About the Author

Piers Anthony, sometimes called Pier Xanthony, is the pseudonym of a Mundane character who was born in England in 1934, came to America in 1940, was naturalized in 1958, and moved to Xanth in 1977. His first story was published in 1963, and his first novel, Chthon, in 1967. His first Xanth novel, A Spell for Chameleon, won the August Derleth Fantasy Award as the best novel for 1977, and his fantasy novels began placing on the New York Times bestseller list with Ogre, Ogre. He shifted from writing in pencil to writing on the computer, and Golem in the Gears was his first novel created on the machine; naturally, the computer found its way into Xanth.

I think this is a very good book, as well as series. It's an intriguing world where all of your traditional tropes are twisted in the best ways. I know a lot of people think it can be kind of goofy, but you have to have fun with it. There is a reason they make comedy movies as well as drama movies. Not everything has to be 'Game of Thrones'.I started reading this series when I was younger and I'm now doing a reread of it since I've fallen behind on them. I do look at it with different eyes as I get older and now that I have better writing to compare it to, I can see flaws, but many of the flaws I see people attribute to the writer seem to me, to be flaws in the characters personalities that he worked through. Not every character has a revelation, but you usually see them grow significantly compared to their first appearance. Something else I like about the series is that with the exception of the first two books, each successive book in the series is about a different character. There is usually an important mission that a group of main characters goes on and the following book will be about one of them or another character that was introduced. The cast keeps growing and the world keeps getting more complex, counter to what some will say.I've highly enjoyed the series over the years and encourage anyone to pick it up and start reading them.

I got this for Kindle because somewhere I have the paperback.This is the first book in the Xanth series and Piers Anthony had me hooked on the series with this one.I will admit in some of the later ones, the puns start piling up too fast. Even being from a punny family, too many can make me ill. (Refer to Richard Amour's 'Get thee to a punnery'.) But most of them have some very sly puns. If you go a paragraph or so without a pun, you missed it. I'm still kicking myself for a few puns that got past me first time through. Then it is face palm time.

I first read a Spell for Chameleon and the rest of the Xanth series when I was 11 or 12 (I'm 43 now). I absolutely adored this series when I was a kid. The whole series is very punny and clever. I recently purchased the Kindle version of this book for my son. This series really is timeless. I loved it when I was younger and I love it as an adult. I highly recommend to any young reader looking for an entry into the fantasy genre.

A Spell for Chameleon is a very interesting book with an awesome premise. In the land of Xanth, every person has some type of magical power, be it a major power or minor. Bink, the main character, does not believe that it has any magical power, so he begins a journey to determine if he has any power or not. On this journey, Bink will encounter a couple of friends and numerous formidable foes. He will learn much about himself and Xanth. In the grand scheme of things for Xanth, Bink may be the most important person in the history of Xanth, but Bink does not know his importance, and only one other person understands just how important Bink may be. It's a grand adventure, that neatly concludes with a love story that you may not have realized that you were reading, and it does an excellent job of setting the stage for sequel in this series. Highly recommended

I had this on cassettes to listen to when I'd be driving long distances back in the ...late 80's-90's and, it was so good even in the abridged form. I hope they get an unabridged audio version to go along with the book soon. The story is both interesting, thought-provoking and entertaining. It's about people, about their quality & commitment. It's also a fantasy with Centaurs and all manner of other creatures and beings. Many of which are "people" in their intellect and therein are their motivations and characters also explored. Overall, it's a good story and a great read. Jump in.!

I love Piers Anthony books. This book is one of many in this set. He makes you use your imagination a lot through the whole book. He takes the simplest thing and turns it into something else. This book is so much fun to read. I read this book every chance I got. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen. I would recommend to anyone whole loves to through themselves into the fantasy world.

Pierce anthony has been my fav author since being a teen. His books helped me past some quite painful times.Jumping into Xanth made me feel free.Now this book is just as amazing as i remember it.Very smart and amazing writing the story just glows and pics you up.It’s about bink and having no talent and the puns and story just makes it rock. This is a magnificent fantasy novel. A Spell for Chameleon is the start of a great series and is, by far, my favorite book. Its sexual themes and references, and heavy vocabulary make it a little on the iffy side for children, but I cannot recommend this book more.Pros:-The lore is rich and enthralling. Obviously a lot of thought went into the land of Xanth.-A very good story with fantastic plot. If there are plot holes, I haven't noticed.-The novel is written in a way that allows the readers into the main character's thoughts to make a very engaging story.Cons:-Not for kids. Some of the words used in the book forced me to pause, refer to a dictionary, and look them up. And it refers to a lot of mature things, like killing, rape, and war.-The book, up until Chapter 2, drags on and on, and is rather boring and poorly written. After this, it picks up.-Character names are strange and seemingly whimsical. Bink, Zink, Fanchon, Jama,and Potipher are good examples.-The world can get a bit overly convenient. For example, magical shoe bushes grow fresh shoes, baked bread bushes grow fresh, baked bread. This, though silly at times, doesn't detract too much from the story, but I still found myself rolling my eyes and thinking "Well that's rather convenient."This book is fantastic, I've read it twice already, and still love it. It even inspired me to write a novel of my own. It was worth replacing my damaged copy to read it again.

I love P. Dangelico books and this story didn't disappoint.Reagan and Alice are two people that looking from the outside in don't belong together. She's had to work hard for the things she has, her education, her price possessions, she's a girl who learned to appreciate life and every single thing it has to offer. Reagan grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, going to the best schools, having whatever his heart desired, except for the most important thing in life, love. These two souls connect and develop a beautiful friendship and what comes out of it are two people who found their other half against all odds.I adored the slow burn of the story, the banter between Reagan and Alice was very funny at times, but always mature and respectful towards each other. Reagan and Alice were two multifaceted characters that made this story a joy to read, who brought all the feels to the storyline. There is a secondary story within the main story that is simply heartbreaking, but the author handled it with a great amount of thoughtfulness towards the parties involved. It wasn't all fun and games for these two, they make mistakes like couples usually do, and life threw some heavy curves their way that had the potential to destroy them not only as a couple but as human beings. And to make this story more memorable, the circle of friends that they surrounded themselves with not only help the story to remain lighter with their crazy sense of humor and back stories.I'm so looking forward to the second book from this series. I'm cheering for Dora and Dallas, Ms. Dangelico ;-)

Alice and Reagan's story is full of humor and smart dialogue from the first page, and I could not stop reading it. Their meet cute hooked me right away. These two looked completely opposite to each other, but they had great chemistry from the outset.Alice has been transferred from a small community college to a school filled with rich kids on the West Coast. She is living the dream, but it comes with a lot of stress to hold onto her scholarship and to keep her student job. Reagan is privileged and doesn’t seem to have a worry in the world. He is a jock, and a really nice, friendly guy. His parents are well-known Beverly Hills doctors, but they are everything he doesn’t want to be. Despite their mutual attraction, he has friend zoned Alice and doesn’t want to complicate things between them. His easygoing attitude hides the fact that he never really allows himself to be real with her. His vulnerability is raw and his anguish is heartbreaking.I enjoyed watching Alice and Reagan’s relationship develop as they gradually realize they could not live without each other, with a few bumps in the road along the way. These are real, believable characters, with real problems and facing them the best way they can. I loved to see them grow and find their own path to happiness.This book was a page-turner, with great humor. I loved the characters and their cute romance that had a lot of emotion behind it. They both have vulnerabilities and work together to get over them. There's good character development, strong conflict, and a great cast of supporting characters.

Nothing But Trouble is such a fantastic read. I love how Reagan and Alice meet in this one. Reagan and Alice may come from different backgrounds but it doesn't mean they can't relate at all to each other. in fact they each bring something more out of each other. Alice she is a strong, nothing is going to stop me, a little stubborn, has a big heart kind of girl. She may have issues taking help from others and her world may be falling apart with a streak of bad luck but nothing is going to stop her from living her life the way she wants That is until Reagan almost runs her over. He is athletic, not too snobby, looks out for everyone and carries everyone's weight on his shoulders kind of guy. Even though guilt played a big part of how Reagan friends Alice in the end that isn't everything. You feel the sparks start to take off in the very beginning as they get to know each other. Even when they friend zone each other when they both want more. I think that is what is needed for them to grow as a couple. If that didn't happen then the little angst in this one may have a completely different result. Nothing But Trouble is a fantastic read. You will fall hard for Reagan and Alice. This is a must read.

I love all of the books I’ve read by this author but I was a little nervous with the move to college age characters. I shouldn’t have worried. These characters didn’t come across as annoying kids. They dealt with real problems in realistic ways. If I had one complaint it would be that the ending was too abrupt but I’m guessing that was because the series will continue with other characters. I’m hoping we get lots of chances to see Reagan and Alice in future books.

Her past few books I have really enjoyed. She’s got a funny sense of humor. This move to college romance did not do it for me. I really did not care fir this one at all. I like a bit more grown up romance. This was just silly. I couldn’t care about either one of them. This is a bust fir me!!

Loved! I am not usually a big fan of young adult romance, but Nothing but Trouble is a winner! The love between Alice and Reagan is so tortured and romantic....I couldn't put it down. I hope the next book is about Dallas and Dora. I am ready to read the whole series!

I love P's writing. I've read all of her books and some more than twice and this one was just as good. I have small qualms with the ending and that there were just so many characters but I get. It's the set up for the series but for the most part I loved it and am looking forward to the next book. Additionally, I LOVE the fact that she writes diverse characters!! Please never stop!

Loved this book! Can't wait for the next characters! I love that there are 3 books releasing for this year and the last one next year! Keep them coming!

This book provides the reader with several avenues for approaching the topic of selfhood within the context of Chinese thought. Although primarily focused on Confucianism, the author provides significant examples form Daoism and Ch'an as the three tend to view selfhood in a similar light.I find it pretty evident that the motivation for the author to write this book can be found within the following quote from page 13. He writes,"Whenever my compatriots teaching in American universities assure me that a distinctive advantage of discussing Confucian ethics with an English-speaking audience is that we are unencumbered with layer after layer of commentary and sub-commentary sedimentation, I feel extremely uneasy. For one thing, I do not believe that it is possible to present an undifferentiated Confucian position on vital issues, such as the idea of the self, as if there were a trans-temporal wisdom which, once revealed, would remain essentially the same. There is no monolithic Confucian self to speak of."This essentially sums up the purpose of this book. The Confucian self is not an abstract entity that can be isolated and examined as it is always found within a greater social context and at best, dutifully pursuing cultivation in the midst of the present moment's dynamism. The author also addresses this expressive dynamism through the philosophy of qi and li. On page 37 he writes,"The unusual difficulty in making Qi intelligible in modern Western philosophy suggests that the underlying Chinese metaphysical assumption is significantly different from the Cartesian dichotomy between spirit and matter. However, it would be misleading to categorize the Chinese mode of thinking as a sort of pre-Cartesian naivete lacking differentiation between mind and body and, by implication, between subject and object. ...The continuous presence in Chinese philosophy of the idea of Qi as a way of conceptualizing the base structure and function of the cosmos, despite the availability of symbolic resources to make an analytical distinction between spirit and matter, signifies a conscious refusal to abandon a mode of thought that synthesizes spirit and matter as an undifferentiated whole. The loss of analytical clarity is compensated by the reward of imaginative richness. The fruitful ambiguity of Qi allows philosophers to explore realms of being which are inconceivable to people constricted by Cartesian dichotomy."This passage deftly demonstrates what is at the forefront of the author's mind when addressing the issue of self-hood as his intended audience is potentially those who carry such Cartesian biases. The strength of this book, I've found, is how he presents his ideas while constantly aware of these bias.Here are the chapters that make up this book. I. The "Moral Universe" from the Perspectives of East Asian Thought. II. The Continuity of Being: Chinese Visions of Nature. III. A Confucian Perspective on Learning to be Human. IV. The Value of the Human in Classical Confucian Thought. V. Jen as a living Metaphor in the Confucian Analects. VI. The Idea of the Human in Mencian Thought: An Approach to Chinese Aesthetics. VII. Selfhood and Otherness: The Father-Son Relationship in Confucian Thought. VIII. Neo-Confucian Religiosity and Human-Relatedness. IX. Neo-Confucian Ontology: A Preliminary Questioning.Overall this book had a tremendous impact on my understanding of how the individual relates to Heaven and Earth within the context of Confucianism and also clarified in several ways just what it meant by "self-cultivation." This is an excellent book and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the topic.

My nephews love to read and this story is both entertaining and colorful. They love these reading level books. They enjoy dinosaurs and trying to pronounce their names.

I love these series. But most important that my son does. I order 20+ books and he loves to read them (usually it is not that easy to make him read). I got mix of 2-3-4 levels for the second grader, second level is too easy, but it creates some fun and he reads them with pleasure. Love it, I would recommend it.

My son enjoyed this book and it was just right for his level. A little difficult, but not too hard that he couldn't get through it, and was able to learn from it. This one got both my boys interested in the topic.

Another great book for a beginning reader. Well written and informative. I like the way the books show pronunciations.

Love this book, arrived on time in perfect condition, my 5 year old son enjoys it. No complaints!!

My son loves it although he knows A LOT about dinosaurs already. Most importantly (to him) there is a sarchosuchus featured, which you don't see very often in any books about Mesozoic animals.

I recommend all the step into reading books. They keep even the most reluctant readers attention.
