Bought this book on a compulsive whim while obsessing about billiards. Holy crap Tarzan! This little book is changing my life - for the better. This fine piece of work has taught me that to manage endless compulsions, which become obsessive at about three times the speed of light - all I need to do is think about something else. It's that simple. For 65 years my personal management tool box has been empty. Now I have an effective tool to carry in it. SSRI's like Prozac can slow down what I call the motor in my head, thereby reducing the power of a particular compulsion/obsession, but SSRI's cannot actually help manage my OCD thought process as an adult. This wonderful book has given me a new lease on life. I can control my compulsions simply by thinking about something else. Another way of saying it is: I now manage "realistic expectations" as opposed to just bouncing around like a deranged ball in a pin ball machine of despair. Thank you so much Dr. Fancher. Your book has been quite unexpected.

I believe this book is a sincere effort to examine mental aspects of pool. It is relatively well written but promises more than it delivers. What's new? Its pluses are accurately debunking of many of the meaningless approaches regularly marketed to players trying to improve their skill and results. Minuses are criticisms of common approaches without offering solid reasons for the criticism. I got a few thing but it is too condescending.

Absolutely fantastic book. If you've been having trouble when you play in leagues or tournaments get this book. I'm fine playing for fun or practice then as soon as it's my turn for a match on league night I start with uncontrollable shaking, dry mouth and shoot horribly. This book helped me immediately change my attitude toward competition and significantly helped my match play.Thank you Bob Francher!

I haven't finished it yet but it has already given me some insight that I have found helpful. I have now read most of the book and I have seen a big difference in my game. I pay attention to my mechanics more instead of just staring at the ball trying to keep focus. I realize I need to work on mastering decisions and motions without overthinking it and without ignoring my innate knowledge.

After you hone your basic shotmaking skills, pool is almost entirely a mental game. There are precious few books on the topic of the mental side of pool and billiards (I know of only three), and this is by far the best of them. The author is a sports psychologist (and pool player), and he explodes a lot of the "mental myths" of pool, including undoing some bad advice written by pool pros and wanna-be pros who meant well but didn't know what they were talking about psychologically speaking. The prose is also a nice read, especially for a nonfiction book. I can especially recommend this volume for intermediate players who are having a hard time dealing with league or tournament competition pressure. Fancher may give you some mental tools to quit being a "Count Choke-ula".PS: If you order this used, be sure you are getting the revised 2002 edition.

This book is a great read. I enjoyed it but actually found a few parts to be a little redundant. Regardless I think it is a good resource for both advanced players and those just beginning the game. There are nuggets throughout that should help any player.

After buying a crock pot I embarked on a search for the tasty, easy recipes that would replicate the wonderful slow cooked pots my mother used to make. I was appalled to find that the bulk of collections and books called for store bought dried soups and dressings, and canned “this” or “that”.This book absolutely has everything I was looking for.It begins with recipes for basics you will need, such as broths and sauces. Not a soup powder in sight!There follows the easy, mouth watering recipes I was hoping to find. Casseroles and stews, stuffed peppers and yummy squashes, hearty soups, healthy breakfasts and desserts. Vegans and carnivores will find equal value in this book.Of course the low sodium is a big bonus. Things taste so much better without the horrible gobs of salt added to processed foods. I’m always puzzled as to why they add so much salt to food. It eliminates choice for low sodium dieters. If salt were left out, those who choose to ladel on the salt are free to do so. Sorry about the rant!So there. If you want all the good stuff, you’ll find it here.

Many of the recipes contain salt. I purchased this book and was disappointed. I already cook in my slow cooker with fresh produce, herbs, and spices. But I don’t cook with salt. Was hoping for some new unique recipes with new flavors and not with the amounts of salt the recipes describe to help the flavor along the way. Will try the recipes without the added salt and adapt with other things. The book itself is presented well and has some nice photos.

I purchased this to help with a low sodium diet but there is a lot of recipes that have salt as one of the ingredients. Not happy with this purchases at all. Not the seller's fault though.

Not quite as many recipes as I had hoped, several unusual dishes that I probably won't make. Some odd recipes, like cooking granola in slow cooker for 8 hours?! As for people who complained that some recipes include salt; it says low sodium, not no sodium. You can always not add the salt.

We homeschool and use Charlotte Mason methods. We purchased this book for an artist study.. It really is a great book to use when introducing children to an artist. There are several facts about the artist, her life, her friendships with other well known artists, and quite a,few color pictures of her paintings. I look forward to buying more books in the, "Getting to Know The Artist" series. We don't rely on one book for an artist study. We chose several others, as well. But, I'm so glad this book was available to purchase and read! We learned so much about Mary!

You have to read this. Mike Venezia does a great job of teaching children about artists. Mary Cassatt is crucial as she is the reason we Americans love Impressionists so much. When all of Paris was hating on them, Mary Cassatt was encouraging her rich American friends to buy the paintings of this once scorned group of artists. Way to go Mary! Way to go Mike for doing such a great job teaching about artists. We have a lot of his books and use them to educate our children before we go see museums. We read a lot of his books to prepare for our recent trip to France and Spain. My children enjoyed the museums more because they knew the artists.

Our family LOVES this series. If you get a chance to purchase the dvds they are also hilarious and educational.WE borrow the dvds from the library but the kids fell in love with a few of the artists so we bought those books. I'd love to have the entire series but it's expensive so i'll have to buy one at a time. I homeschool and we use these books as our curriculum base. We read through and I think of a project to go with it teaching a certain style, technique, skill, or medium. Meanwhile the kids are cracking up laughing and quote the books and movies. It is because of these books that my kids recognize the works of VanGough, Cassatt, Michelangelo and so far a couple more. We ahve gotten into discussions not only about art and artists but about thier lives, the history of thier times, the reason they painted that way, expressing emmotion, mental illness, patriotism, religion, determination and other morals. But if all you do is put the book on your child's book shelf they will have a common knowledge of artists most kids are never tought about. Beyond education they will enjoy it. They will laugh until they cry. They will talk about it and make inside jokes about the funny stuff and you may just learn something yourself. I grew up learning and loving art and I didn't know half of what I've learned form these books.

Great cute engaging story. This is a fantastic series; I just wish there were more female artists featured in this series.

Great description of Mary Cassatt and her work dedicated to women & children- tender!

This series by Mike Venezia is BRILLIANT!! I love the way he writes - so easy to read. He includes pertinent information, lots of the artist's drawings, and cartoons that make the material fun. The books are read alones for 3rd grade+ but my 4 year old enjoys heraing me read these books. What a fantastic way to introduce artists to young kids when they are still so interested and unbiased! I as an adult learned things too. We own various from this wonderful series!!

Loved this book! Made artist study for my second grader so easy! I can’t wait to add more to our library.

These books are great. Our daughter has been having us read them to her for a couple of years (she is five now). She loves art and really enjoys knowing who artists are and she will spot famous works of art when we are in public or watching tv or movies, reading other books etc.

Although not as good as 'Creme de Colorado' and 'Colorado Cache', my favorites, I wouldn't miss any of the Colorado Junior League Cookbooks!I'm always looking to see if I have missed any!

I own two other Junior League Colorado cookbooks and the recipes are all winners. This book stands out with its bright cover and beautiful illustrations. A joy to use!

I am a fan of the serie and have bought almost every book for my kiddo but I have to say, I am some what disappointed with this title in particular. I am questioning whether the author has a deep and thorough understanding of the technology himself. The book doesn’t explain the underlying technology correctly in my opinion.

The best part about this book is that Charlie is wearing a yellow dress and Diana appears to be from Canada. Otherwise, this is a book has confusing illustrations and does not really explain blockchain to babies, children, teens (mine didn't get it), or adults.

A great book for 2 - 4 year olds. In a boardbook, it explains the concept of virtual currency, transactions, as well as valid and invalid transactions with respect to verification by the blockchain. Nicely presented and illustrated. I wouldn't expect much more for the intended audience. A great addition to the series!

I started reading couldn't put it down , I finished the book in one day it was one of James Patterson's greatest works . He put so much emotion into his work that you actually can feel the pain of the participants . I hope there is another book coming soon .

to the formulaic process of letting a name author reap the royalties for making a mockery of his rightly earned reputation. I knew better than to expect much, but I needed a cheap way to spend a couple hours. Still got less than I payed for.

I liked that it is a true story. The build-up took a long time and the solution and follow-up seemed to be cut short

Patterson's cheap attempt to get more books out an make a buck. Not well written for true crime.

This is two "books" in one. The first story captivates you right off the bat only to leave you hanging at the end. I will not purchase another true crime book of his. I've never been so disappointed. I could care less about reading the second book since I'm sure he will do the same for the ending. That's 9.95 I will never get back!

Hard to follow. An older couple get beat up and left for dead. Then later it leaves them at their door facing what could be a hood. Then we are in another story where a cleaning woman and a young boy are stabbed to death at the young boys home. I thought the book was very disturbing. Won't be reading any more of Patterson books.

I love true murder mysteries. I would like to see more of them by this author. I don't like fiction. This was a great book. Could hardly put it down. I love the way he tells a story. I like his short chapters and he doesn't go into a lot of detail about the characters in his books like so many other authors do.

I've read nearly every single book by James Patterson, and I've enjoyed every single one! I get so excited when I find out that there's a new Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, or Women's Murder Club book out!! I also enjoy the Private series, and stand alone books!! If I'm not his number one fan, I'm close to it!!!!

Owls have a special place in our household. To begin with, we live on Owl Creek Road. Scattered throughout the house are a dozen or so figures of owls in wood, stone, and ceramic, as well as a few drawings of owls. Owls are in the neighborhood, and recently as I stepped out the back door a Screech Owl glided down no more than two feet over my head and perched in a piñon about fifteen feet away. So THE HIDDEN LIVES OF OWLS was a natural for me.When author Leigh Calvez became fascinated with owls she began taking trips to see different species, often with expert owl naturalists. Since Calvez lives in the Pacific Northwest, most of those trips took place in that region. In THE HIDDEN LIVES OF OWLS, Calvez writes about her owling missions and the birds she saw. The book is instructive for someone like me who has an affinity for owls but is not very knowledgeable about them. Serious students of owls, however, may find it rather simplistic. In addition, while Calvez touches upon some of the complicated issues relating to the prospects of long-term survival of several owl species, she does not discuss any in detail.The owls Calvez writes about are the following: Northern Saw-Whet Owls, Flammulated Owls, Snowy Owls, Northern Spotted Owls, Barred Owls, Burrowing Owls, Northern Pygmy Owls, Long-Eared and Short-Eared Owls, and Great Gray Owls.I learned a fair amount. For example, I had never read before -- or if I did, it had not stuck -- that the disk-like face of (most) owls funnels sound to their ears, which are asymmetrically placed, one higher than the other; this enables owls to better pinpoint prey in three dimensions during their nighttime hunting. (Pygmy Owls, which are daytime predators, rely on sight more than hearing, and they don't have the facial disk common to most owls.) I also learned about the asynchronous hatching practiced by most owls. They do not postpone incubation until all the eggs in the clutch are laid; instead they begin to incubate each egg immediately after it is laid, with the result that chicks in the same nest can be up to two weeks apart in age and development.I have several quibbles with the book. For my preferences, Calvez tends too much towards anthropomorphism, as if the owls she is watching think like her and have feelings like her. The book also is a tad too personal and sentimental for my taste. The writing is congenial, but at times rather mindless (for example, we are told that with life in the wild "there are no guarantees", and in describing a climb up a steep slope, Calvez writes "I slipped and slid, one step forward and two steps back" -- How, then, did she make it to the top?). Finally, I find the subtitle of the book -- "The Science and Spirit of Nature's Most Elusive Birds" -- rather fatuous. Still and all, I enjoyed the book.

Only about a third of this book is about owls at most; another third is about the author and another is gratuitous musings the editor (if any) neglected to excise. There are no photos or drawings of the owls or their habitats; nor, of the people or paraphernalia described in muddled detai. Each chapter has a handsome but iconic drawing of each owl that would be very nice on a calendar but don’t convey the particular spirit of the i particular owl portrayed. Finally, the writing is a slog. It you’re curious about these awesome creatures, there are much better alternatives.

I really enjoyed this book. It felt like a gentle step into the life of the woman writing it, and also into the lives of the birds that she found. I liked the personal comments she made about herself, as she worked and learned to see these birds. For those who didn't like her personal reflections, maybe the problem was in the title, referring to the science of these owls. Anyone can pick up a bird book, and read about the details of a particular bird, which this does have, but really what I liked was this woman's story as she visited and in some cases worked with some of the experts in the field. I could relate to those feelings, and enjoyed settling in and reading about the birds, and her. She did not write this as an expert, but as someone fascinated with owls, and interested in learning more, and experiencing their lives. I didn't get bored. I like the word gentle, to describe what she has created here.

This is a delightful book for anyone who loves the raptors. Naturalist Leigh Calvez describes her several adventures seeking to sight a variety of owl species in and around her home in Washington State and beyond. In some cases she tags along with the pros, helping to net and band the birds, from tiny Screech Owls to Snowy Owls and Great Greys. There are astounding facts on every page and commentary concerning species survival as ecological niches are affected by human populations. She is a bit too sentimental about her subjects, perhaps, in attributing human qualities; but that is easily forgiven in this informative and enjoyable book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For the hiker, naturalist, bird-watcher or enthusiast, this book is a real treat. The author participates in actual owl sightings, tagging and weighing specimens with ornithologists and adds profiles of each species for beginners to learn how best to spot owls.

An easy read but not as complete as I'd hoped. The author gives a lot of personal info- names, places, reactions and anecdotal info but leaves out many species. Primarily about Oregon, Washington ( her home on Bainbridge Island) and Alaska. A chatty saunter through the info.

A fantastic factuallywritten book, that reads like a novel. I loved this book so much I started it again as soon as I finished it because there's so much to understand about these beautiful birds!!

I bought this as a gift for a serious nature-lover, and he really enjoyed it. He said he'll never look at owls the same way again, and gives the book a major thumb's up.
