Please understand that I am not reviewing Miss Austen's works but rather this particular presentation of her books. The set is lovely to look at and will look nice on a shelf or desk just because they are pretty. The binding is good and I really like it that each book has a ribbon marker so I won't be always misplacing my bookmarker! As many have stated, it is a very big shame that the stickers are on the back of each book. I am assuming that maybe because mine came in the winter months the sticker came off fairly easily, leaving no sticky residue. But it is obvious on every book that there was a sticker. Some show a dark mark the size and shape of the sticker. But most of them took off some of the ink on the beautiful covers when the sticker came off. So you have a mark and some of the ink is missing on many of them. This needs to be rectified. ( I have posted photos of the backs of some of the books.)The only other complaint I have at this point is that the case is just a tad too tight. Just a couple of centimeters added to the width and height would make it so much easier to remove a book from the case. As it is now, I have to turn the box over and dump the books out enough so that I can grasp the spine of the one I want to pull it out. I can only see this being more of a problem in the future as books tend to expand when read.I am interested in some of the other sets they offer, but right now would hesitate to spend that much money considering the flaws I mentioned.

I gave it four stars because it was a shrink wrapped box set, but each book had a price sticker on it. This wouldn't be a problem except that when removing the stickers, they took off the pink coloring on the book cover. I got these because the covers are beautiful, so it made me mad that a few of them are ruined now.

Beautiful set with everything she wrote. I'm enjoying the volumes very much. I wish those stupid stickers hadn't been on the backs of the books, though, because when you take them off they ruin some of the cover design and leave a mark where they were taken from.

This book seems to be someone's summarized version of Jane Austen's work. Each chapter appears to be shorter and has lost a lot of the descriptive language and detail from the original book. The cover is very pixilated, the text is probably a 12 or 14 point font that looks like something I can print from home. It also claims to have been printied in CA the same day I ordered it.Now I know why it was so inexpensive, yet still a complete waste of my money since I actually wanted to read the entire work of Jane Austen.

This is another of the books in the Austen Project, modern authors retelling the Austen classics. This one even has the same name as the original.Val McDermid is a successful author of crime thrillers, none of which I have read. She accepted the challenge of updating Northanger Abbey and chose to make the heroine, Catherine Morland, into a Twilight-loving, vampire-obsessed teenager. Since I'm not a big fan of Twilight or vampires in general - although I quite like Dracula - that artistic choice made it very hard for me to like Cat, as she is called in the book. She seemed utterly shallow and without substance, and since the book is all about her, that left the plot feeling quite flimsy and frivolous for me.So, we have Cat Morland, sheltered, homeschooled daughter of a vicar and his wife from the little village of Piddle Valley in Dorset. It is a happy, loving family with four children, a brother older than Cat and two sisters who are younger. The family has quite straitened financial circumstances and there's not much chance for travel, so it is very exciting for Cat when their childless neighbors, the Allens, invite her to travel with them to Edinburgh for the summer Fringe Festival. When they arrive in Edinburgh, Cat's world explodes with possibilities. She essentially takes the city by storm. She meets Bella Thorne who, almost instantly, becomes her BFF. Then she finds that Bella has her cap set for Cat's brother, James, who is a school friend of her brother, and she is equally determined that Cat will be paired with that odious brother, Johnny.Soon, Cat also meets handsome Henry Tilney at a dance and loses her heart to him, and she also meets his sister Eleanor, who invites her to come and visit them at their family home, Northanger Abbey. Cat looks at online pictures of Northanger Abbey and is entranced by the idea of it because it looks like a place where vampires might dwell. Arriving at the Abbey, she imagines that the Tilneys are a family of vampires, but the thought doesn't scare her; it only excites her.McDermid actually follows the original plot pretty closely, just changing carriages to cars and letters on paper to emails and texts and girls obsessed with The Mysteries of Udolpho to girls obsessed with Twilight and Herbridean Harpies. She makes a stab at updating the language of the teenagers, but that fell flat for me. Words like "totes" or "amazeballs" - I mean, are those even words? And do teenagers really talk like that? I don't have much opportunity to interact with teenagers these days, so perhaps I'm not the best judge...I really don't have the heart to summarize the entire plot here. There was no one in the story that I felt a connection with, and so even though the book was fairly short, reading it felt like a bit of a slog. I found myself missing the witty dialogue and beautiful language of the original. In fact, I think this book would probably be enjoyed more by someone who has never read the original and so has nothing with which to compare it. I can imagine that it might appeal to the readers of Twilight, for example, and if it could make those readers sufficiently curious about the writings of Austen to pick up the original and read it, that would be the best possible outcome.

The golden edged pages are so pretty and compliment the baby blue and gold cover! This is a very thick book and the print is somewhat small but to be expected since it is so thick. I only wish it had at least a few illustrations, at least at the beginning of each novel. So classic and elegant looking!

Emma is one of Austen's and my least favorite characters. Most matchmakers are bossy types and are universally in the MYOB (mind your own business) crowd. Sometimes she is definitely mean-spirited. She could have more positively spent her time perfecting her musicianship or working on her artistic talent. The illustrations were a reminder of the dress of the time and the households as well.It was fun to compare the movies available as well. The British BBC production definitely had the better casting. How would you feel about marrying someone 16 years your senior? The women of Austen's time had some issues we would not cope with as well. The book is definitely an eye-opener on Austen as an early Women's Lib advocate. We don't realize how good we have it. We can do anything we want these days.

If you want to preserve classics and like to read with a cup of a tea and a cozy chair, these are for you. Simple cloth binding is enhanced with vintage-style decoration. Thick paper and good, easy to read print. These books are comfortable to read, look great on the shelf.

I have been a fan of Clara Parkes' Knitters Review forever and have loved her other three books. This one is no exception. It is written with the yarn lover and knitter in mind. The book contains no patterns, but rather is a collection of reminiscences or essays by Ms. Parkes. She talks about her life as it relates to knitting and yarn. "This book is a collection of my own musings on stitches - why we work them, what they do to fabric, and how they have contributed to the fabric of my own life. For life really is a stitch. It has a beginning, a midpoint, and an end. It serves a purpose, and if we're lucky, it creates something beautiful and enduring."There is one essay that relates to steeks - sometimes we have to make a cut in something in order to give it a chance to become whole. In the chapter about the choreography of stitches she discusses her move to Tucson and the discovery of the rodeo. She also learns square dancing. She looks at myriad stitches and designers and compares them to different types of choreography. For instance, Kaffe Fassett is a modern choreographer and other designers are more traditional. There is a poignant essay about her parents' divorce and her trip cross-country. The essay on stashes really spoke to me. I have so much yarn that I could open my own yarn shop. Ms. Parkes discusses the need to cull stashes and compares them to gardens. "As hard as it is to say, I should point out that a healthy stash requires frequent and prudent weeding. It can easily get overrun before we notice what's happening". In her essay called Stitch Traffic she gives very sound advice, that "putting blind faith in anything is rarely a good idea, whether it's a GPS or a knitting pattern. It's far better to develop your own instinct, learn for yourself what works and what doesn't - and learn why". The discussions on swatching and slipped stitches are both humorous and poignant, pointing to the importance of connection and standing firm. In The Great Whodunit, Ms. Parkes talks about how "a good mystery book can be like a good knitting pattern. It takes you on an adventure, engages your mind, paints a pretty landscape, maybe even surprises you now and then, but always reaches the expected resolution." In Coming Undone, the author takes on the negative connotation of unraveling and provides a more positive definition like disentangling or solving a problem. I know that when I undo my knitting it is always to make it look better or to correct an error. I like the idea proposed in Making Martha's Sandwich, that any knitter is a real knitter, no matter how advanced they may or may not be.She writes with a serious, poignant and humorous manner, providing some history of knitting in several essays. As the book cover states, she "uses the metaphor of knitting to tell her own story". There are 22 essays that deal with topics such as divorce, leaving the bustle of dot coms for a more leisurely life in Maine where she lives in a town of 920 people with her partner, and the relationship of baking to knitting. I am an avowed knitter but do not read many knitting books. I read Clara Parkes for her wisdom, down-to-earth manner, knowledge and wisdom. I love it when she states that "'happily ever after' is a moving target. No matter how perfect any one sweater may be, it's only human to crave another. And another. And another." I would recommend this book to anyone who knits and loves yarns.

I've been acquainted with Clara Parkes' love of yarn and knitting since she first started her Knitters Review blog. It is the person behind the words (rather than the mere words) that gets the five star rating. She is reflective, introspective without being overly serious. She seems shy, yet doesn't erect a false self to keep us from knowing her. She's just quiet. These essays connect experiences that all of us have with knitting to experiences that most of us have as humans (and vice versa). Left me with warmer feelings than angora.

Really enjoyed these stories and would recommend to all those addicted to yarn of any kind. Would love to know what a non knitter thinks? Does it have relevance?

This book took me a long time to read. The language was a little too much for a fast read. I like the idea of comparing life to yarn, but it worked better for me in small doses. Clara is one of my favorite authors & reviewers. She was the "Yarn Whisperer" before that term was invented & I have subscribed to her "Knitter's Review" for years. I would love to see her write a mystery set in a yarn/bake shop! That would be fun!

This is one of those books that made me feel terribly sad when I reached the last page, because I enjoyed reading it so much. The book is full of lovely insights into both yarn and the lives of those who love it. I can see myself going back to it again and again, when I feel the need to bundle up in the literary equivalent of my favorite comfy sweater.

I have all of Clara Parkes' books, but I wasn't sure about this one. I usually only buy knitting-related books if they're reference or pattern books, and a memoir or collection of stories didn't seem like it would be very 'useful' to my collection. However, I got a Kindle for Christmas this year and decided to purchase the e-copy. It was a fun read and there were many times I caught myself laughing out loud -- but the true test of this book came when I was waiting on my boyfriend at the airport. There's a whole chapter dedicated to kitchnering, and I just happened to be at the toes of some socks when I was stranded at the airport with nothing else to do. I had no idea how to kitchner without directions, so I looked up Clara's anecdote in the book about the time she finally 'understood' how kitchnering works. It was just what I needed to finish the toe on my sock!

Throughly entertaining read. I would recommend this book to anyone with a background in fiber arts. Clara compares her life to the knitting process. It is meaningful to someone with knitting experience but may be lost on a reader unfamiliar with the process. I was so caught up in it that when I turned the page and realized I was at the end, I was startled. I think I was hoping it would go on forever!

I was a little disappointed in this book, I'm sure some knitters will love it, but I wasn't that crazy about it. I really like Clara Parkes when she was with Eunny Jang on "Knitting Daily TV." She knows her yarn, and I have other books of hers like "The Knitters Book of Yarn," and the "Knitters Book of Wool" that are really good.

As a typical American, I am somewhat weak in geographical awareness. What better way to improve that by having an analog helper on the wall at work. It's a great conversation piece, and helps with locating newly named countries. It has also inspired me to travel more, and now I have an idea of the region and surrounding countries.

2018 accurate

Great way to introduce geography to school-age kids. Enough details to keep them busy studying it for a while while learning about the world.

My kids love this map. I have it hung in our hallway at the eye level of my littlest. As we study our countries we look for them on the map.

As described. Quick turnaround. Thank you!

Amazing for room decor or class room

Nice heavy like paper, would buy again from seller
