Review

“[An] unsettling look at the prospects for human survival. . . . Readers open to inconvenient and sobering truths will find much to digest in McKibben’s eloquently unsparing treatise.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“A compelling call for change.” ―Kirkus Reviews“[A] deeply caring, eloquently reasoned inquiry into environmental and techno-utopian threats. . . . Profoundly compelling and enlightening, McKibben balances alarm with hope.” ―Booklist (starred review)“A love letter, a plea, a eulogy, and a prayer. This is Bill McKibben at his glorious best. Wise and warning, with everything on the line. Do not miss it.”―Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine“I braced myself to plunge into this book about the largest and grimmest of situations our species has faced, and then I found myself racing through it, excited by the grand synthesis of innumerable scientific reports on the details of the crisis. And then at the end I saw the book as a description of a big trap with a small exit we could take, if we take heed of what Bill McKibben tells us here, and act on it.”―Rebecca Solnit, author of A Paradise Built in Hell and Hope in the Dark“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Bill McKibben has written a book so important, reading it might save your life, not to mention your home: Planet Earth. Falter is a brilliant, impassioned call to arms to save our climate from those profiting from its destruction before it’s too late. Over and over, McKibben has proven one of the most farsighted and gifted voices of our times, and with Falter he has topped himself, producing a book that honestly, everyone should read.”―Jane Mayer, bestselling author of Dark Money“No one has done more than Bill McKibben to raise awareness about the great issues of our time. Falter is an essential book―honest, far-reaching and, against the odds, hopeful.”―Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction

“Canada’s pre-eminent historian. . . .  A captivating read, balancing intense research with richly drawn characters and lively storytelling.” (Maclean’s)“Engaging. . . . Gray’s cast involves meticulously researched historical figures, whose behaviour she depicts with psychological insight. Narrated with a great sense of presence, irony, and verve, this book recreates a vanished world of Canadian jurisprudence and politics, invests it with life, and makes it memorable.” (The Globe and Mail)“An engrossing chronicle of Toronto’s social life at the beginning of the 20th century.” (Toronto Star)“Gripping and insightful . . . . Gray has managed to resurrect a devilishly intriguing character.” (Quill & Quire)In The Massey Murder, Gray shows real kindness and compassion, bringing a sense of humanity to a once-lurid tale from the tabloids.” (Winnipeg Free Press)

The Massey family is well-known (or should be) by older Canadian residents and even today the Massey name is part of the agricultural scene. To read this true account of one member of this illustrious family takes us back to a time when the mores, beliefs and customs of an era inform and entertain. There is a murder - a male victim and murderess. The victim is shown to be an ordinary man caught in circumstances beyond his control and the media, newspapers mainly, debate the possibility that he deserved what he got at the hands of a poor innocent girl who was most certainly defenseless. Women, especially young single women, had to be blameless when up against male authority, especially if there is a question of morality such as it was in this case.

Gray creates an entertaining narrative based on extensive research. The result is a fascinating book about a crime that shook the social world of Toronto in 1915. The growing divide between the affluent upper class in the enclaves of the colonial establishment versus the working class struggling on the outskirts is portrayed with vigour. Gray introduces the energetic newspaper wars that served to heighten the lurid details of the victim and perpetrator along with the drama of Canada's participation in WWI; we meet the cast of influential figures clinging to the values of Victorian moralists as well as the leaders of emerging movements for social reform. It is a compelling read, especially for anyone interested in Toronto's history in particular.

I was quite disappointed in the book. I found it difficult to meld the two themes; that of the war and that of the murder. I felt it was a stretch for the author to relate these two events. I would have liked the murder plot to be more detailed. The war portion of the book seemed much larger than the story that the title of the book refers to. A disappointment for me. D. Leclerc.

This book was edifying on many levels as well as including an intriguing true story. The social, cultural, legal, manufacturing, political and military histories of Canada in the early 20th century are dealt with in a masterful way while paralleling the story of a little-known murder case. I leave this book knowing more about many aspects of my country's history. As holder of a Governor General's medal from 1956 with Vincent Massey's profile on it, I feel that knowing more about his family enriches that experience.

This book is a true history of Toronto during the first war. Each event plays off the other. The class differences, the prejudice, the birth of the women's movements, the struggles between the press and drama of a gifted lawyer. A good read. The only disappointment was a little more spark would have made it perfect.

Although the judicial process was flawed, I couldn't help but cheer for the maid. I liked the way the author presented the mindset of the period and also the news stories of the day that were presented at the beginning of each chapter, especially the progress of WWI.

I chose to read this book because it gave insight into one of the most affluent Canadian families. Charlotte Gray weaves a wonderful tale of murder while giving the reader a glimpse into life during World War 1 and the beginnings of the women's movement in Canada. A fabulous story.

A murder mystery that would have made a decent short story + 250 pages of fairly to marginally relevant background about Toronto in 1915. Living in Toronto, I found about 2/3 of that interesting but toward the end it really got in the way of the main narrative about the murder.

Eidolon is the second book in the Wraith King series by Grace Draven. The series is intended to be 6 books. If you haven't read the first book, Radiance, you absolutely must, so that Eidolon makes sense to you. Radiance is a 10 star read (yes, way above Amazon's 5 star rating), so if you haven't read it, you are missing out on one of the all time great books.Eidolon picks up immediately where Radiance left off. The demons have been released by the Shadow Queen, mother to Brishen in an attempt to have more and more dark power. Brashin, who was a distant heir to the throne, suddenly finds himself King of the Kai. At the time of Brishen's marriage to Ildiko, it meant nothing that she was literally another species and could never have his child. All of a sudden, that fact is very important politically and for the future of the realm. What's worse is the demons cannot be killed by sword or axe, but can only be banished by men who wield tremendous magic.First of all, the Prologue to this book is like Grace Draven meets Stephen King. It was bone-chilling, horrifying, heart-wrenching and full of sorrow. That chapter alone showed the brilliance of Draven's imagination and writing. As the book went on so many scenes happened to make the reader shout with a huge woo-hoo or to stop and think over something that had been said. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, and I can't recommend it enough. My reason for four stars is the character of Ildiko. In Radiance, we were shown a humorous, pragmatic beauty who offered unwavering support to her husband, even though he was so different from her. In Eidolon, I found her reactions at times to be disappointing as Ildiko became a Queen first and THEN a wife, when it should have been the other way around. Even though it pained her, everything she did in Eidolon she did to further the Kai throne and the future of the Kai people. That would have been great, except in the meantime she let down Brishen on several occasions. As if he didn't have enough on his plate, Brishen had to work through hurt, disappointment and a feeling of betrayal to get to where Ildiko was emotionally and to realize what her motives were. Happily, after the first half of the book, Ildiko became more the Ildiko of Radiance, and I found myself once again liking her. By the way, the scene with the mayor and the soup was a big chortle for me.Radiance was a strong romance in a fantasy world. Eidolon is a fantasy with a romance included. Despite the shift in the saga, I highly recommend this book, and I look forward to Wraith Kings 3.

Radiance was one of my favorite Romantasies (romance + fantasy) of last year. So I was so excited to continue on in this world especially after that crazy ending.I liked Eidolon well enough but it didn’t quite capture the same feelings I had for the first book. I think that had to do with the emotional turmoil in Brishen and Ildiko’s marriage. In Radiance we went from them being a friendly marriage of convenience to falling in love but in Eidolon we must deal with the drama of being torn apart in the aftermath of the destruction of Royal family.I’ll just say that I totally adored Brishen and his undying allegiance to Ildiko even when she was totally messing up but trying to do the right thing for him and his people….it was angsty. Still we get a few moments that were more fun as Ildiko chases away annoying dignitaries and nobles with her strange human eyes and their ability to move independently. This story focused a little more on the fantasy aspect and to save his people Brishen must die and lead an army of recently dead against their foesThis story was a bit darker and there were a lot of deaths along the way. A few characters I remembered from the first story but most were just fodder. I did enjoy the battle to save the land and a few peoples coming together to help. The magic section of the story was the most interesting to me plot wise.Other than that the big highlight for me was actually the banter and possible romance that could be blooming between Anhuset and Serovek. Their banter was pretty great AND I’m super excited that they will be the main PoVs in the next book*** “Here,” he said. “The weakest spot.” She huffed. “I doubt it, though I don’t think cutting off your head or your prick will help you become a Wraith King.” Were this a less awful scenario, Ildiko might have laughed. His mischievous grin promised a retort to put Anhuset’s back up, and he delivered. “When I return, you’ll share my bed, warrior woman, and be very grateful you didn’t slice off my prick.” ***I look forward to how Serovek plans to woo that warrior woman. I’m pretty sure the normal methods are not going to work at all.Still overall I enjoyed the majority of the story. I figured out the solution to Brishen and Ildikos marital problem early on so while it was painful to watch them struggle I was pretty sure it would all turn out okay for them in the long run.Overall if you are a fan of fantasy heavy on the romance this should be a good fit for you.

This story concludes one begun in Radiance, so get Radiance first. Other reviewers extol the virtues of the novel, so I thought I'd have fun with some Type Theory on the main characters, since they are written so well I can make a fairly decent guess.Ildiko = ENTP or Extraverted Intuitive Thinking Perceiving. A rational, commanding presence who makes reasonable decisions and likes to keep options open, she is slow to judgment and thinks on her feet. These folks make good managers, but can get themselves into trouble by either expressing their opinions too freely, or taking a wrong-headed approach to a problem.Brishen = INFJ, Introverted Intuitive Feeling Judging. A rare Idealist type who combines compassion and caring with the fortitude to make physicalimpact on the world. These idealists are teachers, leaders, and counselors, and are holy terrors when their inborn sense of right and wrong is crossed. Potential to be not just a temporal leader, but his peoples' spiritual leader, as well. One of the best joys of these novels is how compatible these types are. The conflicts are brought from outside their relationship, not any'romance-trope' like pig-headed muscle-man or dimwit heroine. I have no idea if the author intended to match her characters with Type Theory, but they match in a lovely, grown-up way.

I greatly enjoyed reading this book on the metro because it was non-technical and it sounded just like when I help my father solve various electronic/mechanical issues. In fact, it was like he was right there telling me the war stories despite him being 5800KM away.As per pros for the book:* Rang true with me by stating, don't get lost in the details, but actually get in there and LOOK at the problem - not read about it.* Good stories and examples* Good flow and not boring* Good techniques for problem solving* Good price for the contentCons:* Reads a bit like a personal opinion like rant* Needs a bit more editing (small typos)* Slightly repetitive (but I understand that this may have been a literary tactic)Honestly, this was a good read and I would gladly recommend this book for any person attempting to improve their thought process regarding debugging or solving problems. Undergraduate and graduate students + professors should seek to read this book or have it among the required readings for advanced programming classes.

I'm a professional programmer for less than 2 years, however my debugging skill stands sharp amongst my team, owing to this book. I cannot believe how powerful these debugging rules are. For example, one time I have to troubleshoot a very tricky race condition issue. The rule "quite thinking and look" forced me not to make any pre-assumptions, and rather look into the loggings and the data in the database. Along with "divide and conquer", I was able to narrow down the amount of data to look into and find it is a race condition issue by looking at the update date fields.Interestingly enough, I think some programmers do make pre-assumptions when troubleshooting. This set of debugging rules advice against the pre-assumptions and stick with scientific methodologies.

This book is absolutely indispensable for anyone working in any job where things occasionally work in an unexpected manner. It's concise, funny, well-written, and full of immensely useful tips on how to go about debugging problems. One of the great things about this book is that it's generalistic in nature, not specific. Agans's decades of troubleshooting experience has given him great insight on how to go about debugging in all sorts of environments, so he lays out nine rules for approaching any problem:Understand the SystemMake it FailQuit Thinking and LookDivide and ConquerChange One Thing at a TimeKeep an Audit TrailCheck the PlugGet a Fresh ViewIf You Didn't Fix It, It Ain't Fixed[...]Debugging isn't an art performed only by folks with some odd genetic disposition, it's a critical craft which can and must be learned. I was fortunate to have some good troubleshooters as mentors during my days working radar inflight in the Air Force, but I've fallen out of many of the good practices those folks beat^H^H^H^Hinstilled in me. Agans's book is helping me pull out of the thrash and churn mode of debugging. This book's only 175 or so pages long and is well-worth adding to your library. Actually, substitute "a critical addition" for "well worth adding". I'm also going to make sure this book gets added to the professional development reading list I'm working on creating.

I just finished reading David Agans' wonderful book, "Debugging". I've worked in the software development field for many years and I wish I had this book when I started out. I really like his approach to debugging because it is practical and methodical. In a nutshell, David suggests that you should trust no one, "stop thinking and look". Basically, rely on how you think the module / code should work. You need to look and verify the actions / results.Even if you are not a software developer or an engineer, this book is still valuable. Members of the QA team and help desk can also benefit from this book. It will help you in your troubleshooting efforts and also allow you to file bug reports that contain good data. This book is only 175 pages, it is an easy read ... but it is filled with practical advice. Great job David!

If you have 10-20 years of experience I guess you know most of the rules outlined in this book already. It won't give you any code examples though. More like sharpening your mindset when it comes to problem solving. But hey, I don't regret that I read it, and I suppose you won't regret it either.

Perhaps because I am an experienced debugger I found this book to be much thicker than was justified by the content. Essentially the author lists what he considers essential rules for good debugging (no argument with the list, although other lists also work as well) and devotes a chapter to giving examples of each rule in use. The writing style is fine, with some humor that mostly seems to work--it's an easy, quick read. My complaint is simply that the discussion of each rule provided far too many words and too little new knowledge for my taste. That said, the author's guideline list is useful for those few of us that can learn such a skill as debugging from a book. In my opinion, experience helps a good deal more than reading. Nevertheless, for someone just becoming acquainted with the kind of problem solving discussed in the book the book may be useful...if referred to frequently enough for the rules to become habitual.

Great book on debugging. I killed three flies with it at one time.
