This was a reread for me, and I found it just as bizarre and incomprehensible and fantastic as I did the first time around. I can't explain what makes it a 5 star read for me. I know a lot of readers disagree--it appears to be a book one either loves or hates.For those that haven't read it, Slaughterhouse Five tells the story of Billy Pilgrim, "unstuck in time", who lived an ordinary life except for witnessing the bombing of Dresden during WWII, and being kidnapped by aliens from the planet Tralfamador. Like Billy, the narrative jumps from point to point in his life, never in the right order, always returning to his WWII experience. It is full of philosophy--but does Vonnegut believe any of it, or is he just playing with the reader?Vonnegut was himself, as prisoner in Slaughterhouse Five, a witness to that bombing. Is he the intrusive narrator of the book, the one who says "that was me" and "I was there" about certain events? That is one of the great questions the book poses, and, for me, it gives an extra layer of enjoyment to the novel.Despite the choppy narrative, the strange story, and the feeling that the reader is being played with, I find Slaughterhouse Five to be an engrossing, compelling, fascinating read. I don't recommend it universally, though, as it's earthiness and weirdness will put off many readers.

I remember reading this in American Literature class, and I always wanted to come back to it because it's just one of those books that I don't think reading it once will suffice. There's obviously a lot more going on there than initially meets the eye.There's the obvious story, which is about Billy Pilgrim, a veteran and optometrist who is seemingly suffering from some sort of mental illness like PTSD from his time in the war, and also some sort of possible brain damage suffered from an airplane crash. These elements compound each other and Billy finds himself traveling through time to different points in his life; during his time in World War II, during his time with his wife Valencia, on a planet inhabited by the Tralfamadorians (who have him locked up as a human zoo exhibit), and a few others.But then there is the author's underlying messages, one of which is about the utter senselessness of war. The Germans are making candles out of the Jews while Americans are melting German teenagers and we all know that the Soviets were starving tens of millions of their own while fighting the Germans. It's just a vicious cycle of death and evil.The other message is a philosophical one. There's a very strong sense that there is no free will and there is also a sense of nihilism that no matter what we do, the outcomes are fixed, and the future unchanging.I hope that the philosophical message isn't a correct one. I tend to side with those who believe strongly that we are in control of our fates and that no matter how dire the circumstances, we have the choice to make things a little bit better. Ironically I think Vonnegut has done exactly that with his book. He has made an impact with this book by bringing awareness to the evils of war.Read the book. It's a good one.

I know this a oldie but goodie book - but somehow I missed it all these years. Interesting reading it 50 years after it was published. It has passed the test of time. It is oddly engaging and unpredictable and just plain weird. This type of work can not be copied because it so utterly original. I can see how it was shocking in 1967 and was ultimately banned by some schools. Funny how that insured it would get the attention it deserved. This book retells the narrative of the WWII by someone who was there. Like all wars, I assume, there is absurdity, contradictions, unknown heros, small and big people that no one ever hears about. I have read a lot of books, fiction and non-fiction, about WWII and this book provided a colorful dynamic addition to all the thousands and thousands of books written on this subject. Where are all the Kurt Vonnegut's today? We need you so desperately.

My high school English teacher gave me this book with the caution, Don't tell anyone I gave this to you. Guess I let her down here. A classic read and perhaps the one you want to start with when reading Vonnegut. Cat's Cradle is the only book in his bibliography that rivals this one. Restless and prodding writing that will make you laugh out loud and shake your head at the same time.

I didn’t know what to expect from this book, I had never read Vonnegut before and truly didn't know what this book would be like, I had high expectations, though. I’ve read great praise for this book and it was frequently recommended to me. Normally I try to avoid having high expectations for authors I don’t know because I’m usually disappointed. This was certainly an exception.This is a quite unique book. A kind of Sci-fi that I hadn’t read before but that I really liked. Vonnegut does an excellent job mixing history with war criticism and science fiction. It seemed to me an odd combination that didn’t appeal to me at first. It’s probably because of this unlikely combination that this book is so peculiar.It was a hard reading when I started (maybe I wasn’t in the proper mood) but then it flowed quite easy, the story absorbed me. The main character is pretty interesting: a time traveler and yet, quite a normal American. A soldier, and optometrist and a time traveler. Not the best soldier, a well-known optometrist by chance and average in every aspect but for time travel, and the fact that he was abducted by aliens. Maybe the fact that he is quite a normal guy makes relatable a tale so unrelatable.This is a Sci-fi book yes, but I think that, more importantly this is a book about war. This book tries to portray war from the perspective of a soldier who survived and how he experienced all the horrors of war. This book reminded me slightly of Johnny Got His Gun . War is a terrible thing, and those who pay the ultimate price are young naïve soldiers and innocent victims.

I believe any IT professional will find these series very relevant for interview purposes towards getting the job both by the interviewer and the interviewee.

Only book in market for Oracle database administration interview questions. Had to buy it without a choice, bought with some expectation as it showed 5 stars over two reviews. Must say, the content lived upto my expectations. Only downer I thought was, the HR questions are common in some of the books. If you ignore that part, overall suits what it is meant to be.

As I write this, we have in the past few days gotten pictures of Pluto from the flyby of the New Horizons satellite. They are wonderful, but by now such detailed pictures of distant worlds are fairly commonplace. We used to explore space merely with earth-bound telescopes, and there was a time when even the telescope was a new invention. Telescopes were a sensation in seventeenth-century Europe; think how astonishing it must have been to have had a device that made distant objects look close! Such gadgets had extraordinary military potential, and all the kings wanted them. Galileo, however, took the telescope to the heavens, and changed history. How he did so is the story of Galileo’s Telescope: A European Story (Harvard University Press) by Massimo Bucciantini, Michele Camerota, and Franco Giudice, translated by Catherine Bolton. The authors are all professors of the history of science, and have here traced the invention of the telescope and the roundabout ways that Galileo got his observations published, promoted, and accepted by many thinkers (although there was that little problem of their contradicting the Bible). The authors say they are telling a crime story, of how Galileo robbed us of our beliefs that the Earth was central to everything; that’s a fine way to describe how dramatic were the changes related here.The idea of using a combination of lenses to make things seem closer had been around for a while, but the glass wasn’t fully transparent and the grinding of lenses was crude. Galileo didn’t invent the telescope, but he so improved it that many people think he did. What did Galileo get to see? First, he saw the surface of our Moon, and realized that it had mountains and valleys something like our own planet, and it was not the sort of perfect orb the heavens were supposed to contain. The Sun was no more perfect than the Moon, but changeable in that it had spots that played across its surface. The planets like Venus and Jupiter could be seen to be illuminated by the Sun, showing phases just as the Moon showed; they were all just spheres in orbit. When he looked at Jupiter, Galileo saw three (later confirmed to be four) moons. The discovery of Jupiter’s moons was to be a special blow against the universe as Earth-centered; those moons were going around with another planet at their center, and there was no reason to think anymore that everything went around the Earth. Galileo was quick to publish his discoveries; just two years after Lipperhey produced his lens tube Galileo published Sidereus Nuncius, and it caused a sensation. People didn’t even have to read Latin, or even read at all, to appreciate it. It was not the first illustrated book, but its words were there to discuss the images, and the images were such as had not previously been seen. There were engravings of Galileo’s watercolors of the Moon, a view of how many more stars were held in the Pleiades than anyone had ever suspected, and a chronological view of the movements of the moons around Jupiter.The authors show how Galileo not only made the discoveries, and published them, but set out on a traveling campaign to defend them. Some scholars, even the Christian ones, were excited by the new view of the cosmos. Others, like Bonifacio Vannozzi of Pistoia, a papal court secretary, wrote, “To say that the Moon is earthlike, with valleys and hills, is as if to say that there are flocks that graze there and cowherds who cultivate it. We must stand by the Church, which is the enemy of anything new, according to the teachings of St. Paul.” The findings of the telescope were so repulsive that some said they were merely optical illusions or hallucinations. The most famous part of Galileo’s story, of how he was convicted of heresy in 1633 and was kept under house arrest until he died nine years later, is not covered here. Instead, here is the clear but complicated narrative of what Galileo had done with his singular device. “His discoveries seemed endless,” the authors write, “... the havoc he was wreaking could not have been more devastating.”

As someone interested in the history of science, I found this an enthralling book, providing detailed insights to how Galileo modified the Dutch spyglass, made his seminal observations, and subsequently persuaded his peers of what he saw and their significance. The description of how news of his findings spread -- through Europe and then to the East were very informative. At a time when evidence for human causation of climate change is challenged, the resistance to Galileo's findings has a very modern ring. I wish that the authors had also mentioned Simon Marius, whose work was contemporaneous with Galileo, and who named the moons of Jupiter that have endured (e.g., Ganymede). But Galileo's interactions with Kepler and other contemporaries are well described. Also useful, as a postscript, is the account of how Galileo deliberately pressed the Vatican's button -- which got him into trouble -- but thank goodness that he did! Highly recommended

Fifteenth century Italy was a world of rival principalities and scheming for advancement in courts. Science, such as it was, was practiced by a few people in the ducal courts and colleges for the glorification of their patrons, under the watchful eye of the catholic church. Galileo was Head Professor of Mathematics at the University in Padua when the “spyglass”, or telescope, was invented, apparently first by Hans Lipperhey of the Hague in 1608, and slightly later the same year by Jacob Metius, both Dutch spectacle-makers. Galileo, apparently a talented craftsman, immediately devoted himself to perfecting the instrument (increasing magnification from X3 to X20 within a year) and turning his new instruments upon the heavens. He found that the surface of the moon was irregular and mountainous, rather than smooth as thought by the ancients and prescribed by church dogma, that Jupiter had four planets (moons) revolving about it, that the milky way was actually composed of millions of stars, etc., all of which he quickly published in Siderus nunciusThe reaction to Siderus nuncius in the courts and colleges of Europe was vigorous and immediate. Some of Galileo’s colleagues were angered that their contributions to his development of the telescope were not acknowledged. Many astronomers reported failure to observe these phenomena, while others claimed to have already seen them, and some nonentities attacked Galileo as a means of advancing their careers, Galileo’s reaction was to make telescopes and send them to the various important courts in Italy, France and most importantly in Prague, where Johann Kepler, the leading astronomer of the day, was the court astronomer. Galileo carried the day when Kepler published his Dioptrice supporting Galileo’s findings.Galileo continued to devote his energies to improving his telescropes and studying the sky to accumulate observations, many of which supported Copernicus's model of planets revolving about the sun rather than the official church dogma of planets and the sun rotating about the earth. Then Galileo went on the offensive. He secured the position of Chief Mathematician and Astronomer to the Tuscan court of the Medicis at Florence under very favorable terms. Then he immediately set about arranging a trip to Rome to present his work at the Collegio Romano and to the various Cardinals of the church, helping them to view the heavens through his telescopes. He carried the day with the astronomers and mathematicians, who could not refute what they saw with their own eyes. However, for the catholic church there was too much at stake to tolerate such evidence that contradicted the holy scripture of the church. The Inquisition condemned, 70 years after fact, the work of Copernicus positing that the planets revolved about the sun, which was clearly supported by Galileo’s results, and Galileo died under house arrest by the Inquisition in January 1642 in Arcetri, where his tomb remained hidden for a century.The authors provide manuscripts, drawings by Galileo and art from the period to illustrate this fascinating account of the life of the man who, more than any other, forced the world to open its eyes to the sky above us.

I'm a big reader AND a telescope enthusiast. Yet I couldn't get through this book.The text is ponderous and plodding. I couldn't find the rhythm to it. If there is one, it was probably lostin the translation.Too bad for me! A subject I am interested in and I am a history buff and a reader. When that many clicks are not able tokeep me reading, something is wrong.

All my life I have 'gotten things done' that other, very smart, hardworking people couldn't. I've called myself "an excellent number two". Singer-songwriter—and now author—Ellie Holcomb ​began her musical career touring the country with her husband in the Americana band Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. This is an absolutely beautiful book. Beautiful illustrations, beautifully written, and a beautiful message. I highly recommend it.

Beyond impressed with this beautiful children's book and we can't wait to give it to our daughter for Christmas. Our three year old loves to sing and is often asked by her brother to stop, until one day I told her that God made her to sing. This book brings even more truth and light to those words, that God made her to sing. The illustrations are gorgeous. Looking forward to gifting this to many others this year too. Would make a perfect baby shower gift.

This is absolutely beautiful in every way! My kids loved all the animals and the gorgeous artwork. Such a sweet book! And baby wearing!!

Ellie has done an outstanding job on this book! She was so smart to make the pages strong so little hands could enjoy touching and pointing at the beautifully illustrated pictures! My daughter loves the page with the little girl twirling. That's the who she wants to be because the little girls dress "spins". And my son loved the page with the whales "those are so cool!" and as a mom I loved the message. Ellie cleverly weaves in a perfect message about how God loves His children. Warning you will probably choke up as you get to the end because you know if your child can fully grasp the love of the Father they will move through all the hard stuff in life with confidence of Whose they are. Thanks Ellie! We are so glad our book arrived! PS - I would take a picture for the review but the book is in my daughters bed with her :)

At my house, we purchased the CD “Sing Creation Songs” on iTunes a week before this wonderful book came out. The CD goes along with the book. My grandson had the songs memorized, so he loved the book immediately. The story is precious and the illustrations are amazing. I have purchased six books and CD’s. And I may need to make another order. Everyone I know is getting one for Christmas.

We listened (endlessly) to the "Sing: Creation Songs" music that goes along with this book ahead of the book release. The lyrics of the first song and the book are the same, so my kids were reciting the book with me as I read it the first time. A beautiful idea and gorgeous illustrations. My 6 & 3 year old both love it, and I've already bought a copy to give as a baby gift. Do yourself a favor and get the music too. Good words to be sowing into your little's (and yours!) hearts.

Such a beautiful book! The story-line is cute and the illustrations are to die for! Great for children ages 1-3 yrs. (just because it’s rather short and it will hold a younger child’s attention. Overall, a great purchase at an amazing price! I highly recommend this book!
