Roman times to the current day, the author covered the interesting diseases and how the deaths of the population were dealt with. It is interesting to note the treatments of the times as well. The author seems to be an aficionado of Game of Thrones, which she injected into the writing. It was also like listening to John Oliver's discussion of events and comparing them to common occurrences. Highly recommended!

This was an interesting book. It was funny and conversational. It was more of what I would expect from a blog than a book. I don't really have any problems with that, it just isn't what I normally go for. I did learn some new things, and I did laugh a bit though. This book is for light reading. It isn't for people who are into dry history books with no commentary.

I love this book. I work in the medical field, and have a hankering for history, so plagues throughout time definitely hits the spot for me. Jennifer Wright is both highly intelligent and sarcastic, providing factual references mixed with witty remarks. I highly recommend this book, I can't wait to read her others!

The author is skilled in providing just enough medical detail about the disease but also stories that highlight real cases. This did not disappoint.

Perfect starter chapter book for my 2nd grade grandson who is obsessed with sports!

My nine year old son is very into football! My husband used to read these Matt Christopher books when he was young, and wanted to try them out with our youngest sports fan. Well written, just right to grab the I attention of a young boy.

My students' introduction to Matt Christopher books. They have been well received.

Matt Christopher has written several interesting books geared to the male audience. I bought this because I had two or three boys who had no interest in reading. This did the trick, a book about boys and sports. Great literature? Not so much. Inspiring to ten year olds? Absolutely!
