Featured Recipe from Vegetable Literacy: Ivory Carrot Soup with a Fine Dice of Orange Carrots Serves 4-6 Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 pound white carrots, scrubbed and thinly sliced 1 tablespoon raw white rice Sea salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 thyme sprig 4 cups water or light chicken stock Few tablespoons finely diced orange carrots and/or other colored carrots Freshly ground pepper About 1 tablespoon minced fine green carrot tops Directions Warm the butter and oil in a soup pot and add the onion, white carrots, rice, 1 teaspoon salt, and the sugar and thyme. Cook over medium heat for several minutes, turning everything occasionally. Add 1 cup of the water, cover, turn down the heat, and cook while you heat the remaining 3 cups water. When the water is hot, add it to the pot, cover, and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. While the soup is cooking, cook the diced carrots in salted boiling water for about 3 minutes and then drain. When ready, let cool slightly, then remove and discard the thyme sprig. Puree the soup until smooth in a blender. Taste for salt and season with the pepper. Reheat if it has cooled. Ladle the soup into bowls, scatter the diced carrots and carrot tops over each serving, and serve. Featured Recipe from Vegetable Literacy: Peas with Baked Ricotta and Bread Crumbs Serves 2 Ingredients Olive oil 1 cup high-quality ricotta cheese, such as hand-dipped full-fat ricotta 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh bread crumbs 4 teaspoons butter 2 large shallots or 1/2 small onion, finely diced (about 1/3 cup) 5 small sage leaves, minced (about 1 1/2 teaspoons) 1 1/2 pounds pod peas, shucked (about 1 cup) Grated zest of 1 lemon Sea salt and freshly ground pepper Chunk of Parmesan cheese, for grating Directions Heat the oven to 375°F. Lightly oil a small baking dish; a round Spanish earthenware dish about 6 inches across is perfect for this amount. If your ricotta is wet and milky, drain it first by putting it in a colander and pressing out the excess liquid. Pack the ricotta into the dish, drizzle a little olive oil over the surface, and bake 20 minutes or until the cheese has begun to set and brown on top. Cover the surface with the bread crumbs and continue to bake until the bread crumbs are browned and crisp, another 10 minutes. (The amount of time it takes for ricotta cheese to bake until set can vary tremendously, so it may well take longer than the times given here, especially if it wasn’t drained.) When the cheese is finished baking, heat the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. When the butter foams, add the shallots and sage and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the peas, 1/2 cup water, and the lemon zest. Simmer until the peas are bright green and tender; the time will vary, but it should be 3 to 5 minutes. Whatever you do, don’t let them turn gray. Season with salt and a little freshly ground pepper, not too much. Divide the ricotta between 2 plates. Spoon the peas over the cheese. Grate some Parmesan over all and enjoy while warm. With Pasta: Cook 1 cup or so pasta shells in boiling, salted water. Drain and toss them with the peas, cooked as above, and then with the ricotta. The peas nestle in the pasta, like little green pearls.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Committed vegetarians will cheer over another book from the hands of Madison. One of the nation’s best-known vegetarian cooks, Madison has practiced her craft both at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse and her own restaurant. Comprehensive and exhaustive, this new cookbook surveys the world of edible plant products in rigorous scientific groupings. Both text and color photographs educate readers to discover correlations and kinships and to explore how recipes adapt to encompass related ingredients. All of the nightshade family—eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers—appear together. A sandwich of spinach, caramelized onions, and roasted peppers neighbors a sort of casserole assembled from little-known quelites (lamb’s quarters) and mushrooms layered with corn tortillas. Madison introduces even more curious vegetables, such as fourwing saltbush. Although most recipes fall into the vegan category, there are plenty of dairy products and eggs to broaden recipes’ appeal. Madison herself confesses partiality to tomatoes baked in cream. A necessary addition for both reference and circulating collections. --Mark Knoblauch

If you have created a vegetable garden, and worked it even just one year or worked it more years than you care to count, you will be hooked on this book by the second page of the introduction. It contains a wealth of information; so much information, that you should not wait for your local library to get a copy: You need it NOW, and you will refer to it way too often to have to rely on the library's copy. If you are considering putting in your first vegetable garden, or if you often buy from a farmers' market or a local produce stand, you need to order this book, too. You will love it and, not only will you cook its recipes; you will be able to create your own favorites from all the tips included. If you buy your produce from the grocery store, you will find a lot of great recipes and a lot of information on unfamiliar edible plants, grains, grasses, herbs, beans and vegetables. But (I'd roughly estimate that) a fifth of the information provided will not be of value to the grocery-store-buyer, since the book provides information on varieties available and how to make use of all parts of the plant: From seedlings that you weed out, to leaf tops of edible roots, to roots of edible tops, to bolted stems and flowers, etc. In other words, parts of the plant that grocery-store-buyers don't often see. But, I'd bet good money that anyone who reads this book and doesn't have a garden, will be hurriedly searching for a sunny piece of earth in which to pitch a shovel!I won't go into the great information that you can find by reading this product page on Amazon. Definitely take advantage of the "Look Inside" feature. And definitely take a look at Deborah Madison's other published books. I find it a waste of space to list chapters and covered topics and ingredients in a review when it's all there in the "Look Inside".Deborah Madison has been writing quality cook books for ages. It was her book Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone that helped me convince the men in my family that they were not going to die if there wasn't meat on the dinner plate (that was back in the 1990s). But the point I'm trying to make is this: Madison has vast experience with veggies, grains, grasses, herbs, and beans. She has the necessary expertise, writing style and refined taste buds to put together a valuable and worthwhile cook book. What may not be obvious by browsing through the Contents and Index pages:--Besides the main star ingredient, other ingredients that flavor the recipes are not hard to locate. They are not necessarily limited to everyday ingredients with which we are all familiar: For instance, if you don't already know ghee and miso paste, you will be introduced to it in some of these recipes.--For most of the plants, you will find what I call a "food thesaurus" listing or section; "good companions" is what Madison calls them. You will have to remember those "companions" yourself, because they are not listed in the index.--You won't find recipes where the featured vegetable is NOT the primary flavor. In other words, you won't find chicken, salmon, sausage recipes with accompanying veggies and herbs or sauces made of the highlighted veggie or herb. You might find fish and meats mentioned in the "Good Companions" listed, but, again, you won't find them listed in the index.--This is not a vegan book: There are eggs, butter, cream and such. Actually, there are some very nice egg recipes. We've tried the egg salad with tarragon (I used Mexican tarragon, because that's what grows in my Southern garden and eggs from our own hens.)--This is NOT a how-to-garden book. Although it does list some seed recommendations.--This is NOT a book that is slanted towards where Madison lives and gardens in New Mexico. Meaning, you will not find information that is inappropriate for your area. (I think that is a great accomplishment on Madison's part: That she was able to make the book very personable, but still refrain from giving us information--stated as fact--that is unsuitable or different for the various parts of the U.S. (For instance, I must plant my summer squash and tomatoes in early March. My zukes are finished in June and my tomatoes are over in July. Your tomatoes may last until the first frost.) It is a pet peeve of mine that so many vegetable gardening cookbooks assume I have tomatoes in August...--Cooking techniques are explained. And many, many techniques are employed: Steaming, sauteing, roasting, baking, grilling, braising and pressure cooking. If there are recipes for breaded and fried veggies, I don't remember seeing them. (Thank you for that!!!)--There are so many fantastic and helpful tips: How about this one? The extra-long stem on an artichoke is meant to be used: Peel, slice, drop in acidulated water, then braise, saute, or toss them into a soup.-- The simplicity of the recipes that forces the focus onto a specific vegetable, sort of reminds me of Tender: A Cook and His Vegetable Patch by Nigel Slater. But I like this book a whole lot better because it is definitely slanted towards American ways, names, places, available ingredients, available seeds and measurements***. (Slater's book, while it is filled with wonderful recipes and ideas, is slanted towards a British audience.)--***There is an adequate conversion chart of measurements at the very end of the book. Being on the last page, it is very easy to flip to. (It's a bit hard to read: Green ink and not a large type point size.)--Unlike the two books by Lawson, this book does NOT have many photographs, as it is meant to be a wealth of information, not just pretty pictures to look at. (I think it could have used some more pictures, though. But then the book would have weighed a ton.) It is definitely not a coffee table book.--There are many soup recipes--and that is important in our family. There are all kinds of salads, side dishes, and main dishes. Best of all: I'm very happy to see there are hardly any pasta recipes. They seem to be a dime a dozen these days...--We've become fans of quite a lot of Asian greens lately--they do so well in our gardens; and of course some are mentioned in this book--bok choy and Chinese broccoli and perilla (shiso) to mention a few, but I will still be referring to my favorite Asian cook books (and the Kitazawa Seed catalog) for most of them.I've only had this book a short few days, but we've already sampled several recipes. We cook from our garden, so I was kind of limited in the recipes I could choose from--it being mid-March in the Coastal Plains of Texas. But follows is a list of what I created so far, and the recipes have worked and so have the flavor combinations: Grilled Onions with Cinnamon Butter (using the first of the 1015 Texas Onions from down in the Valley); Braised Parsley Root (with the last from the garden--had to get them out to make room for two very special cherry tomatoes, both originating from further down south); Chard Soup with Cumin, Cilantro and Lime; and to use up two lonely rutabagas, I combined ideas from the Winter Stew of Braised Rutabagas Carrots, Potatoes and Parsley, and Rutabaga Soup with Gorgonzola Toasts.I'm really looking forward to trying almost all the recipes in this book. And, much to my delight, we've got quite a few of those mentioned in this book already planted in our garden.

This book is wonderful. I like that it gives the Latin names of all the vegetables and a bit of useful information about each of the vegetable families. It covers a lot of obscure vegetables that you find at a farmer's market or ethnic grocery store and find yourself wondering what they are and what to do with them. I liked this book so much I gave my first copy away as a Christmas present, and then decided I would try out the Kindle version as a replacement. I think I preferred the hard copy, because this is the sort of book that you're going to want to flip around in, and I find it annoying to try to "flip around" in ebooks. Kindle seems more convenient for the kinds of books that you read straight through. I suppose it is convenient that I can pull up a recipe on my iPad and consult it in the kitchen without having to worry about getting the book dirty. But so far I've used this book more for reading about the vegetables themselves than as a cooking manual, so in the long run I kind of wish I had purchased another hard copy.

My jam-packed cookbook shelves already held four Deborah Madison cookbooks, and I figured that was enough. But the lure of the vegetable info hooked the gardener in me. I started reading Vegetable Literacy as a book, but quickly took it from coffee table to kitchen, and have been cooking from it all summer and into the fall. We tend to eat vegetarian with fish, seafood, or meat a few times per week, and the recipes complement that style of eating very well. The recipes are relatively simple, clearly written, and very tasty. I've tried new ingredients--tempeh, coconut butter, and black quinoa come to mind. I've learned new techniques--for example, presoaking lentils and adding salt to beans at the start of cooking, which has done wonders for my black beans. Some of my new go-to recipes from this book are the basic lentil recipe, Rio Zape Beans with salt-roasted tomatoes (can sub black beans), pan-fried tempeh with trimmings, which I serve with salsa and lettuce leaf wrappers, roasted asparagus with chopped egg, griddled eggplant rounds, and heirloom tomato quinoa soup. I've tried many others and enjoyed all.I noticed another review that complained about lack of depth in the information on vegetables. I'd say this is a cookbook that gives extra insight into ingredients and a few tips on vegetable gardening. For a book that focusses on in-depth nutritional information on vegetables, I like "Eating on the Wild Side".

When you are looking for quick inspiration for tonight's supper you can leave this on the shelf, but if you are looking to immerse yourself in a culinary heaven then this is definitely the book to turn to.Well written, beautifully presented and with something to catch your attention on every page, humble vegetables are transformed into tantalising gems of information and inspiration.A wide variety of recipes, some old favorites given a new twist, some new and surprising uses of herbs and vegetables, provide an endless source of inspiration. This is definitely a book that I will turn to repeatedly.

My husband had 1 years ago that was larger. This is a smaller compact version that he keeps in his truck or box. If has soooo many helpful geometry cheats!! If you are in the pipeline/tank industry this book is a must!!!

There is a lot of useful information in this book. I highly recommend it if you are in the welding profession. They have pipe take-offs, offsets, orange peeling of pipe, and fish mouthing of pipe information. The information is a little tricky to read at times- some of the tables force you to back and forth between the tables to be able to read them. If you know what you are looking for, you can find it in this book.

Great handy book. I purchased this to replace my old book if you do a lot of fabrication this is a very helpful resource.

Almost all the pages arent glued/sowed on correctly on the bottom portion of the book so I cant open it all the way.

Everyone need to have this book in your toolbox. It is very helpful.

On Accident: Episodes in Architecture and Landscape (Writing Architecture), by Edward Eigen

Review

With great wit and extraordinary knowledge―skillfully supported by writing that makes us pay nothing yet delivers everything―this book guides us into the rich subject of accident and anecdote as forms of historical criticism. Riveting accounts of landscapes, architectures, and the thickness of life bring the central epistemological dilemmas of our time into exquisite relief. A brilliant book.―Catherine Ingraham, Professor of Architecture, Pratt Institute; author of Architecture and the Burdens of LinearityThe owl of Minerva flies at dusk. Blam! Blam! Silence. The little soft-bodied creatures are safe again. Edward Eigen has written a book of crepuscular erudition, architectural history as would have been dreamed by the Lovecraftian lovechild of Edward Gorey, Laurence Sterne, and Jules Verne. It is baroque, wry, pessimistic, mannered, manorial, and seems to have all the time in the world. I have no idea what the world we are entering will make of it, but I am glad it has been published, since it can perhaps function as an idiosyncratic time capsule: this is what it was like to have a beautiful mind on the watershed of the twenty-first century.―D. Graham Burnett, Professor of History and History of Science, Princeton University; coauthor of Keywords:...Relevant to Academic Life, &c.

Chocolate and Zucchini: Daily Adventures in a Parisian Kitchen, by Clotilde Dusoulier

From Publishers Weekly

Readers of Dusoulier's ebullient food blog, chocolateandzucchini.com, won't be disappointed by this wonderful mélange of new creations and old favorites. Dusoulier's charm lies in her culinary curiosity and enthusiasm, and she deftly conveys both through 75-plus recipes and narrative commentary. The 27-year-old Parisian arranges her book into three sections. The first, Simplicité (Simplicity), includes salads, sandwiches, savory tarts, soups and eggs. Part two is Invitation (Entertaining) and features recipes for hors d'oeuvres, "impromptu" dinners like Hand-Cut Steak Tartare, dinner party fare such as Comté Cheese Soufflés, buffet items and sides. The final portion concerns sweets, clearly Dusoulier's favorite. With scintillating recipes for cakes (Apricot and Pistachio Ricotta), tarts (Blueberry Amandine), desserts (Chocolate Hibiscus Crème Brûlée) and "sweet bites" (Orange Flower Shuttle Cookies), this section brims with innovation. Overall, newcomers to French cuisine will learn to make some classics, like Pistou Soup and Beef Bourguignon, while those seeking to expand their repertoires will enjoy the author's idiosyncratic creations. Dishes like Broccoli and Apple Quiche (born out of a "greenmarket run one fall morning") and, of course, Chocolate & Zucchini Cake (which may sound "a little odd," but is "surprisingly successful" and features "real teamwork at play") are just some of Dusoulier's delightful and unusual offerings. love Clotilde's blog so I bought her book. I love her whimsical appproach and great recipes. one day I will go to France!

I read this cover to cover, and want to make almost everything! My husband is a chef and he makes the chocolate raspberry cake for work and everyone loves it.

I stumbled on Clotilde's blog several years ago and think it one of the best food blogs going. Given her talent, taste, and wit I knew a book by her would be good, but this is very good. The book is a small format paperback, which is designed fairly well. My only hesitation on the format is the irritating layout with recipes being run on. That is, a recipe can start at the bottom of a page requiring the reading to have to turn the page to follow. Publishers do this to save space thus money. It is just a no-no for cookbooks in my opinion. The Foreword (which is really an introduction) is written in a breezy and delightful style. Clotilde's charming and infectious personality shines through. The photographs are inspiring, although I wish that she had included one or two of her kitchen. The recipes are very good--simple and interesting. There are some chestnuts with a slight twist. For example, Boeuf Bourguignon with chocolate. The recipes are well written and clear. This is a book one could easily cook their way through. And I do not think that can be said of many cookbooks. Granted, it is a small book, but I did not find one clunker in the bunch. This woman can write. She has found her voice and a delightful one it is. Much thought and care has gone into the recipe introductions. This is not padding but inspiration to those reading this book to actually move into the kitchen and start cooking. Bravo, Clotilde.Anne Bourget

I was brought up in the kitchen and watching Julia Child and used Moosewood cookbooks and lots of ethnic cookbooks. I love Clotilde's Chocolate & Zucchini a lot and have read it through like a book! I haven't been able to do the wine pairings though...no source for the wines. It's a small book without the stay-open features of a regular cookbook but the binding has held up despite lots of back foldings to keep it open. Great pics of the final results fill the book. I've had great success with all the recipes. The oeuf cocotte is a great way to start a holiday morning; I served the Olive Tapenade at a party and everyone loved it...(and these were mid-westerners). Ditto the Gougères au cumin and Pistachio pesto. I took her advice about a dinner party and made the Mustard Chicken Stew and it disappeared. The desserts are great (savory and not overly sweet). Pain d'épice, Yogurt cake, Crème Brulée with hibiscus (be careful not to boil the milk and cream at all or it will curdle). The Mango Ricotta with Macadamia Crunch I served at a dinner party is still being raved about...so enjoy, enjoy! I bought some lavender and am looking forward to making the apricot compote...

This book has so much going on - you'll be shocked at its little size after reading all the reviews. I was disappointed at first. But I picked it up and started reading and, well to be honest I can't remember the last time I read a cookbook cover to cover.Part memoir, part cookbook, part shopping guide, part entertaining guide, and part inspiration comes together in what is probably one of the few books I'll keep out this year. Most of my cookbooks, and there are many, are relegated to a series of cupboards near my desk since it is the only place with room in this small apartment. Chocolate and Zucchini can stay in the kitchen :) The recipes are varied and cover every course including breakfast. There are vegetarian and meat dishes. Most dishes require few ingredients and there aren't any on my "to cook" list that require staples too exotic for my kitchen.Long story short: there is something for nearly everyone in this fun and approachable book.

Enjoy reading blog entries by this author. Reading cookbooks is a great pleasure. This one is delightful. Some excellent ideas and recipes. Especially fun for those of us who have been to Paris.

I absolutely love this book! The author's writing is down-to-earth and fun and her stories are charming. I have tried several of the recipes and they are all very easy to follow and the results have received rave reviews! I highly recommend this to anyone wanting a French flair to their cooking - or just wanting to cook some super-delicious meals!

Super helpful and funny. My wife read the entire thing in a week, and she is busy as can be!

People conflict their own bias with the goal of this book. The goal of this book is to teach all the beginner's level knowledge in politics. It's the same as taking a level 1 or 2 politics course in college. Obviously doesn't get too into depth, but that's not what it's meant to do. 1 star reviews against the information in the book is generally due to a fervorous idealogy. People need to keep their personal political preferences in check when submitting reviews.

As a Ph.D. in political science who formerly taught this subject at the college level, I was eager to see how the entire spectrum of political thought over the ages would be covered in a single volume. The effort in itself is admirable. Making this type of knowledge accessible to a popular audience is challenging, in more ways than one. Being interesting, concise and accurate all at the same time is certainly not easy. And it is inevitable that the process of selecting which information to present and how to present it will subject any such collection to criticism.A close look at many of the entries does indeed reveal some rough spots, to say the least. And the ideas are not always as easy to understand as they are clearly intended to be. Typographical errors and vocabulary issues also detract from the presentation.Though it wouldn’t be appropriate to consider this book any kind of definitive reference work, however, it can certainly serve the very positive purpose of exposing readers to a wide array of ideas and whetting their appetite for more detailed treatments. At the same time, I was positively impressed with the effort made to include various viewpoints and cultural perspectives. Certainly the nine UK-based contributors are entitled to an A for effort.Daniel K. Berman, Ph.D., Amazon authorThe Newest Story of O: How to Legally Pay 0% Interest on the Money You Owe & Eliminate Your Debt in a Fraction of the Time—Secrets to Making the Credit System Work in Your Favor

I hate to admit that I'm learning more from these books then I did when I went to school. In not the brightest man but these books make it clear who, what, when, where, and why politics and political change took place

You don't have to be a political Science student to love this book. it gives a succinct description of every political philosophy from Plato to present. this is a great volume for clarifying your own political positions as well as seeing the vast landscape of ideas that are never discussed in school or university. The book describes the human search for ideas that keep us from being beasts, yet at the same time keep the lights on and the water running.

My son loves it!! I love these books by DK publishing because they are perfect for inquisitive minds. We are trying to collect them all!

If you have read any other of the books from this series and liked them- you won't be disappointed in this book. Clear explanations, many subjects cover, and I didn't detect any "political bias" to the best of my knowledge.

Great Coffee Table Book, it's a fun 'intro to topic' book but like just about any textbook has a few errors so I wouldn't suggest for heavy learning purposes, but on the flip side they make the subject matter fun for novices (children, etc.)

With all of the names of different political systems being spoken of in the media, this book explains them all.

This book reminds me of those "learn to draw" books where the steps go something like:1. First, draw a medium oval.2. Then, faintly trace a horizontal line through the center.3. Finally, add in the details to complete your drawing of the Sistine Chapel.Yes the pictures are beautiful but it's not exactly useful when I want to learn to made a radish bird and the book is essentially just saying "Start by cutting a radish into a bird-like shape. Then, whittle it down until it looks like a bird."

The literature for food carving and garnish design is limited relative to other aspects of the culinary arts. While this "visual manual" is helpful, the descriptions would benefit from less brevity and more detail. I was left to experiment to discover the boundary conditions and specifics for certain procedures. For example, when instructed to cut a 4 in. long strip of carrot, how thick should the strip be to maximize results? The book doesn't say and I was forced to experiment on my own. In case you're curious, my results were that while the form of thinner strips of vegetables are easier to manipulate, they hold their shape less well than thicker pieces do.

The inside of the book lives up to the promise of the cover. Beautiful quality paper and photographs. Detailed instructions on how to make these beautiful carvings. If this is what you want to do, this book is an excellent reference, and is a visual pleasure.

This book is good if you are looking for a time consuming project to up a dish at a kids party or a theme gathering. While the step by step instructions are easy to follow, there is little explanation with regards to the sharpness of blades, dimensions of bladed needed or the pressure required to complete the cut. Not bad, just not what I was looking for

I love this book. Fully illustrated, with most of the space used for multiple color inserts on every page. Each step is artfully detailed. This book is basic. Each suggestion is practical. Garnishes made from cucumbers, daikon, red radish, lemon, grapefruit, papaya and more. From simple thin tied carrot knots, to a melon carved bird basket. From elaborate eggplant traps to apple cages.i rarely become so excited with a new book. It doesn't take long to read because it's barely a hundred pages of mostly pictures. Published less then a year ago, and being only 8" x 10", it will still make a great coffee table book. I can't wait to try the zucchini net: a great alternative to nori rolls or wrapping in lettuce.Easily adaptable to an all raw food menu, I will certainly use some of these in my food presentations. I heartily recommend this book. And at this price, it's a worthwhile indulgence.

Great directions for cutting all sort of beautiful garnishes for your dishes. The ribboning technique will take lots of practice though.

I purchased this book for my employer, a neurosurgeon, he absolutely loved it.

Beautiful book. Can't wait to put it in action

This could have been a feature article in a magazine with the test at the end, but it's a book with so much fluff that I ended up scanning a lot of it. Anyway, the idea of the "love languages" I believe has a lot of truth. I'm glad I read this book and I suppose if it will save some marriages it's worth going through the fluff.

The book was pretty good, it had some valid points and learning that there are different ways that people express their love was important. What I think pulled away from the book was the underlying religious agenda to preach about God. It totally turned me off And I thought it was completely unnecessary to deliver the message. Of course if you are a religious person then this would be right up your alley.

I stopped reading at the part where the author recommended a woman to sleep with her husband against her will. WTF? Highly triggering for sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors. Also, the book reads like it’s written for white Christians. And for men who don’t want a partnership, but rather want to coerce their wife into being their sexually subservient housemaid/servant because they just don’t like vacuuming and can‘t afford hiring a cleaner („I thought I get myself a wife for that“).So if you’re a white Christian man or woman who likes to be a little housewife, yes, this book‘s for you.Besides that, the book offers solid scientific facts such as man‘s sex drive being dominated biologically by sperm pressure; that women‘s sex drive is purely emotional and not driven by their bodies; and more.

I have just started to read this book. In the Acknowledgments, I noticed this, "If all wives loved as she does, fewer men would be looking over the fence." How about "If all husbands loved as he does, fewer women would be looking over the fence."? I am serious.

It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.

I was once asked to read this book by the only person in the world I love.....I refused. At the time I figured it to be some shrinks opinion on how we should all be in our relationships....what the hell does he know I thought.....what if he is wrong and my future wife bases our whole future on just what he says.....I imagined this book to be some guy with opinions on how to fix problems that he knows nothing about because he doesn't know "us". It's not a good feeling as a man to agree to read a book on relationships because you feel like you're putting everything into the authors hands.....and what if he "doesn't understand" or what if the advice doesn't apply to us.....what if it makes things worse between us because he advises things we don't believe in.....no....I'm not reading that I told her.I thought no matter what we would always figure each other out and we would be ok......I didn't see being asked to read this book , was a cry out from the woman I love hitting a boiling point and her attempt to communicate to me in a different way......the same things she's been trying to for a long time.....Being close minded that day costed me so much regret and misery....I used to wake up to the most beautiful smile in the world and now I don't....I recently ended up reading this book and I couldn't put it down....sounds crazy but it's true. Instead of being some guys opinions or......typical shrink talk that in no way could apply to each specific relationship.......I found it to be a book that opens up the mind to the understanding of love.....and how it is not this one universal "language" we all feel we should be the same with.....I once told her...."nobody taught me how to love, I'm growing....learning".....I pleased with her to understand I love her.......we simply didn't have an understanding of how and why we didnt approach love the exact same way as each other.....only makes sense that it should be the same right? You bicker and argue and it drives you crazy......why doesn't she understand you think.......the book is not an excuse to use or justify a true bad relationship let me add.....but it truly answers so many questions.....it is really a language of love. Once understood, this book leaves you feeling like a fool and only wanting to apply so much of what you've now learned to your future together. It takes away the work of trying to understand the things that at the time make no sense.....and allows you to focus on what's important....loving instead of wasting precious time. Read it carefully and I recommend reading it together.....I didn't get that chance but I can guarantee reading this book with who you love will allow you both to stop frequently throughout the pages and talk, learn, smile, probably cry.....but then go on to a much happier fulfilling life together once the book is closed. It can save so much if you only let it.*Update 12-1-17I drive a bus so I have nothing but time to think as I look out the window and look up at the sky looking around me. You would probably think of screaming kids and noise but for me it is driving in my own little world and using time to think about lifeI am a trainer so I spend my time trying to help people learn how to maintain their body and prevent problems. And the funny thing is that it is are very choices of what we do to our own bodies that I am teaching to have to change. All of our problems nutritionally and physically and even mentally come down too poor choice and repetitive habits that we know we need to change but never do until it's too late. Every single person reading this can relate to thatMy point about what I do is that I spend a lot of time trying to fix my body because professionals out there either won't take the time to do it or I don't have the money to spend on who is needed. I have spent countless months doing stretches and exercises and what I have found is a lot of times I'm doing the exact same stretches and exercises that don't seem to be working. Soooo......why not do different ones then right...... what a lot of reasons it may feel good, you may not know any other stretches or exercises, you may simply believe that if I just do it one more time again tomorrow....THAT it will finally help..... you just believe in that stretch so much that in your mind you just say I'll keep trying. You are maybe even making things worse by this but you're honest to God intentions are to completely cure one of the biggest problems in your life, pain...... I think you see where I'm getting at.Getting a little long for whoever is reading but there is a lot of meaning here that can help who knows thousands of people as long as this review remains online......I will just end it like this..... last night I took a stretch that I have been doing for over 2 years and I changed it in a slightly different way....... a lot of the pain I normally get daily is gone.......just to put a spotlight on that sentence .....I'm saying that what I had been doing for so long..... trying to cure one of the biggest problems in my life that hadnt been working............that I continued doing........ believing in and depending on.... to be my much needed answer.......It wasn't until I allowed the idea of the same stretch applied in a different way, that I ALLOWED life to be better for me.I did not say this stretch doesn't matter anymore and say forget it to never exist again.....no, I used it to COMMUNICATE with my body in the same exact physical form....just different language from mind to body....because I always believed in it.Belief can be amazing and help you....it also can be your own worst enemy when refuse to change your ways.....lots of time I lost believing my way instead of another.....all while would have given anything to accomplish my goal......once again I stood in my own way......but I didn't give up.....otherwise pain would still be here and I wouldn't have came on here to add all these thoughts. You have to go into the book with an open mind because if you do it with the mindset of wanting it to say what it is that you want to hear.....then you can never let the life-changing words happen.......you're learning a language as you read...not what's right and wrong but what was being lost in life.Keep in mind this is a book about the language of love so if you think about when you go to school to learn a different language...you are taking the difficult step of taking time there in order to understand.....be able to take what you understand and apply it.....and be able to communicate in a NEEDED way once you learn....AND THEN USE......communicate and UNDERSTAND eachother.Just think how you feel when you meet somebody and you want to communicate but you can't and you get frustrated. you are trying to figure out what you want the other person to know and they're trying to tell or show you..... it becomes stressful and sometimes you end up walking away from each other never knowing the real meaning that was right there between the two of you. When you are able to speak the same language this simply does not happen.....The same two people if we're able to learn the same language, could come back in front of one another again and.....just imagine......imagine the possibilities with that communication.......so much never lost again. The exact same message and the exact same feelings that were always there, except now instead of the stress of not understanding, there is the excitement for anything to be possible just by coming together and understanding.....The power of language is amazing........think of when you meet somebody and they're able to speak five or six different languages, you are in awe and wish you could do it.well imagine being able to speak the one language in life that is the most unexplainable, powerful language and meaning of life, love....I would also like to mention the fact that if these two people sat down and learn each other's languages together how helpful that is.....and how much easier it is to be able to learn how to communicate with the exact person that you're trying to ........spending time helping each other learn different languages.......TOGETHER.Bus is parked.
