Review

One of Amazon's Best Books of the Month A San Francisco Chronicle Holiday Gift Guide Pick "An enormous and sympathetic book.... It's rich with detail about Mr. McCartney's philanthropy, his knighthood, his taste in country homes, his dabbling as a painter, a poet and a composer of classical music.... The story of its subject's life from his childhood in Liverpool through the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 has lost none of its ability to charm ... One of the best stories the past century has to tell."―Dwight Garner, New York Times"Norman offers a fully-fleshed out biography . . . What Norman gets so very right are the feelings: the intense relationship between John and Paul with its curves and angles; the normality being a husband and father brought him; the improbability of being one of the most famous men in the world. The shelves are full of books about the Beatles, but fans will want to make room for this one."―Ilene Cooper, Booklist (starred)"The most thorough and insightful biography of Paul McCartney to date.... Paul McCartney: The Life is loaded with wonderful passages, fascinating stories and cracking humor... A masterful account, the kind of biography fitting McCartney's continued prowess and genius. Or, as McCartney said at the end of one Beatles take, 'Keep that one. Mark it 'FAB.''"―Jeremy Mikula, Chicago Tribune"Norman's portrait of McCartney is fascinating and exhaustive.... Norman lifts the curtain to show us the real guy."―William McKeen, Boston Globe"A thorough, objective telling of McCartney's story--in and out of the most famous band ever. But it's also a breezy read, considering the tremendous ground it covers."―Jeff Slate, Esquire"Norman is an enviably skilled pen-portraitist, with a consummate ability to conjure the presence of [McCartney].... A powerful sense of McCartney the man comes across in this book's evocative high points.... A capably executed biography, brimming with detail."―John Harris, The Guardian"A compelling narrative about a working-class Liverpudlian whose extraordinary musical gifts made him the most successful songwriter in history... McCartney emerges from [the book] as a textured but decent man."―Graham Boynton, Newsweek"Norman is thorough... and his book gives us a fuller McCartney than you'll find anywhere else."―Colin Fleming, Washington Post"Norman shows McCartney in all his colors: artist, songwriter, genius, family man, and businessman... Even those of us with bookshelves full of Beatles books and libraries of bootleg recordings will be surprised by what they read in The Life."―Laurie Ulster, bio."The once-for-all-time record of the lad from Liverpool whose song lyrics and boyish good looks broke hearts and whose career after the Beatles was almost as successful as his time with them."―Henry L. Carrigan Jr., BookPage

I purchased both the Kindle and Audible versions of this book because I like to both listen to and read at the same time using Audible Narration through whisper sync, so my review will be for both formats. When I started reading the first couple of chapters I was wondering if maybe I had made a mistake buying this book. I was very wrong. Phillip Norman did a great job of giving us an in depth look into Paul McCartney's life, the good and the bad, without making it a sleazy tell all. In short, we got to meet and know Paul McCartney. I am a life long Beatles and Paul McCartney fan, that spent over 20 years in the music business, and I know a lot about both, and this book was still a continuous smorgasbord of fascinating facts that made me never want to put it down. This book begins with his life before the Beatles, continues through the Beatles years, and then moves on through the rest of his life. The research is incredible, and the writing is done in such a way that by the time you finish you will feel like you know Paul McCartney.

This was an honest biography, with plenty of people from Paul McCartney's and the Beatles early days giving their memories of the events of McCartney's life. While there are several other biographies out there, this one goes back to McCartney's parents and paints a vivid portrait of life in Liverpool back in those days as well as the early formative years. It covers the whole of Paul's life up to now, and while Norman is respectful of his subject, he is also honest in his reporting, giving us a portrait of a man who, while undeniably a tremendous talent, a musical genius who helped to change the world, was in the end a real human being, with all the insecurities and flaws that real people have. This is definitely not a biography that bashes anyone, but rather paints a clear and revealing portrait of Paul and the important people in his life. Excellent read, a must-read for any fan of the Beatles and/or Wings and McCartney.

Philip Norman wrote one of the definitive early books on the Beatles, Shout!, and in that book, he didn’t present Paul in a very positive light. This book, however, shows a more balanced view of a man loved by millions but known by very few. While certainly not a perfect man (who is?) Paul is first and foremost an enormously talented human being with all the wonderful qualities people would hope to believe. Norman does show some sides of Paul that aren’t the most flattering but he does show a side of Paul that is very warm and compassionate. I think the only flaw of the book is that it doesn’t say enough about his musical talent. Paul is easily one of the most brilliant musicians of the past 50+ years and it would have been nice to see such commentary in the book. In any case, this book is a terrific read and a wonderful tribute to an amazing man.

This biography is a refreshing look at Paul McCartney's life and career. Of course most of the anecdotes from his years with the Beatles are not new, but the author does reveal some fresh stuff. Norman is a good writer and this is a very interesting and readable biography. The best parts for me were the details of his Wings years and new insight into his relationship with Linda. Finally, Norman takes an extensive look at his disastrous marriage to Heather Mills. Lots of juicy stuff in those pages including incredible details of the nasty court battle and the settlement. Overall, it's the best full life biography of Paul available. Highly recommended.

Pretty mediocre. Toward the end a major slog - all the details of his divorce etc. Zzzzzzz. The guy's Lennon book was better but that one wasn't great either. Never seemed to put much energy into analysing/explaining at length the relationship Paul had with the individuals in the group - during its existence and after. Very little on that put endless drivel about stuff that most people aren't really going to care much about - like the Liverpool Institute project. Great project but not looking for a lot of detail on it. Want to know what the relationships were really like. Positives: it did shed light on Paul's immersion in all things artistic/cultural in the mid 60s - things he never got full "credit" for. Also learned more about Linda and she certainly comes off smelling like a Red Rose Speedway for sure.

I was very disappointed in this. I felt like was reading something from the National Enquirer. If I had done my homework I would have realized that Philip Norman hated Paul McCartney for decades, holding a grudge for his perception that Paul caused the Beatles breakup.. He previously stated that John Lennon was "75% of the Beatles", but now that the author must be low on funds, he changes his opinion on Paul. He made numerous unnecessarily snarky and mean comments about George Harrison. He basically says that George had no talent of his own, and it was Lennon & McCartney's talent that had rubbed off on him. I guess that's why George's post Beatles albums were such flops. I'm no Beatles expert but I'd recommend sticking with Lewisohn's work and avoiding this trashy book.

The writing style may be better appreciated in Britain. We are still separated by a common language. The text did not flow very well. Too often, I had to stop and decipher the intent. Was it a hyphen or a dash? Why use so many dashes? Put another way, why bury a sentence within a sentence? At times, I wondered why I was subjected to so many details about people other than Paul McCartney. Overall, the book is interesting but reading it became tedious.

McCartney’s life is very well chronicled, so is there anything new to say?A little. Norman got access to some of McCartney’s close friends and partners, and of course wrote about the Beatles and Lennon. He’s made a business of covering this well trodden ground.Strangely, the book isn’t deeply focused on the music. And it’s very clear that Norman has little respect for McCartney’s post Beatles career, but nevertheless devotes a few hundred pages to it.There’s better books on this.

It is a compelling read, Though it is a heart breaking story, and I had tears in my eye, I did not want to put the book down. His eye for detail is impressive, he creates such vivid pictures, full of imagery and poetic language, Even though he often says that he was angry his tone is mostly gentle and forgiving. I had the opportunity to listen to his interview on BBC, and I was under the impression that he is rather timid, but there was no hint of bitterness which was to be expected of a person who had to endure so much. I have read a number of biographical books written by children who had to endure a hard life, but this one was far more engaging. M.G.Oliveira

I would recommend this book to anyone!!! Whether you are interested in the topic of child soldiers or not, this is a book that will make you want to read more about the topic. What Emmanuel Jal has been through is something that most people will never understand, but i believe that this book comes very close.

If you like the book ,"A Long Way Gone", this is similar in that in being a well-written memoir. If you have a heart for Africa..interested in learning more about child soldiers/children in warfare, then this would be a great read!

I have been wanting to read this book for years and finally purchased a little more than a month ago and was very excited to begin. The first 50 pages or so were difficult but manageable as the horrors that Emmanuel saw were unbelievable, yet something that should be shared. I finally put the book down for good yesterday at page 104 after walking away from it for several weeks distancing myself from the horrors of war that he and other children were forced to endure.Emmanuel did an excellent job of recapturing the horror, fear, and impossibility of his situation. My heart exploded when he watched in horror what was done to his family and knowing that he was not only too young to witness these horrible acts, but also because he was too young to even understand some of the events that were occurring. His descriptions were vivid and life-like...I still remember vividly the horror I felt when he described the events between he and his friend during training. My intent of this review is not to bash the book as it was very well written and drew you in. However, I do wish there were more reviews avaialable before I purchased the book that let me know how emotionally draining and heart-wrenching it was to read. I have never not finished a book that I thought was well-written with a great story line...However, the horrors of this situation truly made reading anymore unbearable.

nice story movie

I cound't put down Emmanuel's story. He digs deep not only into the detail of his life, but into his emotions throughout. Very good read.

This book moved me. It is well written and easy to read as it flows well. It is hard to read because of the emotion it provokes. Leaves the reader with much to contemplate about our very small world and how blind we can be to things outside our protected circles.

I bought it for my son,he not really like it,story is difficult to understand and boring, little disappointed
