Patrick N. McDermott, PhD, is the director of physics education at Beaumont Health and an adjunct associate professor at Oakland University. He was previously an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Wayne State University and a physicist at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. He is a fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and a recipient of numerous teaching awards. He earned a PhD in physics and astronomy from the University of Rochester and an MS in radiological physics from Wayne State University. Very interesting and recommendable bookThis book is may be the most interesting book published on this field in last years. It covers many important aspects of the radiotherapy physics that is simply impossible to find in other books of this field, all of them discussed in up to day perspective.It is and absolutely recommended book for any one working on this things. It is not an introductory book, and at the book assumes that the reader know some concepts, so for a beginner probably it is not the first book that should be study but it is the second or third (probably after 1. Radiation Physics for Medical Physicists by Ervin B. Podgorsak and 2. The Physics of Radiotherapy X-Rays And Electrons by Peter Metcalfe and Tomas Kron)The book gives some problems at the end of each chapter solved at the end of the book; many of them direct applications of the theory. In my personal opinion the book could be improved with more and more difficult solved problems may be in a complement book.In any case the book covers an urgent need in this field.

I have read a great deal of legal history in my time; often it is dry as dust, overly detailed, and presented in endlessly long chapters that exhaust the reader with legal detail. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I began reading this new SHORT history of European Law by Tamar Herzog of Harvard (with some American as well thrown in). In 278 pages, the author takes the reader from Roman Law to Euro law, including helpful end notes and a very fine bibliography organized chapter by chapter. There is no fat here, and the narrative moves along smoothly through the short segment format the author employs.Nearly every chapter is crisp and incisive and delivers a great deal of concise information. The mystery of the book for me is that I took 15 pages of notes, reflecting a lot of information, yet this is such a relatively brief volume. Part I on ancient law turns particularly interesting when, following a fine intro to Roman law, the author turns to discussing the joining of Roman law and Christianity to form Latin Christendom. Then in Part Two, we are into the early Middle Ages touching upon Canon law, Germanic law, the development of the feudal system , and emperors seeking to gain the support of the Church as they exerted their own legal authority.Part Three deals with the later Middle Ages and introduces one of the author's central themes--the ius commune that arises out of the rediscovery of ancient Roman texts and the rise of new university centers for the study of law (such as Bologna). The trained scholars assume a major role in this legal rebirth, impacting on Canon Law, and feudal law, as a common legal culture--the ius commune--with its own scope, methods, intentions and solutions begins to gain a foothold. Also in this Part, the author delivers a most interesting chapter on the birth of the English common law. The writs system, the centrality of procedure, the conflict with royal legislation, and the introduction of equity are all covered--again economically. Part Four deals with the development of French law, the Reformation, and the importance of custom. A second chapter on the Common Law adds further insights as to how it emerged dominant vis-a-vis royal authority through the use of the Ancient Constitution argument employed by Edward Coke and others.Part Five deals with modernity, including North American developments, and the French revolution. A particularly valuable discussion occurs in Part Six, where the author tackles codification and its challenge to Common Law systems. Finally, the author finishes up with an effective discussion of European Community law and how it interacts with domestic legal systems.Compact yet complete, lean yet detailed where necessary, the book reflects the author's firm grasp on her expansive topic, while demonstrating once again how skillful organization and masterly writing can contribute so much to making a book outstanding. An essential book for anyone interested in European and American law.

Rob McKenzie has rendered a very fine service to the church in writing this work of comparative theology. He writes with the experience of a student who has spent many years in both camps and the charity of a mature Christian who desires that the dialogue between dispensationalists and covenant theologians would be mutually edifying, free from misrepresentation, and above all driven back to a search of the Scriptures.Indeed, greatest strength of this book is that it serves as an introduction to how to study the Bible, letting Scripture interpret Scripture. And herein is the crux of the difference between dispensationalists and Reformed Christians: hermeneutics. While some Christians will surely disagree with Rob’s covenantal convictions, they will be thankful for this grand tour through the history of salvation revealed in God’s Word.

I really think there are better works than this for comparing the two systems. Plus, Wellum's Progressive Covenantalism isn't even mentioned? How could the book/view on this topic not even be addressed? This debate is hard to simplify, and I think it best not to read comparisons but the actual people's works and see how they handle passages. I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I don't really recommend it. If you want to understand a dispensationalist, then read his work or commentaries. Also, Ben Merkle will be releasing a book entitled "Understanding Theological Systems" next year that will cover the 6 major systems. 3 for Dispensationalism and 3 for Covenantalism. I happen to have an early copy and recommend it form Merkle who holds a PhD from Southern Baptist Seminary. It is also simpler to read.

I heard about this book while listening to a podcast and immediately knew it would be a beneficial read. Robert takes time to carefully examine the more popular points of tension between Dispensational and Covenant theology.I am currently using this as a guide to expand my current understanding of both theological systems. I often find myself reading a few pages then doing independent study to further understand the point being discussed.This would be a great book for a small group to go through or even in a Sunday school setting.

I appreciated the author's careful handling of the differences between the Covenant and Dispensational camps. I have dear Brothers, whom I admire, who hold varied positions. All of us seek to understand one another and appeal to scripture to support our viewpoints. There are times when it is easy to talk over one another and fail to understand one another's arguments.This book has been helpful in providing insight to viewpoints held by some of my Brothers and gives me a better understanding of their foundational positions. I also find that it will enable me to be more concise as I attempt to articulate my own position.Whether you are Covenantal or Dispensational, I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent resource for conversation, understanding, and to help Brothers understand one another.

A very detailed and insightful comparison of the two theological systems. As someone coming out of dispensationalism into Covenant Theology, this book had me writing all kinds of notes and questions in the margins of my copy! This is a tough subject to discuss in an apples to apples format, so Mr McKenzie's approach is very helpful.

I paid for this book. I was hoping to be engaged in a thought provoking read. I too wanted to like this book. I didn’t. Right from the start, I’m presented with straw-men arguments. Most of the dispensational authors have been long dead and gone so we’re not going to get any corrective responses there. I’m more saddened by this than encouraged.

One of the most profound scientific books I have ever read...profound in its ambition to integrate results from so many (supposedly) distinct fields and weave them into a sort of grand unification theory of organizational dynamics.It is not laid out with the formality of a scientific paper or the rigor of a mathematical proof (and it doesn't claim to be), but the arguments are very coherent and compelling, based on equal parts "hard" empirical results and computer simulation. It is above all clear that this is a culmination of Kauffman's 30+ years of work and that of his many colleagues.One word of caution: If you're not comfortable with basic physics, thermodynamics, and some non-trivial mathematical concepts, many of Kauffman's metaphors might be lost on you. It also helps to have read his earlier works and those of authors in related lines of research (John Holland, Ilya Prigogine). He tries very hard to make this accessible to readers with basic scientific literacy, but this is NOT layman's reading.

According to the introduction, the author started writing his ideas about complexity in a notebook in order to understand the interrelationships in a better way; he also mentioned that he did not know if his "investigations" would be useful or absurd, but he thinks he has arrived at a "new theory". The book is virtually full of ideas written for the author himself; the concepts are mercilessly "thrown" at you without previous explanations, so be sure you have previous basic knowledge on the topics. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is among the 10 top-worst written books that I have read (in terms of writing style, not in terms of content), but the ideas are truly novel and amazing; I will surely return to them in the future.Throughout the book Mr. Kauffman tries to establish the foundations of what he calls a "general biology", meaning the laws that would govern life and evolving biospheres everywhere in our universe or maybe even in any universe. In science as we know it, we assume we can determine the space of configurations beforehand, whereas the author claims that in complex systems like biospheres this is impossible due to its non-ergodic (non repeatable) nature.The investigations try to answer fundamental questions like the "origin of life". Life most probably did not occur as a spontaneous "replication of molds", like the auto-copying mechanism of DNA, which only appeared later. Instead, he proposes that life emerged out of a collective autocatalytic system in which molecule A catalyzes the production of molecule B out of B's fragments and B catalyzes the production of A out of its fragments. Now imagine this autocatalytic system but conformed of hundreds of proteins and peptides; the ever increasing molecular complexity achieved by way of recombinations of the existing molecules gives way to life as an "emergent collective behavior of complex chemical networks". Microcosmos: Four Billion Years of Microbial Evolution explains some of the bio-chemical concepts in an easier way.The question "what is life?" is approached by introducing autonomous agents, which are defined as "autocatalytic systems able to reproduce themselves and to perform one or more cycles of thermodynamic work", he also defines them as "a physical system able to act selfishly". Here you will find the explanation of Carnot's work cycle in which a full work cycle can be completed automatically by a simple machine by way of a controlled release of energy. Then the system returns to the initial state in order be able to start another cycle. Autonomous agents complete work cycles for their own benefit in different ways, but mainly by way of chemical reactions (e.g. metabolical reactions) that release energy to perform recurrent work cycles. For other equally astonishing definitions of life read Tree of Knowledge and Life Itself: Exploring the Realm of the Living Cell.Mr. Kauffman explains "Maxwell's demon" to measure a system's small deviations from equilibrium (equivalent to obtaining information from the system to take advantage of this deviations and obtain energy to produce work), thereby relating "information" to "entropy reduction". In later chapters the author proposes a new thermodynamic law, which could also account for "the arrow of time" (for a good explanation of the arrow of time read Deep Simplicity: Bringing Order to Chaos and Complexity). This "new law" states that instead of tending to equilibrium and arriving at a state of maximal entropy, our biosphere and probably the entire universe tend to the adjacent possible as quickly as they can, breaking more symmetries each time and remaining in a non-equilibrium state from which energy can be obtained by coupled systems and autonomous agents to perform work in an endless loop of complex reactions and cycles. For better explanations of statistical physics, power laws and thermodynamic concepts read also Critical Mass: How One Thing Leads to Another and Origin of Wealth: Evolution, Complexity, and the Radical Remaking of Economics. This latter explains many of Mr. Kauffman's ideas - including evolution and co-evolution, adaptive surfaces, etc.- but in a clear, concise and well written manner. Chaos: Making a New Science is also a great introduction to the topic.In some chapters the ideas seemed not fully formed and in my opinion are very close to speculation, specially the chapter where he tries to link Mr. Smolin's quantum gravity theories (alternative to the "superstring theory") with his idea of a fourth law of thermodynamics; not to mention a brief but completely unreadable appendix on consciousness (Spanish edition by Tusquets-Metatemas). I usually love when scientists get out of their area of knowledge and link concepts of other fields to their own expertise to form new hypothesis; but this time I think it went way too far.

Kaufman is not a "science writer", he is one of the worlds senior and most distinguished scientists and he has in this book opened his personal notebook of his most cutting-edge arguments and speculation. Fortunately, he also happens to be an excellent writer. As other reviewers have noted, parts of this book may be difficult to read without prior knowledge of the varied subject areas, but for those of us fascinated by how the universe works this book provides a new high-water mark of explanation. Kaufman pulls together his own and others' ideas in fields including molecular biology, ecology, complexity theory, physics and economics to bring into high relief a significant fact: all around us we see evolving and ever-increasing organizational complexity yet our physical and social sciences have not incorporated that fact into their mainstream theories. Physics has the laws of thermodynamics to specify how the universe becomes more disordered, but no laws to specify the obvious tendency of the universe to become more organized in the presence of an energy gradient. Economics has detailed theories to explain utility maximization and supply and demand balancing given a static set of goods and services, but no mainstream theory to explain the constant increase in economic diversity. Complexity theory provides mathematical tools and simulations that emulate physical complexity but it has not been effectively integrated into mainstream science. Numerous other writers have presented the idea of emergent complexity in biology, such as Capra or Lowenstein, but none that I have read so completely explore, elucidate, extend and defend with experimental evidence the concept as Kaufman does in this book.
