FYI, there is no downside to this little gem.

Needed this book for class, arrived promptly and in great condition.GREAT book for anyone looking to learn how to lead others. Unfortunately, leadership isn't something that all parents teach to their kids anymore, but this book will easily fill that void. FULL of good content that will help you grow as a person and as a leader. In teaching my kids how to be leaders, this is a book I will refer to often.

Dr. John Maxwell is an authority when it comes to any subject dealing with the huge and very seldom misunderstood topic called "leadership". About the Author

Patrick L. Colin earned his M.S. (1970) and Ph.D. (1973) in Marine Sciences at the University of Miami Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, working on the biology of western Atlantic reef fishes. In 1979 he moved to the Pacific, Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands, and later to Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia. While at Enewetak in 1983 he built an epoxy fiberglass aircraft, called a COZY, which he still uses today in Palau for vertical and oblique aerial photography (the eye in the sky ). He has spent extensive time underwater and in the air collecting information for this volume. Dr. Colin is one of the most experienced scientific divers in the world, working from shallow-water habitats to deep technical diving depths, as well as piloting and collecting from submersibles.

While researching the legal ramifications of self-publishing several months ago, I contacted Helen Sedwick to obtain a copy of her original edition of the “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook”. I am a new author with no experience in the world of either traditional publishing or self-publishing, and I had no idea where to begin. I was lucky enough to be provided with a pre-launch copy of this updated and expanded version of the Handbook for review and have found the “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” to be an indispensable reference tool and guide. With the help of Ms. Sedwick’s Handbook I am now about half way through setting up my own self-publishing business.The “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” is clear and easy to understand, uncluttered by “legalese”, and I would highly recommend it to any author who is interested in self-publishing. The Handbook provides you with all of the basic facts for every aspect of self-publishing as well as step-by-step instructions and additional important references. Ms. Sedwick is direct and honest about the risks and potential dangers of self-publishing without being “foreboding” or negative. She points out the pitfalls, but does not give you the impression that the whole process would be “too much” for an inexperienced person to handle. That was and is a big plus for me. It is much easier to absorb information and learn something new if you are presumed intelligent. And there is a lot to learn. I will continue to use the “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” in taking all of the steps necessary to finish setting up my business and reach my goal of becoming a self-published author.If you are looking for a valuable self-publishing guide and legal reference tool, a resource to help you make informed decisions about how to set up your own self-publishing business, this book would make a great addition to your library.S. I read this book in about a day. Everything is laid out clearly and points to exactly where to turn to do further research. Every self-publisher needs this as a reference tool. I would recommend reading this right after your manuscript is complete so that you can map out the life of your book.

I have the 2nd Ed. of Ms. Sedwick's , and have read enough of it to already consider it to be a fine product. Her style of writing is clear. I even find it to be pleasurable reading. Overall she gives this reviewer confidence in her book. She appears to know and cover her subject more than adequately. It even contains material on estate planning and taxes for writers. The book's well-considered design promotes ease of reading. (NOTE): I am a long-retired lawyer who took copyright law in law school decades ago.

Everything about this book is excellent. While I originally purchased it for some information and advise on pen names and writing about real live people, which has become a big concern for me, and my first little book I am writing, I ended up reading every word in the entire book. She has given me a blueprint to follow for my entire journey and I am paying close attention to each step. She gives easy to follow instruction and advise on each step you need to be aware of if you are new to the writing world. She has put so much information in the book and I am following her advise on it all and just ordered my first book that she referenced regarding resources.It is so well written and such an easy read that I could not get enough and have re-read many sections. I fell in love with the entire book as it is beautiful to look at. The size of the book makes for a good read as the width let's the page you just turned, fall nicely to the side as to be out of the way. The design inside is gorgeous and easy on the eyes for both content and looks. The entire book, it's technical information and the artistry of the look you get to see is almost magical. Like I said, I fell in love and I thank the author for her expertise, advise and vision. Being a newbie, I am smitten.

I found this book while just starting the murky process of publishing my first ebook. What seemed daunting and fraught with bad decisions before reading this book became quite manageable. Helen (the author) succinctly addressed every consideration I worried about (plus many more) and gave me the confidence to just get on with it. Using the book as a template, I made a long, prioritized to-do list and worked through it. A week later, decisions had been made, the work was complete (including a supporting website), and the book was published on both Amazon and Draft2Digital. Helen's book significantly reduced the time involved in first-time self-publishing while increasing confidence. Extremely valuable!

It is fairly easy to actually write a book compared to navigating the ins and out of getting it published. In these days of self-publishing, understanding the legal, practical, and fundamental issues surrounding your work is critical. Helen Sedwick has done the legwork and you can learn a lot even if you are fortunate enough to land an agent and a publisher. It is easy to read and more importantly, easy to understand the framework that we are trying to work within.

While I was working on my latest novel I had several legal questions come up that needed answers. After scouring the internet for those answers I came across Helen Sedwick’s book. Her book is one of the best sources of information available to independent writers – short of paying for face-to-face time with a real attorney specializing in the subject. The author’s writing style is very straightforward and quite easy for even a novice to understand. If you are considering self-publishing your own book you should read this book first.

Li Po and Tu Fu are traditionally regarded by the Chinese as their two greatest poets. Together their poetry has a "balance of nature". Sometimes they are referred to as one poet, "Li-Tu".This book has a wonderful introduction which tells of each man, his life and together of their friendship. What we know is that they lived during the Tang Dynasty which is considered the 'golden age' of China in which the arts flourished. According to the introduction we do not have an exact date and place of Li Po's birth but it is estimated to be 701 somewhere near the frontier of the Soviet Union. What I love best about Li Po's poetry is his great imagination and imagery. I believe he was a "Romantic" poet. Li Po's view of the world is not set in reality but how he imagines it to be which makes his poetry beautiful. Some of my favorite poems by Li Po: "Drinking Alone with the Moon" about drinking his wine among the flowers and talking to the moon. The moon encourages him and becomes his friend - very lovely poem. Also "Old Poem" is very fanciful and rich - "Did Chaung Chou dream / he was the butterfly, / Or the butterfly / that it was Chaung Chou?" One that I read again and again is entitled "A song of Adieu to the Queen of the Skies, After a Dream Voyage to Her". This is a mystical poem talking of seafarers who tell of the Fairy Isles. The language is simply gorgeous.Tu Fu's nature is different than Li Po's but he is equally as talented. According to the introducton, "Tu Fu as a man is contrasted with Li Po in almost every conceivable way." Many consider him to be the greater of the two poets. His poems are autobiographical and historical. Several of his poems are ballads to great people and others deal with loneliness and seclusion but they are beautiful and moving to read.Although the two poets were very different, they knew and respected one another and it is just a matter of personal taste as to which one you might prefer. Either way this is a beautiful book with a rather long but interesting introduction and it is well worth it for the English translations of these poems.Here's a poem by Li Po saying farewell to a friend:Blue mountains lie beyond the north wall;Round the city's eastern side flows the white water.Here we part, friend, once forever.You go ten thousand miles, drifting awayLike an unrooted water-grass.Oh, the floating clouds and the thoughts of a wanderer!Oh, the sunset and the longing of an old friend!We ride away from each other, waving our hands,While our horses neigh softly, softly . . . . "

This is a Chinese classic and for good reason.

I am not giving the stars to the translation or the edition. This is the only book on Li Po I could find available a few months ago. I guess I was lucky enough to run into an old edition of Li Po's poetry at my University library years ago, and had been looking for a copy since then. Got this. Want more.

By trying to stay close to the Chinese versions of these poems, the translations were flat. The Chinese invented the lyric poem, so I expected lyric translation in English. I was disappointed and returned the book.

This book is dated somewhere around 1971. It still uses Wade Giles, which is a major drawback for students trying to match up anything with the pinyin currently in use.I've just received the book from Amazon, and I will give it the benefit of the doubt due to the explanation of Chinese poetic forms other reviewers have praised. But keep in mind that this book has the absolute bare minimum of Chinese characters, and virtually no usable reproductions of the the original poems in Chinese characters (hanzi), or romanization. In other words, it is a book dedicated almost exclusively to translations of the poems, not the poems themselves. While translation is a praiseworthy and thankless task, there are enough students around today trying to struggle with these poems using the Chinese, in addition to a translation, that it is worth it for some reproduction of the originals to be included. Beware, there is a bit less here than meets the eye.Anyway, as Confucious might have said, had he been born in Rome, "Caveat emptor."

I have never submitted a book review in all my years of reading (and there have been many) but this book told an emotional truth that I could not ignore. The years before and during the First World War are examined in an almost dreamy manner, as if the speakers are recalling their memories of the past but this book is by no means without relevance to the present. Principally, it offers an insight into the workings of the creative mind where the urge to express oneself is paramount. It explores what happens when that urge is stifled, when the expansiveness of self expression is lost and one becomes merely useful - a facilitator to the self-expression of a partner with whom one has once been desperately in love. Besides the glorious selfishness of the creative mind, the author's exploration of the lot of women at a time when they were straining to escape the constraints of the past and yet were held back by their own natures is unparalleled in my view. Add to all this an inventive structure which allows central truths to be questioned before they are confirmed and you have a novel that is beyond impressive.

Historical fiction is fascinating to me. It takes great skill to deeply research a historic individual and time period and then build a story that weaves together known fact with an imagined story. I was extremely impressed by this book and the fascinating figures of Edward Steichen and his family and friends. I have read this book several times & shared it with several friends -- the author's writing style & voice are so gorgeous that I think she could write about anything & I would enjoy it.

Internationally well known American photographer Edward Steichen novel takes place during the onset of the 1st World War in France. This is one of my favorite periods of time. A great feel for what it was like to be living in that time. Loved it!

I am so enjoying this book and hope I don't get to the end too soon. As a busy innkeeper, I don't have much time for reading, but I'm so glad I bought this book and will certainly recommend it to friends. I'm in awe of Emily's knowledge of war-time aerial photography, and war in general.

I did not order this in Kindle because I am well aware that any illustrations in Kindle are almost useless. How could I want to read a book about Edward Steichen without his photographs. It would be preferable if Amazon did not offer books in Kindle which depend upon illustrations for much of their meaning.

Emily Mitchell creates a wide angle photograph of Edward Steichen and his circle of family/friends circa WW1, with considerable attention to detail."At St. Omer, he'd learned that when a road was used, it wore away. The boots of marching infantry, the wheels of the field guns and supply wagons, the horses' hooves - all these stripped away the dry surface, revealing rock and soil beneath. Compare two prints of the front taken on different days. If the road had turned in the second from pale gray to near black, an army had moved along it." p.44And another:"But when he told her about it, Clara stopped playing and looked at him with an expression of disbelief. Then she put her head down on the keys of the piano, so that a chromatic mass of notes rose out of the instrument, and engulfed her, filling the room with dissonance." p. 195A compelling meditation on the arc of one artist's life...

Thanks to Emily Mitchell for giving us one of those extraordinary novels that remain in the mind, evoking strong feelings and provoking new thoughts long after one turns the last page. Mitchell's subtle, unmannered, and decisive prose is a non-stop pleasure to read. Her story steadily gains momentum until, at the end, one feels the wind whistling past one's ears and hangs on for dear life. Most impressive, perhaps, is the refusal of this novel to play to type. TLSW is not a love story set against the "background" of war but a meditation on love and war that involves us in the interplay of spontaneous sentiments and a powerful (indeed, hyperactive) social environment. Similarly, despite the author's obvious sympathy for Clara Steichen's plight in a male-dominated culture, the book escapes categorization as either a feminist or implicitly gendered novel. Mitchell's empathetic imagination permits us to enter so deeply into the inner lives of both Edward and Clara that "taking sides" between them finally seeems reductionist and irrelevant. Glamorous, creative, confused, yearning for personal meaning and social peace, they were who they were, and Emily Mitchell has made them live again for us.

Beautifully written, authentic, atmospheric historical fiction with immortal themes of love, art, and war.
