David Carr gives an excellent presentation that helps Western readers understand the form of the original Hebrew text. His primary thesis is that the form of the text, without word dividers and markers, was needed to be well-known by the reader prior to the public reading of the text. His theory is that the purpose of the text was primarily a prompt to aid the reader remember and recite this already well-known text. This form meant that the reader could easily recognize large sections, rather than read individual words. The purpose of the recitation and memorisation of the writing was to ensure that the tradition was "written on the listeners' minds and hearts". He gives examples of writings of surrounding ancient cultures to reinforce his ideas regarding Israel's writings.

This is an excellent discussion of writing and its relationship to orality in the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean worlds, with special attention to the Old Testament and early Judaism and the cultures that they most closely drew from. The book is full of learning and accessible to any careful reader. The only drawback I can think of is a small one: throughout Dr. Carr highlights the factors of class and power, seeing literacy and curricula in all periods mostly as a way of establishing and reinforcing the dominance of elites--not a terribly uplifting scenario. At the very end, he voices a healthy awareness that the same could be said of "professional biblical scholars" in the academic mode, like himself. But, unfortunately, having painted himself into that corner, he ends with no indication of a viable way forward and with no rethinking of the restrictive understanding of culture and truth that generates the problem in the first place.

Fors us, to read and write is almost the real Sixth Sense. It's something we do as if it was part of our humanity. Some people rank people's ability and judge that some are more knowledgeable than others at reading or writing. But, is it true? Not really when you read this book. The road to our present prevalence of reading and writing in a surface that really don't exist (a computer screen) and then store the written text nowhere in space but in magnetic encoding that doesn't resemble anything related to the form of the type we use to convey meaning and then realize that our textual production is fragmented in thousands or even millions of bites scatered around the world in servers out of our country which makes it imposible to dig the text out of somewhere... Well its a very strange road. No road at all.The only way to realize the immense distance between where we began and where we are is through reading this fascinating book which takes us on that journey through the history of textual development. After reading this astounding book we'll think again what we are doing and what we pretend when writing something such as this review nowhere in reality expecting that someone somewhere will enjoy the oportunity to read this book, which if in Kindle form, it really doesn't exist as something resembling the original intent of humanity. To read and write without actually reading or writing anything real seems an oximoron. Read this book and it will become dogma.

One of the most difficult areas of ancient life for scholars to understand is the period when oral traditions still held as much importance as the written word. At one point "written texts served as a crucial media to facilitate oral learning" (p 27), so important were the oral traditions to ancient cultures. Yet all we have left to decipher the older oral cultures is the scanty echoes we find for it left in writing.Much of what survives, from the Illiad to the Atrahasis epic, clearly show evidence of having been performed orally first. But how accurately were things passed on? From the evidence, enormous care was given to accurate memorization. For Second Temple Jews, oral tradition was considered the equal of the written scriptures, and as binding (Josephus-Antiquities 10.2.1 XIII,297 and Philo -10.2.2 The Special Laws IV 143-150) so, surely, great care was taken in passing on oral traditions. In ancient Israel there is plenty of evidence to suggest a vigorous educational system. Abecedaries have been found, and, "Over the recent decades, archaeologists have uncovered a significant number of ancient Israelite educational texts, correspondence, tax receipts, and graffiti" (p 112) indicating a similar situation to education throughout Mesopotamia, especially in Summaria and Greece. The evidence suggests young boys were taught within their own family, if the father was a scribe, or in a very small house school. Education was based on memorization of the culture's important epics or texts.Ben Sira refers to at least one formal school and the Qumran texts provide lots of examples of educational exercises. "Jubilees provides similar pictures of priest-centered small-scaled, family-oriented forms of textuality and education" (p 204).Qumran is especially interesting because the texts show clear evidence that learning was of vast importance. There was "an ongoing community of study, where every group of ten must always have an interpreter of the Torah day and night, relieving one another in shifts, reading the scroll aloud, investigating the law, and blessing the congregation" (p 218).This is not to say that the evidence shows that the entire culture was literate. On the contrary. The Second Temple Jews needed their priests to be literate, and they also needed a large number of scribes for taxes and correspondence. But there was little point to the average farmer knowing how to read. Although Josephus states that the Law requires all children 'to be taught letters (Ag.Ap I.60).Acrostics in the Bible point to the early educational system in the Bible, as does Duet 6:6 reminding parents to repeat God's words to your children, to "recite them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise".Memory was the foundation of all education in the ancient world. You most certainly did not have to be a member of the elite to be literate or well educated. Many of the upper class Romans had slaves who read to them. And teachers were widely regarded as lower class, poorly paid, and of no social consequence.Carr argues that writing began for the Jews in the Davidic-Solomonic period "a period the Bible depicts as the time of emergence of city-state structures" (p 163). Whatever education there was during this time would have been scanty, as the epigraphic evidence suggests, "that any such early forms of textuality and education pale in comparison to the development of the later prexilic period" (p 164).By the Second Temple period, there is clear archaeological evidence for synagogues, which became "sites for study and prayer" (p 243).

Amazon.com Review

Something strange happened to the Enron Corporation in the early 1990s: It went from a company that traded in tangible goods to one that dealt in pure abstractions, with shoddy accounting practices, astonishing compensation packages, and smoke and mirrors to obfuscate this new reality. Company auditors, Sherron Watkins among them, warned top Enron execs from CEO Kenneth Lay on down that the companyÂ’s increasing reliance on cooked books and phony reports "will implode in a wave of accounting scandals." As anyone who played the stock market or watched Enron suits do the perp walk on the evening news a couple of years ago will remember, thatÂ’s exactly what happened. Texas Monthly editor Swarz and Watkins team up to offer this account, rich in anecdote and numbers alike, of what went wrong and who made it so. Though even-handed throughout, they serve up plenty of righteous scorn for the corporate leaders who enriched themselves as the company disintegrated, and for the name-brand politicians who abetted them. Though Osama bin LadenÂ’s pawns barely dented the U.S. economy, observes Alex Berenson in The Number, Lay and his lieutenants brought it to its knees. SwartzÂ’s and WatkinsÂ’s eye-opening account will rekindle new indignation over unpunished crimes and well-rewarded hubris, and it ought to be required reading in business schools henceforth. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly

Although Watkins, the Enron executive who wrote the anonymous memo that blew the company's troubles wide open, is listed as this book's coauthor, the writing appears to be all Swartz. The Texas Monthly editor uses Watkins as an extensive source and treats her career at Enron as a major narrative thread, but her account of the energy company's financial misdealings casts a much wider net. The book offers particularly strong perspective on some of Enron's wilder escapades, like its disastrous foray into Internet broadcasting, and an unsettling body of evidence about Enron's possible manipulation of California's energy crisis. It does a stunning job of chronicling the power games within Enron. (Although he's not named as a source, it seems likely former CEO Jeff Skilling must have granted at least one interview off the record.) This version of Enron's history is as richly detailed as Robert Bryce's Pipe Dreams, but without that version's overtly moralizing tone; Swartz lets the facts speak for themselves. Watkins's input, interspersed throughout the story, offers a personal perspective on the cutthroat competition among the "hungry, restless, and tightly wound" Enron staffers, especially when she herself is at her most aggressive. The depiction of her gradual awareness that something was wrong, and her efforts to get her superiors to address the problem, helps make the financial crisis understandable on an emotional as well as an informational level, and provides an effective anchor to all the other sides of Enron Swartz includes.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

More information is laid out in this book that was not covered the "The Smartest Guys in the Room". Read them both to get the full story of this event. But back to Power Failure - Lay, Skilling and Fastow (among others) are crooks, plain and simple. What is more disappointing is that so many banks, law and accounting firms were lured into the web of deceit weaved by Enron executives. Read more $$$$$ is better than integrity and honesty. The few honest employees/consultants that were in the know, who showed genuine concern for the events that lead to the collapse were out cast as the ones that did not "get it".The real losers (not in a negative context) were the hard working honest employees of Enron, who, poured life savings into a company that was successful on paper only. I am truly sorry for the Lay family of the loss of Ken, but he cheated the legal system by not being able to serve his sentence for his evil deeds. The author does a great job of taking complex terms and concepts and explaining them so non-business/finance folks like me can easily understand what was right and what was wrong with what Eron was doing. I can assure you that Eron knew the difference and chose to take the wrong road. Had Lay, Skilling and other done it the right way - Enron would probably still be a thriving entity in the energy community today.

Great explanation in distinct detail of a company gone bad. Highly recommended. A good page turning read. You will enjoy this book.

Everyone is familiar with the story of Enron Corporation, but do they really know what factors initiated the destruction of this world-respected company? While the outcome is obvious, few people are knowledgeable about the cause of this atrocity. The media spun this news event into a tale of good guys versus bad guys - the powerful executives hurting the weaker, low ranking employees. But the profoundness of this case is that such a scandal can occur at any corporation. As effectively illustrated in Power Failure, the handiwork of CFO Andy Fastow blurred the lines of legality so indistinctly, that it was difficult for several renowned legal firms and accounting firms to recognize as unethical. It was not an obvious shuffling of numbers that inflated earnings over $4 billion dollars, but gray areas that bordered fair accounting and federal crime. The discreetness of the financial operations is what hid billions of dollars in debt from investors, other executives, and auditors. After reading the book, it is evident how such a scheme could slip past the CEO without notice. The best aspect of Power Failure is that it describes the malignant financial manipulations in detail. It perfectly describes how Enron used accounting practices like FAS 25 to book earnings before they could be earned. It shows how Enron used fair value accounting as an unfair means of shuffling assets and making profits. It shows Andy Fastow's the gradual chipping to create a complex network of special purpose entities, which turned into a recipe for disaster.Power Failure does a good job debunking many of the misunderstandings that surround the Enron case. Despite the media glamour as a hero, the "whistleblower" Sherron Watkins actually played a minor role in exposing the scandal. The mysterious suicide of accountant Cliff Baxter really had no hidden agendas. Questions can also be raised as to Ken Lay's participation in the event, despite his insider trading of stock.Perhaps the greatest strength of Power Failure is that it can show executives of other companies what to watch out for. Students and accounting buffs will also find this a worthwhile read. Being knowledge about the Enron story may even prevent such an incident at your company.

Very good information.Thanks.Enrique.

I recommend reading "Conspiracy of Fools" first to get to know the cast of characters. Then read this to get a participant's perspective. What is shocking is how easy it was to steal millions. The answer is chicken oversight.

Unless you are a corporate bean counter and have a firm foundation of the Enron debacle, I suggest you read Robert Bryce's *Pipe Dreams: Greed, Ego, and the Death of Enron* before reading "Whistle-blower" Sherron Watkins' story, here with the help of Texas Monthly's Mimi Swartz. *Power Failure* is focused more on Enron's people and personalities than The Big Picture. If you are clueless about "Mark to Market" accounting, return to *Pipe Dreams* and do not collect your now worthless Enron-backed Pension. The photos are more plentiful here and the personalities come alive in their wicked glory. There are no footnotes, and few quote attributions - which can lead to credibility issues. What was her motivation? What did she know and when did she know it? Why wait so late? There is one cool -and it's even attributed- quote, which, unfortunately, Azon's "editors" will not let me quote here in its entirety. It goes something like this: Senator Peter G. Fitzerald to Kenny-Boy (Pres. G.W.'s pet name for him) Lay: You're perhaps the most accomplished confidence man since Charles Ponzi. I'd say you were a carnival barker, but that wouldn't be fair to carnival barkers.Reviewed by TundraVision

Good read.

Great read! I didn't know much about the Enron Scandal, but got a great understanding of how it all unfolded. Would highly recommend for anyone interested!

Chapter One“Excuse me. You’re in my seat.”Anne brushed her long, blond hair out of her blue eyes and squinted at the man standing next to her. His hair was dark with the kind of deep side part used to disguise the early stages of baldness, and his charcoal gray suit, light blue shirt, and red tie were all slightly rumpled. Still, he looked vaguely familiar.“I always book 2A.” He gave her a condescending look.“Oh, sorry. I guess you’re right. I’m supposed to be in 2B. I’ll move,“ she said, picking up the letter she’d been writing and grabbing her bag.“Forget it.” He sighed loudly, dropping his briefcase onto the aisle seat. “Just stay. I’ll take B.”“Whatever.” She rolled her eyes and focused again on her letter, making sure she hunched over it so he couldn’t peek. She was in no mood to be messed with by some balding old fart. It was because of old people like him (namely her parents) that she was on this stupid plane in the first place. Did they really think that buying her a first-class ticket would lessen the pain of being dragged away from everything she knew and loved? Like the group of close friends she’d had since childhood, her hard-earned status as captain of the dive team, and Justin, the love of her life who she’d been dating for the last year and a half? Did they really think they could buy her off with an oversized seat, hot towels, and a choice of six movies? The plane pushed away from the gate and the flight attendants asked everyone to direct their attention to the safety demonstration on the video screens. But Anne refused to look---there was no way some stupid video could save her from a crash. Thanks to her mom’s affair with the senior partner at her law firm, and the bitter divorce that immediately followed her dad walking in on them, Anne’s life as she knew it was completely crashing down around her, and there was nothing she could do to save it.“Sir, you need to turn off your cell phone immediately.”Anne looked up to see an attendant with her hands placed firmly on her navy-clad hips. She was scowling at Mr. 2B. “Sir, don’t make me say it twice.”“Excuse me,“ he said, putting his hand over the mouthpiece and glaring. “Do you know who I am?”“Yes, Mr. O’Rourke, I’ve seen your show. And if you don’t turn off your phone right this minute, we will return to the gate so you can disembark and continue your call while we fly to Los Angeles without you.” She reached up and smoothed her blond French twist.Anne watched him snap his phone shut and mumble something under his breath as the attendant walked away. Oh my God, no wonder he looks familiar. It was Bob O’Rourke from that news show on FOX. And she was sitting in his favorite seat, and she’d even rolled her eyes at him! But he was kind of a jerk, so she didn’t feel too bad about it.The plane began its runway roll, quickly gaining speed. This was the moment when Anne would normally reach over and hold her dad’s hand, until the wheels lifted off the tarmac and retreated into the belly. She looked over at Bob O’Rourke, glasses perched on the end of his nose, scowling at a stack of papers in his hand, and she knew better than to even try. She was on her own now, in more ways than one.She closed the window shade, fearing she might cry if she glimpsed the diminishing East Coast landscape, then reread her letter. But halfway through, her throat grew hot and tight and her eyes started to sting, so she quickly scribbled at the bottom, telling Justin how much she loved and missed him. Then she folded the letter into a perfect rectangle, stuffed it into an envelope, and shoved it deep inside her purse. She was just drifting off to sleep when that same attendant came by and asked if they’d like anything to drink. And after listening to the very important Bob O’Rourke grill her about the available wines and their grape origins, Anne was feeling so bad for her she said, “Um, I’ll just have a bottle of water. I don’t need a glass or anything.” Then, determined to ignore the famous jerk beside her, she put on her headphones, extended her footrest, and turned on her in-seat video unit.On channel 3 they were showing that movie, Blue Crush, but Anne flipped right past it. No way was she gonna watch a bunch of sun-struck surfer girls talk about the beach and “killer” waves. She’d be forced to live among people like that soon enough, and she was in no rush to get there. She was down to just a five-hour cushion between her beloved old life and her dreaded new one, and she was determined to make the most of it. The only surfing she planned on doing was channel surfing. She thought about her last phone call with her dad, and how he sounded so excited when he told her about the house he’d bought. “It’s in a private gated community called Laguna Cove, and we’re right on a cliff overlooking our very own beach.”“We have our own beach?” she’d asked.“Well, we have to share it with the neighbors.” He laughed.“Is there a pool?” Anne remembered asking.“No, honey, there’s not. But I think you’re really gonna like it here if you just give it a chance.”Easy for him to say, since he’s never home much anyway, always away on location, or busy schmoozing with fellow movie execs. And how could she possibly like a place with no pool? Diving was her passion! She’d spent the last three years at her private school, earning a reputation as a skilled and fearless competitor. And then, right when she finally makes captain, they yank her and send her to some stupid California beach town that’s probably filled with pot-smoking hippie surfers named after flowers. She wasn’t being negative, she told herself, just realistic. The flight attendant reappeared with a bottle of water for Anne and a glass of red wine for the jerk in 2B, who was currently missing in action. “I’ll just set this here for when he returns,“ she said. But by the time they came by with the meals, he still wasn’t back.“Do you know what happened to the person that was sitting here?” Anne asked the male attendant with a deep tan and tightly cropped, bleached blond hair. “I think his name was Bob O’Rourke?”“He moved to 5C. Looks like you’re on your own. Do you need more wine?” he asked, motioning toward the untouched glass.“Um, no. Maybe in a little while.”Then, the second he was gone, Anne craned her head around and peered down the aisle at 5C. Sure enough, there was Bob O’Rourke, napkin tucked into his collar, smug nose buried deep into his wine glass. Carefully picking up the wine next to her, she placed it on her own tray. Then she looked around nervously, to see if anyone noticed, but nobody seemed to care. Besides, the attendant guy thought it was hers, so it may as well be.She lifted the glass to her nose and inhaled just like that O’Rourke guy did. Though she wasn’t exactly sure what she was supposed to be sniffing for. Was it to see if it’s rancid? And what did rancid wine smell like anyway? She lowered the glass to her lips and sipped cautiously. Sometimes she and her friends drank beer and once last New Year’s, champagne, but this wasn’t too bad.So she took another sip.And no one seemed to notice she was still four years away from her twenty-first birthday.Maybe flying first class wasn’t so bad after all.“Miss, Miss. Excuse me, we’ve landed.”“What?” Anne opened her eyes to find the blond attendant with the French twist kneeling next to her. “Are you feeling alright?” she asked, eyes narrowed with concern.“Um, yeah. How much longer?”“We’re here.”“What? Oh my God! Okay, just let me get my stuff,“ Anne said, running her fingers through her tangled, messed up hair and searching the seat back pocket for her bottle of water. The inside of her mouth felt like the Mojave Desert.“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked again.“Yeah, really I’m fine,“ Anne assured her, even though she felt the exact opposite of fine with her throbbing head and stinging eyes. And where is that damn water bottle?“Well, we’re laying over and our van is waiting, so you really need to hurry.” She stood and ran her hands over her tight blue skirt.“Okay, okay, I’m ready. Do you know where baggage claim is?” Anne asked.“You can follow us.”Anne stumbled behind the flight crew, listening to their laughter as they made fun of Bob O’Rourke. And even though she had no idea what their lives might really be like, at that exact moment she would have traded places with any one of them, no questions asked. Because at this point just about anyone’s life looked better than what she was in for.Okay, maybe on the surface, moving to Laguna Beach, into a big house with a private beach, didn’t sound so bad, but it was all relative to what she was leaving behind. She shifted her purse to the other shoulder and mentally scolded herself for drinking too much, passing out, and generally wasting the past five hours on the plane. And now she didn’t even have time to freshen up, since she knew her dad would be wait...

Let me start by saying that I haven't read anything by this author that I've been a fan of. That being said, I didn't care for this book either. There wasn't much substance. The characters were shallow and there wasn't much background on any of them. It seemed to me that the author just skimmed the surface. Anne moves to California from the East coast. She has a hard time fitting in for a few weeks then finally makes friends with a group of girls. The whole group accepts her except for Ellie. Some inner turmoil is hashed out and then the story ends. The ending is rushed and felt very disconnected from the rest of the story. I can easily say I won't be looking for anything else by this author.... on sale or not.

I really wanted to like this book a lot more than I did, but it was still a fun read. The ending just kind of fizzles out for me. I know it's fiction, but it almost sounds as though the editor had too much input on changing the ending.

the book was ok but I didn't really like that all the characters basically had their own views in the story. it made the story suck a bit more than it already did.also I was kinda hoping/wondering if maybe Jake and Anne could have gotten together.another thing is that the story kinda left me hanging especially since there is no sequel to it.but overall I still enjoyed the book and story.

I love Alyson's books, but this one, in my opinion, weren't as great as her others. Would be a good read for a pre-teen to maybe age 16 or so.

This book was absolute shallow garbage. It goes back and forth, and its like the same thing over and over again. "Oh This guy is cute but I already have this guy, so why am I even looking? But wait why isn't he flirting with me why doesn't he like me? Every guy likes me. How am I not his type?"The ending seemed like it shouldn't have been the ending I felt cut off and like there should be a sequel which probably wouldn't be worth reading either. I have doubts about what this author is even capable of. I regret spending four dollars on this book. Its that bad. Don't waste your time. It has pretty much no plot and leaves so many things unresolved and ambiguous. I just hated it.

Not my fave

The books should be great but it's not for me it's for a Christmas gift

I bought the hard copy of this years ago when borders was still in business. I just got around to reading it. The story pulled me in in the beginning, but left me frustrated for a couple reasons.*spoiler* 1) just when I think we're going to have major conflict or development, absolutely nothing happens and you're meant to just accept the ending that doesn't really tie up any ends at all. We learn the secret that Ellie's passion ISNT surfing, but she wins the comp and all is great in the world, the end. Huh? Also Anne has the hots for more than one guy obviously but then we're supposed to assume everything is back to normal with her and Chris when nothing shows us that. What?2) we don't really go to deep with any of the characters. It's all surface. And where the heck did Ben come from? So random and unexplained for him to become that big of a part of that storyline.A weird second half to what I thought would be an interesting love triangle/coming of age book. I am now def too old for this young adult stuff, but I think this was pretty weak for any target age group. Also - I'm shocked to learn there is no sequel when I'm assuming the rushed ending was to set up for that. The author says she has no plans for one. Then why did you hint at something going on between Jake and Anne? And what about Chris/Anne/Ellie? And Jade's family moving? What ended up with that? Unfinished and sloppy.

Dave Ferguson continues his great writing (this time with Warren Bird) on clear, practical steps on how to grow a church/people that make disciples...that make disciples....that make disciples....you get the idea? This book is all about MOVEMENT, MULTIPLICATION, thoroughly based in the person, story, and example of Jesus. I am the man that I am because of some spiritual hero's that invested their lives in me (flawed man that I still am)...but that investment has put me on a lifetime journey of being a HERO MAKER in each role that God has placed me. I am thankful that Dave continues to voice/write so beautifully some of the things in my heart that I simply am not gifted to say as clearly and concisely as he does. This is all done with GREAT research and context for use TODAY! I urge anyone wanting to make a difference, to create a movement, to be a person who leaves a LONG LEGACY of faithful disciples of Jesus to READ this book and then put it in the hands of others who you believe can BE those same HERO MAKERS! May Jesus be made LEGENDARY in all of this!

Thanks Dave & Warren for helping me get to the next level in my leadership thinking. My desire is to be a Hero Maker for the glory of God and the expansion of the Kingdom of Christ!

Dave Ferguson and Exponential have a heart for fulfilling the Great Commission through local multiplying churches. Jesus made it clear that to take the gospel to the ends of the earth we must make disciples that make disciples that make disciples. If you need practical help with disciple-making then READ Hero Maker.Pastor Joby Martin, Lead Pastor, The Church of Eleven22

Heromaker is a leadership user's guide to how Jesus wants to build his church. It's the multiplication mindset of God! You will definitely receive some amazing insights as well as practical applications from this book.

It’s a Great concept. Something we should all practice. It could change the world in no time. Must read for leaders!

The vision behind this book is so compelling- but what I loved most was the practical steps and examples for building a culture of disciple making disciples. I highly recommend this book of any pastor or leader who wants to learn more about playing their part in fulfilling the Great Commission!

Great perspective on building leaders through discipleship. A good reminder that it is not enough just to be a hero, but the call to mentor, train, and equip others to lead.

Excellent book!

I love the landscape format of all Peter Moruzzi's books, as it allows for the full page images to be adequately displayed. This book is well-written and researched. There is enough information for me to find value in the images presented, but not so much that the text outweighs the images themselves. Another triumphant publication!

I ordered this as a gift and was so impressed with what I received. The book is well-organized, interesting, and beautifully done. Makes a great read for any history lovers!

Wonderful pictorial history of Los Angeles. On page 143 I see a small photo with the caption ‘Checking their lPhones in 1952.’ Who knew? :)

Wonderful commentary. Facinating historic ride. Recommended:)

This book is filled with many photos & postcards - and also some posters & brochures - from the first half of the twentieth century, and it's a real treat looking at everything. The colors are good, too.

#360,626 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I thought this was an excellent book. First of all, I enjoyed learning a little bit about Tibetan culture and history. But the story was absolutely phenomenal that the author not only cured himself of gangrene but he was able to "reconstruct" the ankle bone. He did not stop the conventional medicine and it appears that he continued to follow the doctor's prescriptions even after discharge from the hospital but he refused amputation and saved his leg through prayer and meditation. This was a great book to read after "You are the Placebo" by Joe Dispenza.

I have been grateful to receive Phakyab Rinpoche's teachings for many years, and have looked forward each year to the great insights he brings to my life. He is an incredible person, full of joy, empowerment, and humor. From these small group teachings, I've had the opportunity to discuss his past, his life, and tibetan buddhism, and he has always shared himself with such a beautiful accessibility.I have sensed a great depth of knowledge and life experience in him beyond what can be spoken in a few small conversations each year, and this book is the gift I have been hoping for, allowing me a better understanding of his earlier life, his training, and his philosophy. Aside from the lovingly-written profile of Phakyab Rinpoche's life, I have learned a great deal more about Tibetan Buddhism concepts and history in the book as well. Sofia Stril-Rever demonstrates skillful writing talent in bringing Phakyab Rinpoche's story to the world. The knowledge and understanding that Phakyab Rinpoche holds is powerful medicine, and I believe he and Sofia Stril-Rever have taken a great step forward in bringing important concepts and practices of healing, living and philosophy to the world.

I met rinpoche on jackon heights on my way to gym... i asked rinpoche if he is Phakyab Rinpoche and Rinpoche replied "yes" and i told him i'm reading "meditation saved my life" by sofia stril rever and i told him i'm halfway through... rinpoche gave me his number and the meditation center where he resides and said he'll be hojng France soon. Rinpoche is so humble and kind, he told me that the initial days were very hard... i told him my parents were from mustang and Rinpoche replied mustang is so similar like Tibet and that he wishes to go there someday. I replied to rinpoche, "may be we'll visit together some time since i was there just 6 months ago." He is so kind and talked to me like a son. As we were crossing the pedestrian line, rinpoche held me back for the car to stop before we proceeded. His love and compassion struck me deeply...

This man is a living saint. His story could not be more compelling, and his integrity and vulnerability make the mystery of his healing totally believable. I was amazed by his sense of humor and playfulness in the midst of dealing with so much physical suffering. And I was infuriated by the "medical establishment," which discounted what Rinpoche was able to do through self-healing that they were unable to do with all of their surgeries and medications. The translator/co-writer is brilliant, deeply sympathetic, writes wonderful prose. I was totally inspired by this book.

I was deeply touched and inspired to read this. It's a powerful journey, gracefully carrying us through time, and through Tibet...and then through Rinpoche's incredible journey with life-threatening disease and complete healing without western medicine. I am a student of Phakyab Rinpoche. He recently showed me his new running shoes. May we all be inspired to know what is truly possible with a mind of great compassion and clarity! Thank you!!

Total joy to read the autobiography of my teacher Phakyab Rinpoche, whom I had the blessing to meet almost eight years ago in Miami, a wonderful teacher with love and compassion for all beings !. I enjoyed this wonderful book, reading about his courageous journey and exploring the depth of his healing and wisdom !!! Thank you !!!

As a student of Rinpoche's for some years now, I have long respected the grace and humor he has shared. While I thought I had a sense of the depth and breadth of this man, and his mission, this beautiful and powerful book has opened my eyes to a great vista. Not only have I learned more about the man Phakyab Rinpoche, I've come to better understand Buddhism, Tibetan culture, and the very magic of Spirit.

I felt the power of truth emanating from this book. It is filled with truth you will recognize as authentic and inspiring. We all need healing in one form or another and Rinpoches life gives a beautiful example of where healing can be found. Thank you Rinpoche and bless you for illuminating this path.
