From the Back Cover

Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Very disappointed with this purchase. The version delivered to me is the edited/altered version, not the original version as written by Ray Bradbury in 1950. In this version, all dates have been advanced by 31 years. The chapter called "The Fire Balloons" was not part of the original writing, but from another book entirely. Certain other parts of the book have been updated to comply the modern era, rather than allow the imagination of a future world as seen from the 1950's shine through.I prefer my books, and those I give my children, to remain as the author wrote them originally (translation aside), not updated, abridged, rewritten, or edited for a time long after they were written. The book says Modern Classics at the bottom... Perhaps it should say "altered classics" instead.

I love The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. It's a Five Star book however due to censorship I give it a one star. It has great short stories and make your think about things, especially for the time period it was written. It's a quick and easy read. With that said, my issue with this version is the publishers have censored it taking out one of the chapters due to racism, usage of the "N" word. I'm very much against book censorship and would want them to update it to leave the book to it's original intent or for the readers not get this version. Please look for the book in its intentional form.

Searching for a version that is not censored, I ended up checking the on-line table of contents of this Simon and Schuster edition. It showed "Way In The Middle Of The Air" (which the PC police removed from so many versions of this book) beginning on page 119. Upon getting the book, a quick flip to page 119, aaaand - clearly not a censored edition. Having last read this story 30 years ago, I absolutely inhaled it. Wow - this is a completely different book once you're mature enough to understand what Bradbury wrote about. It's important to get the true version of this book because "Way In The Middle Of The Air" is a truly pivotal story. In the over all arc of stories, the tired and dying Martian society goes extinct more from lassitude and being incurious than anything else. Meanwhile humans arrive and begin creating a more vibrant and hopeful society. However, the book isn't really about that. It's about the world Bradbury was living in with the fear of nuclear annihilation, Jim Crow, and a changing society. It's about progress here on earth and "Mars" as the place were going. This story shows the deep south of the early-mid 1900's as old, tired, and ready to die like the dead Martian societies. The imagery of the river is beautiful. This one story makes it worthwhile to buy this particular edition of the book.I wish this edition were listed separately from the crappy ones.

This book has been extensively altered from the original and classic Martian Chronicles. All of the dates Bradbury used in the chapter headings have been changed, rendering the Cold War/Atomic Age context of the book meaningless. One of the most important chapters "Way in the Middle of the Air", which establishes the violence and hatred endemic in the American culture which invades Mars has been completely removed from the book. An additional, inferior chapter, "The Fire Balloons" which was never part of the original book, has been put in its place. Don't buy this re-hash, find an older version and buy that.UPDATE: January, 2017I have let this warning stand for 4 years, but it is no longer accurate. There are (apart from used books) three versions of The Martian Chronicles on this Amazon page: the Kindle, the hardcover and the trade paperback. I have looked at the table of contents of each. The Kindle version is a censored version with altered dates, Way in the Middle of the Air missing and The Fire Balloons added. Apparently this kindle version is no longer available, I cannot verify that, but I hope it is true. The hardcover version also is a censored version with altered dates, Way in the Middle of the Air missing and The Fire Balloons added. The mass-market paperback, however, I am delighted to say is a better edition, with the original dates restored, and the original chapters that the 1958 version, and all subsequent versions up to 1998, had. Thank you, Simon and Shuster, for responding to reader outrage and restoring what never should have been altered. And thanks to the book-buying and reading public for demanding that a book widely touted by its sellers as "a classic" be, in fact, a classic.By the way, there is nothing wrong with Bradbury's story "The Fire Balloons", it's just not part of The Martian Chronicles, it's part of The Illustrated Man, look for it there.

I purchased the regular paperback edition --- NOT the mass market paperback, which I knew was edited and missing a story. Unfortunately, the regular paperback edition is ALSO edited, with the story Way Up In The Middle Of The Air removed. Considering that one of the best stories in this collection, Usher II, is about the foolishness of censorship, the fact that editors have removed Way Up just takes ridiculousness to a whole new level. Can someone please list the specific editions which contain Bradbury's ENTIRE collection? That would be great.

Though Bradbury was no doubt a fine writer, I cannot agree with the blatant censorship that is shown by Harper Collins' to exclude the author's original content "Way in the middle of the air" a story detailing with racism in the American South.

What does Steam Punk, unicorns, and Angels Flight have in common? Probably everything. This is the type of place that you miss when you were never there; you miss it like a dream that escaped recall. How could they destroy a magical corner, a place of quaintness that reached to the stars? Too soon gone, at least we have this book to help chart the way back to something ripped away from us by clods.

We have quite a collection of these "Images of America" books and always enjoy the old photos and history. Never a disappointment. Brought back memories of riding the original Angel's Flight as a kid before they shut it down.

This book is absolutely terrific. It has great photos of Los Angeles in its early and "noir" years, around Angels Flight. A real find. I love this whole series.

The book is a wonderful wealth of information about long, gone Bunker Hill

this book is in very good condition like new. All pages were fresh and not bent or faded. I enjoy reading this book of old Los Angeles.

I really didn't know much about the Angels Flght. Especially all the details behind all of it.

O.W.Link was a brilliant man. He was a perfectionist and had a wonderful affinity for the mechanical. This book is his photographic recording of the final demise of stream railroading in the US in the mid-20th century. His images portray the power, majesty and wonder of this field without conceding any loss of flavor or fact regardless of what we now can call limited technology. He sought the drama of nighttime action and used monochrome as his canvas, at a time when electronic "flash" was a laboratory dream. Using banks and banks of manually placed lighting he produced images that rock us even today. As a retired Professional Photographer and avid model railroader I approached this book with a slightly jaundiced eye. I opened the book and began to wonder how I could hang these images all over my home. I compromised--the book remains opened on the coffee table for quick access and hours of loving wonder.Mr. Link's Genius found expression and this book is the absolute answer to the question: Was the Steam Age really that magnificent? If the book had a smell recovery page built into it, one could revel in the aroma of burning bituminous coal! If you enjoy steam railroading, photographic brilliance or just want to see the last hours of a by-gone time, here it is!

Love the book! Large pictures in crystal clear large frame format Mr. Winston is known for. What he did with 1950's technology is astounding. No digital technology was available. His use of multiple flashes to freeze enormous railroad steam engines is fantastic. Plus, the majority of his pictures take place in the dark of night in out-of-the way countryside locations in all types of weather. His venue will never be duplicated as his 5-year endeavor encompassed the last of the commercial railroad steam engines before Norfolk and Western lines converted to diesel power. Truly a magnificent book with excellent photographs and explanation of the difficulty he had in capturing a long gone view of America.

The many views most at night of the Norfolk and Western are simply fabulous. These are carefully planned pictures taken in the middle to late 50's during the last days of steam. The lighting was created especially for the pictures and give them a haunting look. Some of these pictures are the stuff dreams are made of.The view of the cover is a good example The last two parts of the book are dedicated to the Abingdon Branch that has been abandoned since 1977. One section is in color and is mostly daylight while the black and white section is mostly at night. Both are superb. The rural views along the Abingdon branch are unique and beautiful. Often the trains and tracks are almost background compared to the rural scenery. I purchased a used copy at a very reasonable price and was simply thrilled by the quality of the book itself and the photographs.

Others have commented that Winston Link's railroad photographs come to life with drama and mood. I cannot emphasize this enough, especially in this book which chronicles the last days of steam on the Norfolk & Western in a part of the US that probably viewed these beautiful locomotives as "modern." It's one thing to capture the trains, especially the locomotives, in views that make a tremendous narrative or statement, but Link goes much farther. He captures the faces of the real people who worked on those trains, ran the locomotives, operated stations (which sometimes served a general store for a community), or who simply rode them or lived near the rails. It is an emotional experience simply to travel from one end of this book to the other. We just turn pages; Link tramped through woods, mountains, villages, and rode countless trains to get these pictures, even winning the support of railroad management as long as he didn't get in the way of operations. Each page turn represents an historic trek. These are pictures of people living, working and traveling in a place and time. That a railroad ran through it seems almost incidental; a bonus. One is transported through time, as if any moment one of those people might speak, or a train's whistle might come reverberating through the valley.Much has been said about Link's night photography, but thousands of words cannot do these photos justice. If Ansel Adams was the preeminent photographer of Yosemite and nature in B&W, Link is nearly his equal on the other coast in documenting people and their machines. His black and white night shots are so good that you don't even WANT to see them in color. Nevertheless, the book contains some exquisite color daytime photography; Link wasn't limited to either medium. And while many have commented on how Link set up these night shots, it is very difficult to convey how much setup was involved. We're talking about many hours of studying the scene, placing lights, running wires with many banks of lights powered by the heavy storage batteries of the time, illuminating entire streets or a hundred yards of track for a single shot. When a massive Y-6 roared through town with 10,000 tons of coal behind it, there were no do-overs. Either he had prepared properly or not. The evidence shows that he knew his trade. These are spectacular photos, their kind not to be found anywhere else.In the past I have bought entire collections of train photos just for one single photo by O. Winston Link contained inside. When I saw this collection of nothing BUT Link's photographs I didn't stop to read the reviews. I used "One-Click" and had it in my hands in 3 days. It is simply one of my favorite books of all time, in any category. It's a rare chance to own masterpieces of the graphic arts. One further detail: the endpapers of this book (front & back) consist of a night shot of a single locomotive with a crew on board and on the ground in front of it. I think I remember it saying that it was a compilation of 7 shots. I am an amateur photographer with years and years of darkroom experience, but I honestly don't know how he printed that picture so flawlessly such that 7 photos comprise a full-length print in crisp detail and perfect night-time lighting with no visible seams. What can I say? The man was a master.Shooshie

I'm not a railroad enthusiast per se, but I have to admit I was captivated by the photographic artwork of O. Winston Link. This book abounds with not only great photographs, but Mr. Link has definitely defined Americana of the 1950's through his photography. As a child of the 50's I can definitely relate to the steam locomotives, by the beautiful sounds they made not only at rest, but also by the rhythm of their wheels, and the melodic shrill of their whistles. O. Winston Link is without question one of the greatest photographers of our country, and his photography shows it. This is a great book, and I recommend it to anyone interested in a bygone era.

I did not know of O. Winston Link until a friend of mine sent me another collection of photos of the Norfolk and Western. This is by far the finest railroad photography I have ever seen. Soon after receiving my friend's gift I bought this volume-- I had to see more photos. His work goes beyond technical gifts; his vision is what sets this work beyond all others.

Wonderful photos. They show not just trains but the people and the setting.
