I bought this after hearing Chip Ingram speak about this book on the radio. It caught my attention and I said "I have to buy this book". Although I am not married I have been dating my boyfriend for just over 2 years. I thought this would be a good book to read before we decide to step up our relationship. We started reading it the day I got it and we aren't done but even the introduction and frist chapter are eye openers.
I know the title of this book is Marriage That Works so you automatically think it's only for married couples, however, if you are a single person who wants to marry and you want your marriage to work well, you need to read this BEFORE you even get engaged. Chip Ingram peels away all of the layers and tells you from personal experience what it takes to have a great marriage; a marriage you look forward to.Chip speaks fairly and squarely to both men and women. There are no taking sides. In the chapter Is There A Woman In The House? he reminds us that men and women have equal standing yet we have different roles then he breaks down how those roles look.Chip takes a strong stand for women. I pumped my fist when he said: "Equality between men and women is a good thing." The reader sees through his pen how valuable women are to the kingdom of God and to Jesus himself. His love for his wife Theresa flows through every sentence and lets you clearly see that after God, she is the reason he is the man he is today. She is at the foundation of every accomplishment. He values her presence in his life in a very special way. There's a beautiful example of how a wife submits to her husband beginning on 109 that you must read.When I read the chapters specifically directed at men, I thought, oh my goodness, God requires a lot of men and I'm not sure many know this in a way they need to know it before saying I do. If you want God's view of how a man shows up in marriage, those chapters are a MUST read for every man.Marriage That Works walks you through biblical models and God's original design for marriage. Chip says, "God doesn't give us mediocre goals to match our human standards, he gives us divine goals to bring us up to his." Amen! Chip not only tells you how this looks, but he also shows you how to build a marriage that pleases God in every way.Thanks, Chip for writing an excellent book filled with godly wisdom and application. "Marriage That Works" by Chip Ingram is a good title for anyone of any married age who really wants to improve their marriage. Around 240 pages, some of the topics addressed include:1. Biblical definition of submission (hint: it's not dictatorship!).2. How mutual submission works in a marriage.3. As the husband and wife get closer to God, they get closer to each other.4. How men can better love their wives.5. What sacrificial love is not.6. How the role of American women has changed over the years.7. Financial, relational, and spiritual objectives for the husband.8. 3 priorities for the wife.Well-written, readable, and full of good spiritual and practical insights, anyone can benefit from this title. I was given a review copy by Baker Books in exchange for a fair review and appreciate the opportunity.
My review of Marraige That Works by Chipingram: First impression was the hardback cover with the slip cover which speaks quality, nicely made and ironically matches the message being told in this book about a long lasting marriage that works. Anything worthwhile takes work and the author Chipingram hits it home in his writing on this subject including the presentation of his book. I like that he includes cited references in the notes section at the back of his book that he is diligent in his research on this subject. There are reflection and discussion sections at the end of the chapters which provide the reader with actual application of what was just written in that particular chapter. Chipingram has an honesty or transparency in his writing about what it will require to have a great marriage including some of his own experiences. He also shares a brief history of his wife's background-being transparent- the realism of a lot of family "semi-functional" origens. In addition, he puts the focus on God's original plan for marriage and how this relates and reveals Christ's love to the world and His commitment to the church. This is an overall good read not only is the book good quality in materialship but also the subject matter well worth glorifying God and saving marriages putting the reader on the right perspective. I had previously enjoyed reading Ingram’s book The Real God, so I was excited to read Marriage That Works. In this book, Ingram talks about the covenant of marriage, and how husbands and wives nurture, protect, and provide for each other. Ingram writes with a tone of humility and sensitivity; there is a kindness behind his words. He explores the importance of marriage while showing how men and women can thrive in their marriages.I received this book for review.
