Ms. Johnstone has a lot of potential as an author. But, this book has some major problems in both continuity and context. First if you are going to write book in a historical setting please use language that is part of the time period. I don't expect an author's romance book to not take dramatic license, but the usage of modern day colloquialism in language kills the book for me. Ms. Johnstone used far too much modern language for me to over look it. Ms. Johnstone pretty much throughout the social mores of the time period, in writing this book. Between these points several stars were deducted. You can't write a historical romance and not abide by the time period you are writing in.Second there were continuity issues in this text, and it makes me wonder why since this book was written in 2012 that the text issues have never been addressed. Does not one pick up when the hero has already told the heroine something, but tells her again near the end of the book.Third there were to many players in the play. The author set up an entire cast of characters for her to build future books on and bloated this book with them. She also had to much death and tragedy that the characters moved on from too quickly. I also felt I was running a race the entire time I read the book, as the author had too many moments fraught with danger. In all it was far too much in one book. Now I have said all this know that I am not giving up on this author, as I see potential in the way she writes her characters. She may have given me too many characters in this book, but she gave me good well developed characters. She also gave me a story that despite being bloated with too much plot had really good bones of a story. No I am not trying to give you mixed singles, I just want you the person who reads this review to know that Johnstone has the chops to write really good books. What she needs and what a lot of Indie authors need is someone to tell them when to cut and when to add. They also need continuity editors, like movies have, because readers don't need or want dialogue repeated. I truly believe the need readers prior to release that are going to be heartlessly honest with them and tell them when something works and doesn't work. Writing a book is a craft and an art form which authors can improve. Now that I have read Ms. Johnstone first work. I am going to move onto her later books to see how she has honed her craft. I hope to ring out the truth in my prediction, that she has the chops to be a solid writer.I also listened to this as an audible companion, and the audio version was very well narrated, it actually enriched the experience.

I loved it! The heroine had some spunk and our hero was sexy and charming. In the beginning we find Lady Gillian Rutherford in the hunt for an American business man named Drake Sutherland. She wishes to charm him into falling for her and offering marriage so that he can take her away to America. Gillian is being blackmailed and the only way she can escape and protect her sister, Lady Whitney, is to marry Drake and leave England behind. She accidentally bumps into his business partner Lord Alex Trevelle, Marquess of Lionhurst.Alex is intrigued by Gillian, tries to seduce her. But she tells him of her plan of making Drake fall in love with her and taking her away. Alex agrees to help Gillian capture Drake's heart, and what follows is some very entertaining moments when you find these two in some heart fluttering situations. Alex tries hard to step aside and give his friend the open path to Gillian, but these two just can't seem to not fall into each others arms again and again. Her aunt is also a hoot and so great at trying to get these two together. In addition, Alex also has a secret that he carries with him that is preventing him from offering for Gillian. We also have a villain, Lord Westenburt, which Gillian's father offers her up to marry. He is a cruel, vicious guy and you just can't help but squirm every time he comes into the scene.I was pleasantly surprised by this book and look forward to others in the series.

It will be difficult for the Duke of Kingsley (aka the Duke of Death) to re-enter society after an 11 year absence. The death of his wife has yet to be resolved and so we can count on the ton to make the worst of what is out there...only the duke and eldest daughter, Gillian, know what happened the night the duchess when over the cliff. Young Whitney does not recall the events of that night.Since returning to London, Gllian has received anonymous notes warning them not to re-enter society or the true story of what happened that night will be made public. And you will ask, who else was there?Father wants his daughters wed before the story becomes exacerbated thus ruining any chance of an advantageous ($$$$) match. Gillian met a fine specimen of a man behind some drapes as she hid from her father and his choice of suitor, the evil Mallorian. Later her friend, Sally, reintroduces her to the man who stole a kiss from her when she was 8 years old, Alex-Lord Lionhurst, who also hides in drapes from anxious, amorous females. She is looking for his busienss partner, Drake. If she weds him, she can have a secure life and have her sister live away from scrutiny and accusations with her in America. The story becomes very exciting as potential suitors try to make their play, the blackmailer makes some bold moves that affects several characters. I really enjoyed this drama, romance, mystery. There are sinister characters. There are humorous characters. I can highly recommend this series as I have read it three times now. I also recommend the Audible narration by Tristan Hunt.
