At about the age of 23 I discovered for the first time that I had a mind. Previous to that, I had been more-or-less incapable of any sort of introspection. Smoking marijuana opened my unconscious mind and I felt like I was able to step outside of myself and see myself for the first time. I immediately started reading books other than adventure novels. One of the first authors I discovered was Eric Fromm. His thinking completely galvanized me. I thought that he had figured out all human problems, and all people had to do was pay attention. I knew essentially nothing about Freud, Jung, Marx, Nietzsche, and so on, and Fromm synthesized all of their thinking into a coherent system. Fromm championed the bogey-man of right-wing Christianity, namely secular humanism. The idea of which is that the foundations for value systems should be based on man’s autonomy and reason. In order to know what was good for man, one has to know the nature of man. Authoritarian ethics is an irrational system based on acquiring power over people. This strikes me as so self-evident that it’s incredible that it could arouse controversy. Fromm claims that one of the best tools for knowing human nature is psychoanalysis. These days Freud’s ideas are commonly held to be erroneous, and some critics dismiss Fromm’s ideas as he relies upon ideas of Freud. This is nonsense. Freud was one of mankind’s greatest geniuses. While it is true that his motivations discoveries he made regarding human nature were physiologically clockwork, following the prejudices of his time, Fromm acknowledged this. Too completely dismiss Freud’s ideas on this basis would be like denouncing Kepler’s equations because he thought that planetary motion was caused by the “Holy Spirit,” or Newton’s theory of gravity because he explained it in terms of action at a distance.Rereading Fromm forty some years later, I am astonished at the extent to which he and I think alike. No doubt, this is because I devoured his work at an impressionable time of my life. So I still think that his ideas should be taught in high school. One thing I’ve become convinced of over the years is that irrational devotion to dogma is most often the source of evil, whether the dogma is religious or political. Teaching young people to not enslave their minds to authoritarian dogma is simply sane.

Fromm's ideas are timeless. His psychological, philosophical and political insights are more valuable today as our society faces the problems of growing inequality. He shows that the superficial self-help industry and the corporate advertising complex see us as easy prey for the quick fixes they offer as solutions for the deep struggles we face as a society and as individuals. This book demonstrates that we all have the ability to understand our own needs and society's needs on a deeper level. Simply having faith in our potential to develop our talents and combining our skills cooperatively with others will improve our society and our own mental health.

I last read this book a year ago, and it's teachings have stayed in my mind as have those in Alfred North Whitehead's Aims of Education. In my mind this is the value of a good book. In a review of this work Dr.LeeD. Carlson complains that Fromm offers too little scientific evidence for his findings. My intent is not to belittle science, but to elevate humanism, the philosophy of Fromm. If you like Erich Fromm you will enjoy this book; if you don't like him, don't waste your money or time; if you don't know Fromm, you owe it to yourself to try this book.I have given it 5 stars. You might too, but you must read it first.

I Love Dr. Fromm, he is a highly evolved person, a person from the future. I also enjoy his tone and his writing also. He is aperson of high quality and care. I recommand his writings to everyone, especially people who are interested in improving themselves.

as described

I really like the writing style and at the same time the substance of Mr. Fromm’s research. It is just writing but I do feel the direct reflection of his ideas in myself and other people.

Fromm presents a non-theological view of the subject and is a dependable and accessible writer. Next stop - Durkheim's book on the subject.

One of the greatest works on psychology and sociology, by a serious and insightful thinker. I recommend all his fine works. Each one is a must have. This book is short, concise and easy to understand. Fromm was one of the best writers because he had the knack of making complex subjects simple and straightforward.

Erin:☆This Review Contains Spoilers☆This book satisfied me while I was reading it. Somewhat bittersweetly, as I finished it, I found my craving for new content increased. Seth has lost his memory and Ronodin has convinced him that they're brothers? That's certainly one way to have Seth's shadow charmer abilites improve. Brandon Mull has proven that even a spinoff series can have as many plot twists as the OG. One thing that disappointed me (but not enough that I care THAT much) is that there wasn't more Eve. I love my spunky little girl. And I need. More. Seveth. But there's so many things I enjoyed, so I might as well compile a list:• Ronodin is a good character. He's so different from his cousin, Bracken. It kind of reminds me of the Seth-Kendra dynamic.• Lomo? Yes please.• A non-unicorn fairy queen? Makes a LOT more sense. And at least I know why there was a flying rabbit on the cover. Honestly.• Knox and Tess?? And Tess can see the stuff without milk?????? I neED EXPLANATIONS????While there's much more I could share, the bottom line is this:I loved this, but I need the next one. I wish it was sooner than it probably will be. I'll just have to hope for the best.

This is the first time I bought any of the Fablehaven/Dragonwatch books as I had a friend who had them on the shelf and let me borrow them. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the series so when this one came out I did not want to wait. The only bad thing I could say against the CD's are that they do not have the chapter titles printed anywhere either on the cd's or a paper inside them. I am not one for giving away any spoilers, so I will simply say the story was engaging, and left me wishing the next book was already written.

Celebrant, King of the Dragons, is irate after Kendra and Seth beat him in the previous book. Now, he wants revenge. He plans to take over Wyrmroost by displacing the keepers. How? By finding the mysterious dominion stone.Kendra and Seth rush to a cursed castle to find the hidden stone, only to be pulled into a centuries old game that has the castle's residents turning into Gold or Silver. Celebrant is there too, but in a human avatar and unable to use his dragon powers. It is a rush to the finish. Whomever finds the stone will be the victor. My Thoughts-The Fablehaven books are always entertaining, and this one keeps up the pattern. In the previous book, Kendra and Seth were able to stop Celebrant from taking over the keeper's head quarters, but now the evil dragon has new plans, and they involve the deaths of both Kendra and Seth. His first try includes having Kendra abandoned on the road with no way to return to sanctuary. This is the first adventure of the book. Then, he plans to capture the dominion stone. Once all the characters get to the cursed castle things really heat up and Kendra and Seth are pulled into a game set up by a mischievous dwarf. The game has held the residents captive for over a thousand years. Along for the ride also come Kendra and Seth's younger cousins, Knox and Tess, who seem to have some secret powers of their own. New characters and new powers! Oh boy! The author's imagination runs as wild as in previous books and I was amazed at the new situations he developed.I enjoyed the mysteries, suspense and tension of the entire book and can't wait until the next book in the series comes out! I'm giving this 4 stars!

Brandon Mull never disappoints! This book was as fun and exciting as I expected. Clean and yet original and fascinating! I get so tired of gender issues, suggestive scenes, and crude language that everyone else is using now. Brandon Mull has not lowered his standards, just makes his characters awesome and memorable, and his plots are unexpected which is very refreshing for me. He also comes up with new and creative places and situations. Fascinating!!

I'm an avid reader of many genre. But Fablehaven is my favorite series of all time, because it's perfectly written and so much fun! I've read the entire series through at least five times :) The Wrath of the Dragon King (Dragonwatch #2) continues the thrilling adventures of Kendra, Seth, their family and friends. If you love the world of mystical creatures and magical realms you will definitely enjoy this series! Lots of surprises in this book (as well as a very concerning cliffhanger). I always have a hard time pacing my reading of Fablehaven books, and unfortunately finished the book in a few days... Can't wait for the next book!!!

We started with fabelhaven book #1 this summer as our family read aloud, and my kids fell head over heels obsessed with this series. As we ended with book 5, my oldest stumbled acrossed “Dragonwatch” (since she is dragon obsessed) and squealed when she read the first line of the book realizing it had more of Kendra & Seth’s adventures. We blew through both dragonwatch books as my children devoured every word. It was even a hot topic during dinner to talk about “What if this happens” or “Where is Warren?”. They have even taken up playing Yahtzee... to say they are chomping at the bite for Dragonwatch #3 would be an understatement.Well written, fun, adventures, the entire family enjoys this series.

As an amateur writer, I always marvel at the style and prose of Brandon. To be as good of a writer as him is my goal! This book, and most importantly the series, is something that you should absolutely NOT PASS BY! I love the apparent character development from when Kendra and Seth first stepped into this whole new world, and the description is absolutely marvelous! 10/10 would recommend for both adults and children alike!

I love the Fablehaven books sans was so happy to see the story picked up again and the characters evolve! I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

#162,624 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book--well, first let me clarify the "contains some sexual content." There are discussions of characters' sexual loneliness, of attempts to match make, of one gay character who appears briefly without his partner and talks at length with a single woman about otherness; there are perhaps a couple of scenes between the pastor, Sam, and his wife which obviously suggest a warm sexual sharing, none of which is portrayed. That's sexual content for this gentle, but also fierce, series. In this book, the most interesting thing to me was the frustrations of the ministry, the stresses it can put on a marriage, the preciousness of minutes of family life in such a household, the imperfections of the partners in any marriage--even a pastor's. I had a relative who was a pastor (not this denomination); I worked long years in another helping profession before returning to writing and reviewing. The strength, energy, inventiveness, frustrations, endlessness, and the obligations and trust place upon a pastor (or any identified helper) are ongoing and complex. While usually maintaining his humor that so adds human delight to these books, Gulley gives a very good presentation of these aspects of Sam's and Barbara's lives. His secondary characters maintain their usual mix of pull-your-hair-out frustration and coming-through-some-of-the-time (and completely blowing things once in a while), and a new one is introduced; I think interesting storylines will come her way. Gulley also presents particular imperfections in Sam's behavior in this novel; he makes a couple of foolish decisions, and they lead to some preposterous conclusions. One was highly believable; one was a step too far and just not realistic. (But funny!) There is a holiday fest scene that will relieve ever reader of regrets or mortification about our own holiday fiascos; this takes ours to the tenth power. Recommend and enjoyed! Some readers may not like seeing how hard the ministry can be, and there are strong religious right characters who may annoy or offend readers who are Friends or readers who are just not religious right. But a loving, sincere, somewhat true-to-life presentation of familiar community and characters, and a pleasant book, despite the genuine difficulties that for me were very interesting. Sam as a character has evolved considerably in this fourth book of the series, as has Barbara.

I expected a funny and encouraging novel but found it was depressing and discouraging. The author has issues with Evangelical Christians and presents an unrealistic ugly stereotype of evangelicals. As one who has served several churches in small towns, I appreciated the challenges the pastor faced. However, the characters in the novel are much too negative and stereotypic than in real life. I'm sad to find that this novel did not speak to me other in a negative way. I won't read any of the other Gulley novels in this series.

Philip Gulley is an author extraordinaire. I mean it. His books about pastoring a small Quaker church in a little northen town are so simple and straight forward, that at first you think...oh this is too simple...but hold on! Keep reading. His insight into life is so point on and honest. Soon you will be laughing out loud at the scenarios of the church and town's people. So many deep truths are embedded in the stories, not preachy at all, but your heart will be touched, warmed and tickled by them. It is addictive to read his books and this Signs and Wonders is just the tip of the iceberg. People....I think these books are a rare treat and I'm so glad I discovered them. They are every last one of them a solid treasure hidden behind a simple looking book. Don't miss them. Pretty soon they will be hard to find and each one is worthy of passing on to beloved friends and family. Love them...love them.

he is witty and funny, very light-hearted reading as long as you don't mind "spiritual fiction" that is very humanistic in its agenda. While enjoying the writing itself, I had to stop reading because it became frustrating at just how slanted the books are against other denominations other than quaker....especially Baptist...they seem to be the hardest hit denomination, and made to sound "nuts". So if you're a Christian looking for Christian fiction to enjoy, this is NOT the book for you.

In book 3 of the Harmony series, author Philip Gulley writes some of the funniest stories I have read about the idiosyncrasies of the church family. In my own experience I have met some of these folks, I'm sure of it. That kept me laughing out loud. I highly recommend this entire series, which reminds me somewhat of the Mitford books.

I'm re-reading all of the Harmony series, which I found many years ago at a library in Ohio. Google saved me - and I found them online. The mix of humor, social lessons, current events and religion (never overdone) is a perfect soothing bedtime read combo for me. I do take issue with Gulley's consistent description of the Catholics - he uses DaleHinshaw's voice - but it's usually a swipe or a dig. Especially the "Second Class Citizens" line - about an ecumenical service and Communion. It's my only beef about books that always are heart warming, never sappy and sometimes laugh out loud funny.

Same quirky characters in the series with experiences and outcomes that might surprise you. I enjoy this series because it is so real. Seems like i know folks similar to these people and it makes for a comfortable easy read. Laughs thrown in for good measure and this is the reason i read, for enjoyment.

An honest, thoughtful, humorous look at small town church and community life. A Quaker pastor grovels with his town and congregation and pleasantly but obviously points out the good, the bad and the ugly.

This book changed my life. I read the book exactly one year ago and can't believe the changes in my body. I've always tried to eat healthfully -- whole grains, low fat, dairy -- but as I have aged, I was starting to notice that I couldn't lose weight anymore. I also was forgetting things and was noticing that my skin was very dry. I thought that this was just natural with aging (after all I'm in my 50s). I had run blood tests with the doctors and was always told that I was "normal." I'm 5' 5" and weighed 150 pounds a year ago -- I was becoming overweight and on the verge of having to buy a new wardrobe because my stomach was getting too big. That's when I started Hyman's eating plan. I love bread and really couldn't imagine a life without it; however, I finally decided to brave it for three weeks to see if I would really feel any different (like Hyman claims). On July 8, 2016, I removed all sugar, grains, and dairy (except for pastured butter) and added more veggies, sweet potatoes, pastured beef, fresh organic chicken, pastured eggs, tofu, nuts, and healthy oils. It was tough the first week -- my body felt a bit weird, I got a strange headache on the first night, and figuring out what to eat in a pinch was especially hard. However, I really enjoyed the food. I'm not much of a cook, but even I could figure out how to cut and sauté some squash. Surprisingly, after a few days, my body started to feel satiated -- I wasn't getting the munchies which had always sent me running to snack on cereal or bread. By the second week, I started to have more energy (like a LOT more energy) and suddenly I was thinking more clearly than I had in many years. By three months I noticed my skin was no longer dry and I rarely needed any lotion. By six months I noticed my fingernails were strong and growing very quickly. My hair's texture also changed -- it became thicker, straighter, and stronger. Oh, and I lost 15 pounds in one year without ever feeling hungry or deprived. (Just FYI, I've always exercised a bit, but I did not need to exercise more than normal for this to happen.)I know I probably sound like a hack for Hyman to get you to buy his book, but I'm not. In fact, I do have a few negative comments to make: 1) To be honest, I hate the title of his book -- it feels like some terrible diet plan, and I'm often embarrassed to tell people the name. Trust me, it is not a fad diet. It is a whole education and a new way of life. 2) I found the recipes a bit difficult (as I mentioned, I'm not much of a cook). Also, he uses a lot of exotic ingredients in his recipes and doesn't really think about things seasonally (that's important to me, so I'm trying to incorporate that in my own diet). 3) He is a bit paranoid about the government. I personally agree with a lot of his views, but some people find it off-putting.Since reading Eat Fat, Get Thin, I have listened to hundreds of podcasts about food, diet, health, and functional medicine. I discovered that this diet is very similar to a few other diets such as the Paleo diet or the Ketogenic diet. However, if you are new to this idea of adding more healthy fats in the diet and removing grains and sugar, I highly recommend this book first since Hyman does a great job of compiling and explaining the data in a simple, straight-forward way. While I didn't really find the recipes at the end that useful, I have a friend who cooked all of them and loved them. (Maybe I'll give them another try?)So after one year on this plan, the bad news is that I ultimately did have to buy a new wardrobe anyway -- only in a smaller size!

I was a member of Dr. Hyman's beta test group for this book and my results were miraculous. I was an insulin dependent type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure. I have been off all of my medications and have lost about 50 pounds. I have no more heartburn, no more stiff joints and feel like I am 30 years younger. It is truly an amazing book. Words are not enough to express my gratitude to Dr. Hyman for giving me back a healthy life.

It's true! No counting calories, fat grams or logging into my fitness pal. I'm down 8 pounds by applying principals and I'm HAPPY w/out joint pain! As a former Weight Watcher lifetime member eating unlimited core foods, I've struggled with hunger, cravings and blood sugar swings causing my weight to be impossible to manage, until Eat Fat Get Thin!!! I can actually eat something sweet and not want more.Dr. Hyman has about 500 references in the book and by no means does he "take credit" for a new look on fat and sugar. There are a ton of recommended supplements that I don't take all in one day, however when I do have the potato starch, PGX etc. my blood sugar is under control and I feel better.Make a few recipes like suggested so you're not overwhelmed with "what do I eat", a simple grass fed burger w/a carton of mushrooms, onion, avacado and sweet potato w/butter is an incredible satisfying dinner (no bun). The lamb shepards pie, cream of mushroom soup and chia seed breakfast are incredible recipes. I never thought I'd be able to give up my oatmeal and here I am eating roasted veges for breakfast w/avacado oil, salt, pepper. If I'm stuck and eat say a slice of pizza, it doesn't taste great and give me that "wanting another two slices". There is a ton of information in this book, it's not just "skip to the back and get the diet". I'm truly happy eating this way and in no rush to see where my weight goes and I know the numbers are only going down.
