This makes a solid foundation for first chapter, which covers kanji tattoos and takes the reader much further back than they might expect! Did you know that before being used for punishment, tattoos could denote rank, or social status? That they were sometimes used to mark pledges, or to identify fallen warriors? Or maybe you're looking to get a kanji tattoo, yourself--advice on that can be found here, too.The next three chapters cover other designs and motifs common to the artform. Every example is provided with an in-depth explanation of its significance and history, complete with pictorial examples. This is what I would call a beginners intro to traditional and neo-traditional Japanese tattoos. It has a lot of basic info on different styles, motifs, techniques, history, etc. Lots of variety and great quality pictures, makes a good coffee table book if you like Japanese culture or a reference book if you are a fellow tattoo artist. I wouldn't use it for stenciling but if you need a Japanese reference book for your clients I'd definitely buy it.Only 4 stars because it doesn't go super in-depth in to any one topic. Next I'd like to get a bigger/more expensive book with a bit more info/history on the elements it covers. Either way I still love it and I'm very happy with the purchase, especially because some of the other Japanese tattoo books I bought on Amazon were absolutely terrible. If you're considering between a few I definitely recommend this one!

A thorough and interesting read on Japanese tattoo art. The photos are vivid and numerous - showing the variety and depth of the different designs, as well as discussions on their symbolism. There are a number of fascinating tidbits (e.g., the guy who collected full bodysuit tattoos of deceased people) and interviews with masters of the art. Definitely well worth a read, even if you're not that into tattoos!

I enjoyed the way the author mixed history, artists' commentary, and the perspectives of clients into his account. The pictures and explanations were clear and added to my understanding of the topics. I would definitely recommend this book.

I thought this was an excellent book that explained the history and cultural relevance of Japanese tattoos and how they and the state of tattooing in Japan is evolving today. It has beautiful photos, interesting 1-2 page profiles of different artists and clients, and is very well written. Incredibly useful for anything interested in the art of Japanese tattoos or thinking of getting one. This book might save you from some common mistakes and lead you to a more interesting design!

The book goes in depth on both symbolic and technical aspects of Irezumi (Japanese Tattoos), and it presents a fascinating yet unbiased look at art, language, nature, religion, history, and contemporary pop-culture of Japan. It sheds light to a sometimes misunderstood and mistreated subculture of the island nation. Full disclosure.....I have met the author but that is entirely beside the point because this book shines on its own merits. Abdi writes beautifully as he tells the brutal tale of his childhood in war ravaged Somalia Even when he moved on to Kenya it was still a perilous time for him. He wanted so badly to become American which was a land he knew from watching movies.Through chance and a good bit of luck he found support through the BBC and NPR before he won his golden ticket to get a visa to move to the country of his dreams.Once in the US he had to make many adjustments as he learned to live in Maine.This whole life experience would have broken many but instead it made Abdi stronger and instead of hardening his heart the adversity made his heart bigger.Please read this book....you will not regret it.

Once upon a time I was an avid reader of non-fiction. Now, as a 70 something senior, I gravitate toward lighter escapism fiction. I heard about this book on NPR and decided to check it out on Amazon. It was all the positive reviews without a single 3 stars or lower that prompted me to download it to my Kindle. Am I glad I did. The writing flowed, the story captivated. I could not bring myself to put it down. If like me you rarely or never read memoirs or non-fiction, I urge you to make an exception and read Call Me American. It is a heart wrenching story of what it is like to live in a war-torn country. It is also a story of hope and perseverance that will lift your spirits. I hope Mr. Iftin has another amazing book in the works.

I first heard of Abdi on NPR. I sat in my grocery's store's parking lot for 50 min. to hear the whole interview by a British reporter as he talked every few days with Abdi while he was still in Kenya and trying to get his green card. It was scary, astonishing and life-affirming. Abdi is now in the US and I hope to hear him at a book signing in Tempe or Phoenix, AZ. He writes so well. Do NOT MISS this book.

This is an incredible, true story of a young boy, born in Mogadishu, Somalia just as his country is being torn apart by civil war. He miraculously survives the constant barrage of warfare surrounding him, suffering devastating losses, and witnessing horror after horror. Somehow, this child, recognizing the futility of the tribal warfare, grasps onto the few elements of American culture that he can find, teaches himself English, and imagines a future for himself in America. You have to read the book, but you will understand, it is nothing short of incredible that he actually makes it. I learned so much from his story. It's clear to me now that we need to become a more welcoming country for these incredible people from desperate war torn areas. More people need to read this book.

I finished it on Saturday. Beautifully written. (With no ghost writer, people! He really did teach himself English AND can write and speak better than most of us.) I could hardly breathe the whole time and when I finished I didn't know what to do... I cried a little for all the terror and devastation. And then, everywhere I have gone since then, I see things more than a little differently. Your book is incredible Abdi Iftin. Your survival is mind-blowing, and we are all blessed by your ability to tell the story. I don't know how you remembered all of those days. Each moment of life seemed like another threading of the needle, under extreme conditions.

I have read a lot of memoirs and novels, but have never read anything like this book before. It has opened my eyes to what those seeking asylum in America endure. I thought I knew, just anecdotally from news stories, but I didn't know. I still can't truly know, because to know is to experience. But Abdi Iftin has invited us into his life with a stunning memoir, and he's done it through beautiful and thoughtful writing. This book also gave me a perspective on America that I have never considered, and I hope it will allow me not to take for granted our freedoms and the peace in which we are so fortunate to live, and so many died to ensure for us. To this brave young man: thank you for writing this book. I wish you much peace and hope your family is safe and healthy. To anyone considering reading this book: I can't recommend it enough.

I couldn't put down this memoir once I'd picked it up. Like others, I bought this book after hearing the author's story on NPR. I needed to hear what happened after he made it to America: what was life like? Where did he go, what did he do? These questions were answered, but just as compelling was everything that preceded the NPR story: his parents' lives in the bush herding animals, his early years in Mogadishu, and his family's survival through decades of war.Before I opened the cover I knew little of Somalia, and it is now a country that has texture and taste in my mind. For most of the book I felt a sense of anger and mourning due to the senseless violence, the US's role in destabilizing the country, and the utter destruction of a vibrant culture and people. But the author helped paint a picture--his picture--of a nation that could rise again, and of a rich future for his homeland. The book leaves the reader with this hope, in spite of an epilogue filled with foreboding following the 2016 election and growing anti-immigrant rhetoric: a fear that he never thought he'd find in the US.I am grateful for this story for many reasons: to know and appreciate a beautiful culture I didn't know existed; for the reminder of why it's important to resist extremism and hateful rhetoric; and as a reminder to practice empathy towards others. This book has also left me with a heavy question: knowing these lessons, what will I do with it? To that, I do not yet have an answer.

Hmm talks too much about himself...It wasn't as deep as I thought it would be. Stopped reading it and bought 'Winning Ugly' which is way better if you want to improve your game with strategy. 'The inner game of Tennis" is a much better book if you are looking for something more mental.

If Vic Braden's name is on it, you should read it. He is one of the top tennis coaches in the world. This book is very helpful.

Tennis, for those who are avid and willing to learn more, requires attention to the fundamentals of the serve, the approach shot, etc. (Many a 3.0 or 3.5 club player needs to pay attention even to the fundamentals rather than relying on an endless parade of moonshots/loopy-doopys or just whacking the ball, but that is another essay.What Vic Braden (and Brad Gilbert) emphasize is the mental side of the game. The only alternative to learning from these books is learning from the tenacity and intensity of Rafa Nadal. For most of us who seek to consistently win both would be best. And lessons from a Pro', say, at the club.Whatever is done one does have to be committed to change to improve, I'm just saying... .

HIghly recommend it

After being praised by pros and even attending adult tennis camp, I still found myself choking in matches. Although I'm a female who grew up pre-Title IX, I thought I could learn how to compete, but it just wasn't happening. No matter how much I learned about form and strategy, when it came to game time, I'd lose.This book has helped explain what's going on in my head and what I can do to either win or just plain enjoy tennis for fun. It's going to take some time to put Braden's tips to use, but his common-sense approach simple to understand and the data he uses to back it up convinces even the skeptics.Here's one tidbit that makes sense: get back one more ball, and you'll up your game-wining percentage by 33 percent. That's an amazing number and I find myself diving for balls now that I ordinarily consider hopeless. I'm going for that 33 percent!Recommended for all all levels of play.Only caveat: they could update this edition. Some of the players used as examples retired years ago.Lynn

When it comes to refining your mental approach to the game, you've got to hand it to Vic Braden! I've always had the physical talent, but never the mental capacity to outthink my opponent, even if it was only a girl. Vic taught me to write down useful acronyms of my strategies and reactions to my opponent's strategies and shots as well on an extended wrist band that I make reference to between points - and sometimes during points(not recommended for beginners or women). For example, GAN is oftentimes effective when my net-happy opponent arrogantly holds his racquet above chest level(go after nuts). For a female opponent, Vic calls it GAP. This helps to teach a lesson of humility, says Vic.Perhaps the only point of contention I have with Vic Braden is his affinity for the Aussie formation in doubles while putting down your racquet and using both hands via sign language to communicate cryptic codes while serving. It's just too bizzarre. One other bone of contention with Vic is his advocating to 'release your juices' before the match, and hence any bent-up sexual frustration, in order to 'fully become one with the tennis ball.' To each his own.

This book inspired me to see things in matches I hadn't noticed before and inspired me to think about things not just on a tennis court but at work and in social relationships. It presents the material in a very organized fashion and is right on point on many points. I've had it for years but just recently took the time to look at it carefully. I wish I had read it years ago.
