He doesn't feel right living the normal life among other teens. Maybe a third or more of the book is his time among his peers and making plans to return. The rest of the story is his time in the wilderness. This time is different because he has supplies and equipment which he didn't have in the previous books.REVIEWER'S OPINION:I like thinking about how I live vs. how Brian lived in the wild. It's a good perspective. It may have contributed to my desire to get rid of some of my clutter. I am reminded of a scientist who studied insects - maybe ants - I can't remember. He said people respect nonfiction but they read fiction, which is why he wrote a fictional story about insects. At the end of Brian's Return the author mentions his extensive personal experiences in the wild. He said he knew he wanted to eventually write about them, and that many of the scenes in the Brian books were things that actually happened to him. I'm glad he wrote in a fictional manner rather than a nonfiction/memoir. I probably wouldn't have read that. But I loved reading these things through Brian.I also love reading about justice and revenge. So I enjoyed the scene where a football player bully started something with Brian. But Brian won that fight.The book is shorter than standard novels. The narrator was Peter Coyote who was excellent.OTHER BOOKS:The author wrote many books, but the Hatchet series consists of:5 stars. My 9 year old LOVED Hatchet so we bought him all the books by Gary Paulsen. He says they all seem to follow the same literary "formula" just in different settings - winter, an island, etc but he loves the outdoors and adventure books so he enjoys them, despite their slight predictability.

This is the fourth book I have read in Gary Paulsen's "Hatchet" series and - amazingly enough - the magic is as strong as ever. I read it on my Kindle and so was unaware that I was coming to the end of this slim book, so that when it ended, I was shocked and disappointed. The place Paulsen chose for the end was absolutely appropriate, but I wanted it to go on and on. I was by no means ready to say goodbye to Brian and to the beautiful and hazardous Canadian north country.At age 75, I am new to Paulsen's books. If I can fall in love with them, I'd say anybody over the age of 8 or 10 will love them, too. njs

This entire series evokes images of nature, personal growth and overcoming in ways that otherwiseccan only be attained through real life experience. It is no surprise that the author lived through many of the experiences that the character Brian and doors throughout the series. This book and the series are truly transformational.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I read paulsen's books with struggling students and they too enjoy the outdoor books. I live in a rural section of the blue ridge mountains where outdoor life and hunting and fishing are very important parts of everyday life.

After returning to city life, Brian found there was something missing. He returns to the land that has grown into his spirit.

Prepare to be bored, very bored. Great for insomnia. To much over explaining.All this build up to an adventure and it ends unclimaticly. Paulson should have just written this together with Brian's Hunt under just one title.

Paulsen does it again but with fresh eyes. Purchased this as an audible so when traveling my husband can take his kindle & the narration I can listen in. These audible books have started to restore my husbands ability to read following the stroke, those pathways were blocked of ,,, the audible has helped re-train his brain to recognize words again. As an enthusiastic but very amateur geologist, this wonderful guide hit the spot for me. First, the guide starts with an easily-understood overview of geological processes and the geological history of Nova Scotia. Second, directions for driving, parking and walking to the sites are very clearly described, and include helpful sketch maps. This information is linked to both routes on the standard Nova Scotia tourist route maps and to precise GPS waypoint coordinates. Third, the guide is full of useful color diagrams, photos and other illustrations, along with excellent captions. Finally, the writing is refreshingly clear. And if you can't make it to Nova Scotia in person, the guide serves as an extremely enjoyable armchair guide.

As a American not familiar with NS, but interested in planning a geology tour, I find it to be a great resource....trip planning still in the works.

How do you make a book about rocks fascinating? This is how. Partly a very accessible tour of history as seen through geology, partly a travelogue, I now can't wait too see Nova Scotia for myself. And I'll have this book with me at all times.

Let me first start by saying I am a geologist by training, with an advanced degree and decades of experience in various geological disciplines. I live in southern New England, which shares much of the same geology as Nova Scotia, for over 25 years, where I have studied the regional geology from a professional and academic perspective. I have used many field guides as a travel companion to understand regional geology in places I visit around the world.If you are looking for a roadside guide, this book isn't one.If you are looking for good basic geological maps of the province, this book doesn't have any.If you are looking to understand the rocks you are looking at, when passing by many of the spectacular outcrops in Fundy, the Annapolis valley, Cape Breton, the Cabot Trail, the Caleigh Trail and on and on and on, this book doesn't provide them.If you want to understand how today's landscape was shaped by glacial action, you won't find it in this book, which is an unbelievable omission, given the huge impact that repeated continental glaciations of the last 2 million years have had on the landscape of northeastern North America. At the Five Islands location, which contains exposures of early Jurassic sandstones, there is also a thick deposit of stratified glacial drift and there is no mention of it in the guide. Here is a perfect textbook example of glacial processes which would be very instructive to a lay reader and not one word. The term glacier is not even in the index.Instead, what you get is a basic academic primmer on the tectonic development of the province, which is of some use to the lay reader. The province consists of three tectonic terranes, or groups of rock formations which share a common geologic history. The book then goes on to divide the various locations you want to visit into three groups based on these terranes. Since rock outcrops representing these terranes are scattered throughout the province, you end up having to page through three sections of the book to find field locations that may be in geographic locations right next to each other, which I found maddeningly frustrating.The other thing is that the places the author suggests you visit are ones that will teach you some lessons about an aspect of geology, like an example of a fault, or type of metamorphism, or folding, or sedimentary deposition. That is all well and good if your goal is to teach geology, but many of the suggested outcrops are nondescript or poorly exposed. I got the impression before I went to Nova Scotia, that it was probably hard to find good exposures of any rock formations. Much to my surprise, especially in Cape Breton, there were spectacular outcrops one could easily see at the many roadside pullouts and absolutely no discussion of them. In one instance, a field location suggested by the author was a stone wall in a Cabot Trail pullout for a replica Scottish stone cottage, where you were to look at boulders in the wall. You have got to me kidding me.Towards the end of my trip, I stopped by the Fundy Geological Museum. In the gift shop, I purchased the Nova Scotia Geological Highway Map, published by the Atlantic Geoscience Society. This map is also easily understood by the lay person, providing brief context for the various geographic regions one might visit, provides dozens of locations along roads one might drive on, has three-dimensional block diagrams, which provide better context than plain map views (which the map has in abundance as well on the reverse side). This document does not go into glacial geology much either, but at least it mentions the glacial deposits at Five Islands.The bottom line is that this book is a waste of money. It is neither fish nor fowl, as the saying goes. It is not an academic text. It is not a practical field guide for the novice, it provides no regional context, and it provides no information on glacial processes that have also shaped the province.Give it a pass and buy the Nova Scotia Geological Highway Map. You can order it from the Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre (902-667-7231) or the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History (902-424-6451). Please note that I have no association with the Atlantic Geoscience Society or the other organizations.

Good day: to be honest, the product did not meet my expectations. The book itself is an amazing publication, however because I could not get it anywhere else, I ordered and purchased through 'Amazon' which was costly indeed! For the price I paid, I would have expected the book to arrive in perfect condition. It did not! It is clear to me that in the packaging process, and by means of some packaging machine, several of the books' pages have been damaged. I could put see through cellotape on those damaged pages, but I would rather return the book and get a copy that is in pristine condition. Thank you. Tessa Barnard

This is great fun for those who are interested in unusual words, even though there is, I think, a slight padding out. By my reckoning at least, some ten words out of the 105 listed here beginning with the letter A are not really all that unusual. But this must be a somewhat subjective judgment. Some 73 of the words under A I had never come across, and that's a pretty good score for this beautifully produced book. Would make a lovely present for a philaveryphile!

This is a lovely book that has the story of a yarn farm in all its glory and seasons. It also includes patterns for knitting along with delicious recipes. The book is divided into seasons with each season having its share of dyeing, combing, spinning and weaving.While I had thought this book would have more patterns, the narrative is excellent and the reader learns what it's like to have a yarn farm.

I saw this book showcased on one of the many crafting shows I watch and knew right away I needed it in my library. I appreciate how Barbara incorporated the in's and out's of sheep farming with actual patterns for really pretty and usable projects. It's the perfect gift for that serious yarn crafter in your life. The author takes the reader through an entire year of what a sheep farmer must go through, carefully narrating the many aspects of being a sheep farmer. It's a dubious task indeed. I have a much greater appreciation for the farmers of our wool industry. I have an even greater appreciation for all the small farmers who don't make millions, but are in it for the love of the craft. I highly recommend this book.

This is a sweet, fast-reading book with lovely photos and a good introduction to the shepherding life. As a "yarn farmer" myself, I really would have enjoyed hearing more from the author about her day to day experiences with her flock. Still, it's a nice book for the armchair sheep enthusiast.I am more a yarn-maker than a knitter, so I can't speak to the quality of the patterns included in the book, but the projects (there are 8 knitting patterns included, plus a weaving project, a couple of spinning projects, a clutch of recipes and some tutorial information on dyeing), look lovely and appealing.

I decided long ago that I don't have the knitting gene so some may wonder why I would purchase a book about raising sheep for yarn. Good question... for this book is delightful for even those of us who do not knit.I love reading about how things are grown whether it is the food or eat or the yarn which was knitted into my favorite lavender sweater. And this book is the best I have ever read on that subject. The pictures alone would make it worth the read but the author shows a skill in writing as well as yarn farming.I thoroughly enjoyed reading each chapter as we are taken through four seasons of what it is like to raise sheep, especially those whose wool will be used for fine quality yarn. From the birth of the baby lambs, to the sheering of the wool, to what it is like to be a part of a community of farmers and growers, to the challenges of keeping one's livestock warm in snow and ice... this book kept me interested from the start to the end.And if you happen to be a knitter or know one, well then the icing on the cake has to be the beautiful patterns that are given.

Barbara Parry paints a vivid verbal picture of the background story of the production of the wool fiber and yarn that we knitters, spinners, weavers and dyers love so much. Parry obviously loves and cares for the sheep in her flock. I am amazed by the year-round daily chores and responsibilities entailed in sheep farming. Parry punctuates her story with vibrant photographs of the farm, flock and related activities through the four seasons of each year. Activities include knitting, weaving, and dyeing. Parry includes sample directions for those, plus a few food recipes. I LOVE this book! And I no longer cringe at the price tag on a hank of fine quality wool yarn. Knowing more about its production makes it worth every penny.

im so glad i bought this book! im not even done with it yet and had to write a review of how much i am enjoying it! I especially love all the great pictures that are included to help illustrate her stories. i am an avid yarnie and have been in awe of sheep and how yarn is created for awhile and this is a great book to help learn about what it takes throughout an entire year on the "yarn farm". the book even includes some patterns for cardigans, mittens, sweaters, etc. what isnt to like?! this book is beautiful from start to finish and a must have! it was well for the wait! :D

I didn't realize that this book had been out for some time; the year journey and stories of the author are wonderful. As a knitter and crocheter it's a delight to read about what I only dream about. The author is entertaining and humorous. I love the shenanigans of the goats and sheep. If you're a fiber person, it's a great read.

I loved this book because it was such pleasant reading. I have been a lifetime long knitter, but I never really knew before I read this book how yarn is made. I certainly won't gripe so much anymore about the cost of wool! There's so much hard work that goes into producing it.
